" Thk story that the Duke Boris, Brother of the Ctar, filled a Chicago ictus girl's slipper with wine and t&en drank the beverage therefrom 2sb a little improBable. A combination of an Amer ican plow with the Missoari mules tiaat survived the war, will soon atetore the Transvaal to its former prosperity. Thk "bee cure" is the latest dis rery in the way of cures for cer tun disease?, such as rhcumatiem. There is one thing certain, a bee ating is pretty sure to cause one to 3bee interest in another pain he might have temporarily at least. Pbof. Robert Fitzsimmons will aaon take charge of tbe "physical anUure" chair of an eastern school, aad will instruct the students there sf in latest and most up-to date atyle of spoiling the other fellow's ftcial beauty and disarranging the jositiou of his short ribs. Oregon should do something lanchome in the wy of a testimo nial to Admiral Cltrk. He is en titled to it. He is about the only fficer who participated in the bat tle of Santiago, who has not mixed wp more or lees in the controversies asace. Like a true American sailor ft did his duty when the occasion arose, and left it to tbe other fellows to quarrel about it afterward. J. Pxerpont Morgan says that President Roosevelt must not be re flected, and proposes to run Grover Cleveland against him. As Grover when he waa- president displayed tgiiU a predilection for having his ttcrn way, J. Pterpont might find Ksnaelf not bettered by a change 5t alone what tbe people wou'd &ink about the matter. Tbe mem ory of several years cf Democratic ministration in the early '90s has aat yet been eradicated. It is now said that Morgan's alleged decision to defeat the President for re-nomi sation if possible had its origin vhen.Mr. Ro sevelt was Governor of New York State. At that time a Bill taxing franchises was passed by the Legislature at the Governor's argent suggestion. Of course, the corporations were all against it, and Mr. Morgan made a personal ap pea to Roosevelt on the subject. It ws the great financier first per sonal effort to influence - legislation, nd he was emphatically turned A HARD PILL TO SWALLOW The prices eome druggists charge for prescriptions and drugs generally are really exliorbitant. You might say that I our bills, but careful comparison will oonvince you to tbe contrary. Rcmem fcer that wo carry only high grade gooJa we bunk on quality. STRANd'S BRUO STORB, Medford, Oregon down, the Governor paying no more attention to his request than if it had beeu preferred by a broker. I be bill Went through and is now on the statute-books, and hiB defeat has ranklod iu Mr. Morgan's mind ever since. A strange bit of money reached tho hands of a oonduolor on the Atlantic Coast Line Railway the other day. It was a prosperous looking five-dollar bill, a little the worse for wear, and aoross its face was written: "Last of a $50,000 Inheritance. Wine women and cards oaused it all." How easy it is Tor a man to dump his failures onto other shoulders, to mistake moral weakness for evident mis fortune. Wine and women of the kind that are generally associated with reckless drinking and riotous living and oards, can do very little harm in thiB world alone. There always has to be a fool to be plucked ; a plunger, who laoks the sand and courage to do right; an in dividual who pays a high price for sorry pleasure. The text on the five-dollar bill doesn't iuepire much sympathy. Tbe man whooan burn up $50,000 in Belf-pratifioation is selfish, ignorant, unfair to himself and to those who are dependent on him, and has wasted not only dollars, but days and nights, and weeks and months, and a chano to be useful and honorable and decent Don't waste a heart throb ou the man who wrote that farewell to his fortune. Ritber should he have written: "Last of a $50,000 inher itance, wasted by one who could not withstand temptation and who lacked the courage to be a man," The October report of the finan cial condition of the county shows the present indebtedness thereof to be $101,692.76, an increjse of .some $5,300 in the past six months. It will be remembered that during the last political campaign the April statement of County Clerk New bury was denounced from the stump and by Democratic newspapers as false and misleading, and it was vociferously denied that any such reduction in the county debt had been made and tbat tbe net debt was considerably more than $96,359 as shown in tbat statement Also it was predicted that tbe county clerk would find the debt $120,000 when he came to make bis October report; but this statement of County Clerk Orth seems to confirm that of Mr. Newbury and instead of an inorease of $24,000, we have one of $5,300, and $4,000 of this is ac counted for in tbe warrants drawn for payment of work on the Bear creek bridge at Medford. It is a gratifying showing, and the April report should show a substantial decrease. WANTED At once, at the Ray Works near Tolo, Oregon, six first class car penters. Wages $3 to $3.50. While oleoted to the 46tb Congress, Mr. Whiteaker did not repair to the scone of his duties in time to join in tho organization of tho House. In March tho Democrats dls oovered that to effect their onds ono more vote was needful and that vote must be ready on tbe 18th ol March Mr. Wblteaker bad already sailed (rom Portland en the steamer Elder for San Francisco. When the Elder cast anchor ot! Folsom street at 0 o'clock on the morning of the 12th of March, 1870, the agent of the Central Pacific came out In a wh'.'.jball boat and informed Mr. Wblteaker that the National com it toe had a special train in waitiog at Oak- lind Mela. He left the ship with his hand baggage and was rowed ashore. Tbe ferry-boat had been kept in readi ness and thirty minutes later Congress man Wblteaker waa speeding eastward ia an attempt to overtake the overland train which had twenty-five hours start- After the fastest trip aoross the conti nent on record at that time he reaebed the Capitol on the morning of tbe 18th of March in ttme to cast tbe decisive vote tor speaker. Tbe cost of this train was over 1500 and tbe New York Time of March 24 contained a long and sar castic article on the expedient of tho Democratic party. Governor Whiteaker was alwavs a supporter of home Industry, and many of bis official papers advocate very warmly the Introduction of a system of manufactories for tbe working up of Oregon products. . .
