Jaoksonvillo's oolebration of the anniversary of America's independ ence was a grand sunceHB, The celebration opened with n sunrise salute. Despite the rain of ihe pre ceding days the day of the Fourth was almost an ideal one. A large orowd thronged the streets, every town in the valley being well repre sented. The parade formed at 11 a. in. and aftor traversing the prin cipal streets gaily decora tod with flags, bunting and .evergreens, pro ceeded to the court house grounds, where the exercises were held. The procession headed by Sheriff Orme, as grand marshall, marched In the following order: Grants Pass band in their natty suits of white duck: carriage with orator, obaplain end reader; flag float with Edyth Cran flll, of Medford, as a personation of our national colors; a gorgeous float of red and gold bearing the GoddeBB of Liberty, Miss Sarah Maury, re splendent in robe of red; following this was a float nf artistic creation in white, with the Angel of Peace, Miss Jennie Woodford, of Medford, beautifully symbolio of white winged peaoe, with four charming little cher ubs, Vera Merriman, Mary Trow bridge, Ruth Woodford and Luoile Johnson, of Medford, as attendants; next came the float, Justice, beau tifully bedecked in white and til ver, with Mibs Grace Reeves as the central figure and two ravishing little cupius with poiBed arrows in the foreground; our Union repre sented by forty-five little girls; the original colonies by thirteen young ladies on horseback, preceded by Miss Anna Kcegan as flag bearer: America's oolors, the red, white and blue, represented by floats in the three colors, with silver and gold trimmings, oarrying Mary Colvig, Mervena Kenney and Gertrude Dunnington; following this was the fairy float of pure white and silver, with Mary DeBar as queen, attend ed by her court in the persons of Laura Neither, Frances Hubert, Maude Newbury, Pearl Dox, Fleta Ulrioh and Katie Murphy; Battle ship Oregon manned by Ephriam Wilson, Vivian Beach, Bryaut De Bar and Charlie Prim; next came Medford members of Knights of Pythias in their striking uniforms and plumed helmets walking six abreast ; float representing Oregon, laden with products of our fair state in charge 01 Misses Clara Elmer, Ag nes Love, Maud Roborte, Florence DeBar, Hihel Florey, Myrtle Sut ton, Amy Cautrall and Ethel Bar ber in Greoian costumes; Jackson ville's base hall nine in suits of blue and gold afoot preceded by Vance Colvig leading the team's maBCot, a goat, wearing the blue and gold; the proverbial Old Woman in the Shoe with her innumerable chil dren came next; our island posses sions followed ably represented by Franoes Kenney, Lulu Arasmith and Mike Broad in u float resplend ent in various oolors; tandem team of three horses gully decorated in red, white and blue driven by Miss Emma Ulrioh came next, followed by the fire department and engine with hoBe oart beautifully decorated carrying little Ora Norris and drawu by nine little boys uniformed in red. The Qehmoi olub seated in a much bedeoked vthtcle was one of the features of the parade. At the court house the exercises were pre sided over by J. C, Whipp. Rev. S. H, Jones invoked the divine blessing nnd Gore broiher-j' quartet sang several patriotio selections with such efloct as to win for them hearty applause from the Riidiennn. Leila Prim read the Declaration of Independence as it has nevor been read before, While the address of the day by Hon., vft 7.. Vawter, of Med ford, was listened tp with marked attention. The speaker, was fre quently Interrupted with rounds of applause During the fore part of the afternoon the Ciilithumpians with C. L. Reaines as grand orator, furnished amusement for the crovd. GainoB for the enjoyment of all with prizes for tho feats performed claimed the attention of many Hundreds attended the ball game betwonn Medford and Jacksonville, which was won by the former. The Grants Pans band discoursed musio in tho principal places dur ing the day. In the evening the orowd gathered at Ncuber & Tay lor's grounds to witness one of the best display of fireworks ever seen in Jacksonville. The celebration closed with a grand ball in the evening at Orth's hall. The Ash land orobestra furnished the music. Taken as a whole the celebration was one Jacksonville may be proud of and fully sustained the county seat's old lime reputation. Mr. vowter's oration was a model, both as to brevity, for he d d not talk for the long period that so many Fourth of July speakers do, and the timeliness of the topios dis cussed, for he did not follow the linos of the average stereotyped oelebration oration, but talked of today. Clearly and convincingly Mr. Vawter proved that the pessi mist's wail, that public virtue and patriotism were on the decline, was an unwarrantable fw, born of a morbid mind. A me. 7m political life wus growing purer with each year. Conventions were more lair in their deliberations, elections more honestly carried on, and pub lio officials more true to the fealty they owe to the people than at any previous time in the history of the republic And as to patriotism the events of recent years have shown that the American people are just as patriotio as they were in the days when Paul Revere made his famous ride. He attributed to the American sense of justice and lib erty, the cause for the United States attaining the high position it now holds in the world's affairs. The way in which Cuba has been be friended, nnd the magnanimous treatment accorded to China in that country's late trouble, are without parallel in the history of nations. The marvelous growth of the nation in industrial, commercial and other lines was but another compliment to American brains and energy. Mr. Vawter closed his speech with a masterly defense for the Nation's expansion from the time of Jeffer son down to today. A Kunaway Car. About 4 o'clock Thursday morning as a freight train was pulling out some flat cars loaded with granite from the spur at the Ayera quarry, on the Siski you, north of Ashland, one of the cars got away and dashed off dewn the mountain so quick, that the train mer didn't realize it was gone until it was out of sight. It reached Ashland in about Uve minutes, patting through that town at the speid of seventy-live miles an hour. The enrves this side of Ashland slowed it down some, but it made the 12 miles to Medford in lass than eleven minutes, making the last six miles, whloh-is straight track in four minutes, and when it passed Med ford it was going at the rate of 00 miles an bour. Night Operator R. G. Oi-ms-by received notice from Ashland that a runaway car was coming just before the northbound passenger train got in. Being unable to get the passenger onto the siding, at the instant it arrived he notified the trainmen when a brakoman made a. run for the switch and threw it open just in time to let the runaway go onto the siding which it did through rare good luck and' solid condition o( the switch rails, for' which Section Foreman Kelley should hare theoredlt. For once-there waa not i car standing on the siding and the run away was in au instant back on the main track and continned its mad flight until it pasted Tolo, when a level track brought it to a stop and the passenge r train coming up to it pushed it onto the siding at Gold Hill. So many trains are on the road that it is rarely that so long a stretch of track is clear and It waa but one chance iu a hundred that a runaway car could make the 22 miles without making a terrific wreck. Had the train man been a moment late in throwing the switch the Medford yard would have been the scene of one of the most horrible wrecks ever on this road, for the heavy blocks of granite would have gone through the Pullman coach es like shot fro n a rifled cannon.
