The wonderful and unusual sight of
a daylight meteor was witnessed at
Santa Hnrbnrn Snturday.' It was wit

Secretary of the Treasury Shaw
has made arrangements to release
about HOOO.OOO of the treasury
holdings. Ho has had a list pre
pared of those ' national banks
throughout the country which held
freo or pledged bonds at the date
of their last report and has made
inquiries for others. After making
allowance for changed conditions
since last report he expects this
will release at least $4,000,000.
Hi hag sent notice to all such
banks that if tbey will send these
bonds to the treasurer of the
United States in sums of fifty
thousand dollars or more, they will
he designated as temporary depos
itories, and tbe face value of the
bonds will be deposited with them
to the credit of the treasurer of the
United States. He has pursued
this course in preference to desig
nating depositories in the ordi
nary way, which compels them lo
buy bonds in the market at a large
premium, thus paying out more
for tbe bonds than they get from the
government. The customs receipts
are extremely heavy at . this par
ticular season of the year, and tbe
cash balance of tho treasury has
gradually increased. .
He also bis decided to antici
pate tbe October interest, amount
ing to about $4,200,000, and with
this in view, order have been is
sued to the various sub-treasuries
to cash such coupons as may be pre
sented them for payment, and the
treasurer of the United States has
been instructed lo mail checks for
interest on the registered bonds.
All this was decided upon eome
days ago, and telegrams prepared
for todav.
The secretary sees in present
conditions no occasion for alarm.
He calls attention to tbe fact that
there is no evidence of a currency
famine present or prospective else
where thin in New York, and even
there the rale is not high for com
mercial paper, and for commercial
pap?r he has the greater solicitude.

Klamath Falls, was granted a din
charge from bmkriiptcy by Judge
Bellinger last week. The decision:
was rendered in passing upon a
motion for a reheating Vhe
Miner went into bankruptcy his
wife filed a claim for $2000 as
signed to her by her father, Judga
G. W. Smith, of Klamath County.
Proof was made against the eetata,
but the creditors objected, and the
claim was disallowed by the referee
in bankruptcy. She appealed, an4 '

court. Miner next made an appli
cation for his discharge, in bank
ruptcy, and tbe creditors again ob
jected, nd alleged, among other
things, that Miner bad cotnmiUe
perjury about twenty ft U' times,
and aeserting that his attitude im '
favor of the payment of tbe claioa
held by bis wife, and also a claioa
held by his brother in law, H. K.
Smith, for $500, was a conspiracy
to defraud the creditors. Judce
Bellinger decided in favor of Mitres,
and after a rehearing has agaiai
found in his favor, which completely
exonerates Mr. Miner of Jtll of the
charges made against him.
