Or der of Knockers" Is one of the oldest known organisations. Its origin is lost in the mists ot antiquity. Its first grand raster probably being the traditional serpent, who, jealous of the happiness and prosperity ot Adam, and Eve, sot ot hla "hammer" and persuaded them that they were being imposed upon. Qualifications necessary for admission ' to the order are various, that most re julred, however, being a noted dlsin- .cHnatton to witness progress or pros perity on the part of either individuals ar the community at large. Whonever may new scheme looking to advance- -stent commercial, industrial or social is landed, it is the duty of every loyal member to get out his "hammer" the ' symbol of the order and to exert all 'lis power and influence against the measure, until it is either killed, or triumphs in spite ot all efforts to down it. If In addition to the above qualifica tions the member proves that he is op posed to any kind of personal exertion, except that necessary to carry out the principles of the order, he is immediate ly advanced to the highest decree. Medford has a strong lodge of the order and most of its members belong to the highest branch thereof. The local lodge - has a record second to none. Various enterprises, which would have been ot benefit to the town and the community at large have been slaughtered in their fnfanoy, others have triumphed in pite of them. But they are never dlr- conraged. From the grading of a oross walk, to the building of a navy, there is nothing so small as to escape their attention, nor so large that they heai late to taokle it, and when they depart this life. His Satanic Majesty has to put them in a special compartment to keep ttem from interrupting the pro .frees 01 toe internal regions, r ortun ately, for the good of the towB, the '"Knockers" are few in number, but the activity they display in discouraging any new enterprise makes them strong. , Sow, there is probably very few of ear citizens wno will aamlt tbat tbey 'are members of the order, but just vaton yourseit awniie, ana see if you don't find that you are speaking slight ingly of some publio or private enter prise that's the "hailing sign" don't aw mm uiviv viwu uoaa jvu txu uoi The Portland Weekly bis patch, Democratic paper, published by A.
