THE MAIL TAKE ADVA XT AGE of the oftor Tub Mail mnkes for 6oocl Roads. See other side of this page JACKSON COUNTY. I Ashland's imuual city election win take place Tuesday, Do .'ember 20tli. Ashland pays iZXi per month for tor street ligbts.coiiBisting of twenty eight arc lights. Miss Theresa Bryant, of Scuttle, formerly deputy ' county clerk of this couuty, is visiting friends at Ashland. G. O. Van Nuttu, uud Mrs. Idu M. ! Griffith, of ABhlaud, were married at Jacksonville Wednesday last, Hon. Goo. W. Dunn ofiloiutlng. A Los Angeles firm . shipped forty Hve head of line horsos from Ashland last week, which they bud purchased at uiiioront points in the valley. 'si evidently uungry ones, entered the homo of W. V. Peutor in Ashluud Sunday night, while the fnm uy was at ouuroh and curried otf about all the eatablos there wore in the pantry. The Ashland sower assessment-caso was argued and submitted iu tho olr- cuit court ou a writ of review, aud taken under advisement by Judge liauua. It is not expected that a de cision will be rendered until the con vening of the regular term of oourt next Monday. Miss Mary Prioe, of Ashland, alarm ed her friends Snnday by suddenly disappearing. The young lady is afflicted with St. Vitus dance and during such attacks beoomes mental ly irresponsible. She was found after a search of several hours in an ex hausted condition. Daniel Walker, one of the pioneer oitiaens of the upper valley, died at his home near Ashland on Suuday evening, aged 70 years. Mr. Walker located on his farm in 1867, and has .lived there .ever since, a successful farmer aud -Bookraiser. He leaves a wife and four grown children. The Ashland Preserving Co. packed 'G700 oasesaof fruits and vegetables this season, as. against 4400 for 1903. Tho ttotal amount of material used was 200 tons, one-half of whidh, nearly, was tomatoes. The remainder was divined approximately as follows:: Poaches, 85 tons ; Bartlett pears, 14 tuna; oiaoKoernes, U ton.; straw berries, raspberries and loganberries, i ions.; piums and apples, 8 tons; pumpkin and squash, 10 tons:; string uoauo ana peas, a tons; miscellaneous 10 tons. Because. a gaslighting plant whloh was installed at Jacksonville hy J. E. Hunt failed to work satisfactorily, A. E. Reamos, district attorney, lias ob tained judgment in the oiromt court of Multnomah county against ihim for $9296. The plant was installed in 19CJ and was guaranteed to fiumSsh ir,n lights of 100-oandle power. It is al leged that it failed to do this, .and the mains ware improperly laid and the materials used were defective. Tho case was set for trial -before Judgo uoorgo, uvomoor 'Jlst, but the de fendant fuilcd to appear to. niuke'auy 'Contest. An Ashland man, D. T. Irwin, hns been quite successful recently, it is .reported, hi locating gold bearing quartz lcdgus with a "divining re.d. " He bus boon working in tho Wagner croek district tho past week and hno .located two ledges upon which pros peotmg work .will bo.bogun. He has recently located some valuable leads on the Klamath river. The "diviu ing rod" for locating minerals is operated ou the same principle as the liazel switch in hunting favorable con ditions in digging for water. Of course no matter of fact person has any faith in such appliances bui prospectors are quite taken tip with xne "divining rod" for locating min eralized quartz veins, "just as an ex periment, you know:" A tremendous current of ' wind picked up about 600 feet of water flume near the Ashland Manufactur. ing Co. 's mill, near Ayers Spur.Satur day evening, shook it, as a doe siU shako a rat, and thsn scattered its timbers over tho surrounding coun try. me employes at the mill and many people in Ashland noticed heavy black cloud going over the valley from the southwest to the northeast about dnsk, and it was the wind accompanying this cloud which did the mischief at Ayers Spur. The Hume Is brought to the mill from Neil creek over a ravine nnd for quite a distance is suspended on a trestle which is from 20 to 30 feot from the ground. The wind circled or eddied around and underneath this aerial structure finding It just the thing to play with. The loss of material will uot be total. Tidings. J!W1 70L- ivi. Tho management of theVictor placer property, near (llendiile, has nut everything In readiness for winter work with n hydraulic ph,nt. The Victor was once equipped with a grout steam pumping nlant. v.hieh uu utilized for furnishing water under strong head for washing the gravel. but did not prove profitable iu that manner. Since then a ditch svstoin uas gutiiored available water supplies. and nn ordinary hydraul'o plant is operate:! with muoh better results. Tho 40-ton oynuido plant, Sturde vunt rolls, rock crusher, engine, boil er and othor machinery which woie received some time ago for tho Oro Pino, near Giants Puss, have been hauled out and sot up at tho protiertv. ou Jump-off-Joe. The Oro Fino is the property of Portland people, S. Chase being superintendent, and J. H. Fisk aud othois own uu interest. J. no property is looutod just ovor tho divido from the Granite Hill, uud is recognized as one of the most im portant mines of the distriot. At the Monumeutal mine work will soon begin on the construction of a quartz rnill and tho building of a long ore onute to carry the ore from tho main adit tunnel to the oro bins. Tho company has been operating its own sawmill, cutting the vast amount ot lumber necessary to erect the several buildings and the long flume which is to bring water from Shelly creek and supply power for the plant, Tho Monumental will be eauloDed with a Datwry of the roller ferno. as th, ore Is soft and friable enough to be easily worked by a rotary machine. David Briggs and boys, who were made rich iu a day by Mie fabulous surface wealth of the Wounded Buck claim, on upper Suokor creek, ham located a olsim up iu the mountains or tho Gurry county line, and will work the rich ledge they have found there. Thoy have had samples from this oloim recently assayed here. and. while they do not give tho returns that the Wounded Buok ciuarte has ivon, tho proposition appears Tery promising, ana the lucky family will move their soene of operations "from the Upper Sucker o the Chetco. The Wounded Buck is under bond to i company for a consideration of ?100. 000. PUBLIC DOMAIN Lake county hns a gold exeitoment that as productive of good develop ment work. Five or six poisons havo been proseouting work, and the past week, .Curtis Alexander, a mining en gineer, has been making careful ex aminations of the surface and prospect holes. He devoted most of Ons time I to the one property, but has also vis-1 supervisors, C. Bnrtrnm, ot the southern division of the Cascade for uv reserve, wag in Jackson county iuibwook upon official business. mr. liaitrum is very much elated with tho record of bis division during ' season just concluded. The sea sun was an extremely dry one the uryost known for many yours, and tho loss of timber by (Ires in t ie stutc amounted to 88,000,000. vet in tho southern division of the Cascado re servo, tuo dumugo amounted to hut sai.ou. Iho result is duo, Mr. Bart rum says, to tlneo causes. One might to no good luck : tho tno activity and vigilance of the rang ers and the third to the hoarty co i-i-.biuu ui me BtocKmeil cruzinc. witniu tno reserve with tho ! euorts of the rungois to keep down fires. Thoro are upward of 100 men taking caro of stock inside tho reserve and it will readily be seen that this maKos a strong supplementary force iu tne government rangers if they co-operate, whloh they have done auuugtDe past season. On several occasions stockmen have extinguished fires themselves. Iu granting permit iu graze stock- on the reserve this 1b one of the conditions most forcibly impressed upon the Btookmo that is to ma luterest to see tha foraat protected. A violation of this noadl. on or of any of the other ooaditloas imposed will result in tho mnutin. of his permit for all time. Tho atook meu have all willingly oompllad with this condition and to that faot mv hm attributed much of the credit for the few flres in tho southern division. During tho season when tha lUmm of flres is not great Mr. Bartrnn his forco engaged In markta cha boundaries of the resorve. Many claims are owned inside the Unas h. tnM. . viduals and tho lines around that are aiso Doing plainly marked. About the flnst of March he axpecta to put lurco ot men at work marking tha western oounaary through Jackann county. This winter the Oregon delamf.lnn will ask congress to aranfc nkh.. to the rangers to arrest violtnr. f mo provisions governing tho reserve witnouc well desorvod support. it is not ponuittod to mention tho particular woumn who stirred up Gold Hill, but thnt she did it efleetuullv was proved by tho handsome chock which found Its way to the statin fund.
