Central America with twenty-five and South America with thirty-eight. Many of these are upon islands. The case of eatangled marriage relationship in Kansas hardly equals the oase in Oregon, where the man m rried the mother of his father's wife and became the fathjr of his own father, and the grandfather of his father's ohildren. Suicides of young women are the order o( the day in southern China, where in consequence of the famine many girls have been sold into slavery. To escape this many are committing suicide. Over six hun dred have done so. Recently eight young girls tied themselves to gether, walked into a river and were drowned. A New York judge has placed a rational interpretation upon the marriage laws by refusing to grant a New York citizen a divorce from his wife because she is extravagant and even committed forgery to 'get money. The judge says when a man takes a wife for better or for worse it is a pretty hard matter to annul the contract. Few people realize that Alaska sends to the United States products valued at 115,000,000 per annum. They consist of gold to the amount of $8,000,000. fish to the amount of 10,000,000, and furs to the amount of $ 1,000,000. The total valne of products brought from Alaska to the United States since its purchase, according to tbe Bureau of Statistics, will exceed 150,000,000. ' Certain Cure for Dysentery and Diarrhoea. "Some years ago I wa one of a party that Intended making a long bicycle trip," says F. L. Taylor, of Now Albany, Bradford County, Pa. "I waa taken suddenly witb diarrhoea, and waa about to eive up the trip, when Editor Ward, of the Laceyville Messenger, suggested that I take a dose of Chamberlain's Col io, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. 1 purchased a bottle and took two doses, one before starting and one on the route. 1 made the trip successfully and never felt any ill effect. Again last summer I was almost completely run down with an attack of dysentery. I bought a bottle, of. this same remedy aud this time ooe dose cured Jme." Sold by Chas. No one could remember, although Just why a wnlter should not be seen with glnse8 as well as any other man wns uot apparent. "It's Just like the wearing of beards," went on the Inquisitor. "The proprie tors of our Important hotels, restau rants nnd cafes will uot permit cither beards or glasses to be worn by their waiters. It Is possible that in some old fashioned family or commercial hotel tho servitors may be found with their noses straddled by optical helps, but you won't find 'cm along Broad way. "Now, this Is a fact worthy of note becauso In every other calling In life the nnmber of persons wearing glusses Is on the increase, nnd even in our schools a considerable percentage of very small children will be found wearing glasses, nnd while', as 1 say, hotel, restaurant and cafe proprietors nre opposed to the glasses, still I hnve seldom found a waiter whose eyes in dicated that he was In the slightest need of them. "You may nrgtte that restaurant wnlters arc generally young men. Grant you that instantly, but all the same thousands of men of similar nge have to wear them in almost every other occupation. "The majority of those servitors commence lu boyhood, nnd the demand of their. vocation causes no Btrnin on the eyesight Consequently thnt may account In a measure for the absence of any necessity for the use of specs. Moreover, the steam from hot viands would render thorn useless probably," NeW York Telegram. , Not Doomed for Ltfe. . 1 "I wits treated for three years by good doctors," writes W.' A . The approaching expiration of the time limit for the completion of the Atlantic shipping combine is arousing the British presB to all sorts of speculation regarding J. Pierpont Morgan's ultimate plans. The promised statement of the pre mier, A. J. Balfour, on the reassem bling of parliament is awaited with intense interest. The statement has been printed that the government plans are complete and that the au thorities are ready to make the effect ive counter move against the Ameri can syndicate. Inquiries in the best Informed quarters indicate t.iat Oils announcement Is not true. Thore is no doubt that Mr. Balfour's announcement will Include a scheme for a direct, last service, in which the Canadian Pacific railroad probably will participate, but not, as originally plan ned, as sole promoter and beneficiary. The indications point more and more to the drawing together of the Atlantic lines outside of the Morgan combine. t- A Farsou's Noble Act. "I want all the world to know," writes Kev. U. J.
