OREGON, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21,

Tho Middle Blatos manufacturers
who have enjoyed cheap koh fuel
for many years are face to fuco
with exhaustion of the gai supply.
Manufactories are beginning to
movo. It is cheaper to go to coal
than to carry coal to them.
An interesting case comes from a
New Jersey Federal court. Goods
imported from Germany were left
in tbo custom house, the importer
rofusing to pay the duty. They
were sold for 12190 less than the
duty, and now a judge decides that
tbo importer is responsible to the
government for the deficit.
A dispatch from benighted Rus
sia says that the commander of a
Cossack station is so anxious to
have his district show a preponder
ance of male ohildrrn that he has
decreed that the father of every
new girl baby shall receive fifty
strokes with a knout. This, how
ever, shows great progross,' as not
long ago it would have been the
mother who would have received
the punishment.
The best paid mail-carrior in the
world is Oocar FiBh, who recoive9
135,000 a year for making two trips
4 month between Valdz and Eagle,
Alaska, a distance of a little over
four hundred miles. This service
is performed with a fine team of
Eskimo dogs, and although Mr.
fish has gone over precipices, en
countered avalanches, been frost
bitten, frozen and starved, be has
always managed to reach bis desti
nation.
Southern Illinois has more than
2,000,000 apple trees in an area of
over 40,000 acres, which are not in
full bearing. The crop is estimated
us more than 1,000,000 barrels for
this year, which means that if they
were all of first grade it would take
6GO0 cars, or 220 train loads, to
move it. A large percentage of the
fruit, however, will be evaporated,
made into applebutter and other
wise preserved, and only the finest
apples will be sold in the natural
state.
Official statistics show a decline
this year in the number of persons
hurt by railroad accidents, as com
pared with the corresponding
months of JaBt year, but the num
ber is altogether too large. In three
months HO personB were killed by
acoidents and 1810 were injured.
In the same time 616 persons were
killed and 9520 injured by railroad
accidents of all kinds. Many of
tho "accidents" were not the fault
of the railroads but of persons who
inexcusably walked on the tracks
and did other thing of that nature.
It is said that Mrs. Katherine
Tingley, head of the Point Loma
Theosophical colony at San Diego,
Calif., came into unpleasant promi
nence through the government's
investigation of the importation of
Cuban children for the institution.
In this investigation it devdloped
that Mrs. Tingley believed that a
spaniel dog she h'js contains the
soul of her predecessor, William Q.
Judge. It was also alleged that
she had fooled rioh bankers and
other rich men; that she was in the
habit of taking parties of young
girls to New York and introducing
them to gay company, and that
she did not believe the marriage
oeremony a necessity. Her impor
tation of children will not be per
mitted. ...

From the Atchison, Kan., Dally Globe.
This is tbe season when the woman
who knows the bust remedies for croup
Is In demand in every neighborhood.
One of tbe most terrible things in the
world is to be awakened in the middle
of the night by a wboop from one of the
children. The croup remedies are al
most as sure to be lost, In case of oroup.
as a revolver 1b sure to be lost in case ol
burglars. There oscd to be an old
fashioned remedy for croup, known as
hive syrup and tolu. but gome modern
mothers say that Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy is better, and does not cost so
mueb. It causes the patient to "throw
np the phlegm" quicker, and gives re
lief in a shorter time. Give this remedy
as soon as the orouDV couzb appears.
and it will prevent the attack. It never
rails and is pleasant and sale to tune.

Cattle In Lake County.
From (be LakeWew Kxamlner.
The Daly-Miller-Heryford Com-,
pany of Warner Valley sold 235
bead of beef cattle last Saturday to
Louis Gerber, of Lorella. Mr. Gerber
also purchased fifty head of beef
from Jack Barry and others at AdeL
He also received this week sixty
ibead of beef cattle from Chewaucan,
purchased for bim by Dell Brattain
from John Farra, George Jones and
Brattain Brothers. All this stock
will be taken to Merrill to be fed
on alfalfa for ihe winter California

Louis Gerber informs The Ex
aminer that the Daly-Miller-Heryford
cattle company's ranch in
Warner valley will, in a few years,
be one of the greatest cattle plants
in Oregon.
O. R. Martin, Joe Howard, J. D.
Carr, L: Gerber, Mitchell Bros, and
J. J. Straw have purchased over
4000 tons of alfalfa in the Lost
River country. Lost river is be
coming one of the beet places on
the coast as feeding grounds for
both beef cattle and mutton sheep.
A Startling Surprise.
Very few could believe :n looking at
A. T. Hoadley, a healthy, robust black
smith, of Tildes, Ind., that for ten years
he suffered such tortures from rheu
matism as few could endure and live.
But a wonderful change followed his
taking Electric Bitteis. "Two bottles
wholly cured me," be writes, "and I
have not felt a twinge in over a year."
They regulate the kidneys, purify the
blood and cure rheumatism, neuralgia,
nervousness, improve digestion and
give perfect health. Try them. Only

comes from there that he is on trial
charged with malfeasance in office.
The case is causing a great sensa

will cause much speculation there
