A snow Htorm visited Norlbfrn N w York on May 28tli and the mercury full to 80 degrees at Can itnduiguft. Hume damage to fruit wan repotted at Goncva, L'tiea and oilier points. Dairy and Produce Review pub liahed at San Francisco, in its issue , of June 6 said: "Over 10,000 pounda of Oregon cheese wan placed on the market during tbe pant week and o!d readily at 14 J cents." A few weeks ago it was anticipa ted that tho Uuited 8ta!e8 would have a great apple crop this year, but the estimates are now mow moderate and at the bout not more than an average crop is expected. There will be a great many more hog raised in Oregon this year than ever before in tbe history of the stale. A great many farmers arc convinced that they havo so'.vtd the problem of the profitable pro duction of boge in Oregon. A lot of steers, bred and fed in Texas, sold in Chicago for $0 85 per cwt. As tbey averaged 12-55 pjunds in weight, the average price per- bead was 85 08. Tbe extreme top price paid for steers that day was $7 Co per hundred pounds. The proHjiect for the coming ap pie crop is now nv.icb lees promis ing in Missouri, Arkansas and Kan jhb than it was a few weeks ago. l'hero were plenty of blossoms bu! very little fruitreinains on the trees Kurlher ea.ut a large crop is still ex peeled. Farm telephone systems aro mak ing almost as rapid progress as ru ral free delivery of the mails. B.tli will soon become so es.-entiul that farmers will wonder how they ever mnnnged to get along without them'. The luteal city convenience to pene trate the rural districts is -that of ilectrio lights. We noticed a re port recently ttn.t a company in Oregon was running lines into thp country to supply farm houses with ilectrio lights. In the cities tbe - lectric light companies charge -mall users a great deal more for dectric lights than the cost of ob tain'ng the same amount of light from kerosene; but perhaps' they oan make money at a lower rate than they are in the habit of charg ing. If tbey can put down tbe price so as to fairly compete witij kerosene, electric lights would, prove a great convenience, 'espec ally in barn?, where if tbe wiring is properly done, they are much afer than lanterns. Slugs are among the most bother ome pests in the vegetable garden n Oregon and sometimes injure field crops in this state. The fol lowing method for combatting them is credited by an exchange to Mr. Henry Tryon, entomologist, being taken from an article written by lim for the Queensland Agricultural Journal: "Among deterrents tbe use of obflcco waste may be especially rec mtuended. This is composed if the disoarded midrib or stout, leutral rib of the leaf after it baB ieen cured, and at present may be ibtained at the tobacco factories at t mere nominal cost, say five billings per load. Lay the waste n the Soil around tbe portion to be protected. When the slugs come n contaot with it they secrete a hin film of transparent mucus from their strap-like feet, as if to jrotect them from injury, but the obacoo waBte is fatal to them. You nay also make a decoction of to )acoo from tbe waste in this way : ?ill a barrel with the stems, and over with water. Let this stand for twenty-four hours. There will ihen ensue a slight fermentatii d. Drain off the water, and boil it down to the strength required. If you want a very strong solution, fill the barrel with frt-sh stems and fill up wilh the water already used." Ki'H'i Jt In ills NcwHiiauer. The Maii, recently mentioned the fact tbat there had been a po tato famine this epririg iu the mar kets of Medford, notwithstanding tbe fact tbat the Rogue River valley is one of the best potato producing districts on this coast, and the further fact that the p.ice has run from one and a half to two and a half cents per-pound during the past year,.; find the price never touches tbe bedrock price of twenty cents "per bushel, ' which it. some times does in tbe eastern states. And now to our discredit, as a supposedly enterprising agricultural community,' Thk Mail is compelled lo admit that there has been a scarcity of strawberries in the Med ford market for this season, the local crop not nearly supplying thi demaiid. More than half , of the berrie3 sold here, since the Oregon crop supplanted the California ber ries, have come from Creswtll, AI bany, Salem, Portland, and other Willamette valley points. As a consequence of . importing straw berries from a distance of from 200 to 400 miles, the price of this best of all table berries has not been less (ban ten cents a box, lor good qual ity berries, at any of the stores in Medford. ' ' ', , -Tbat there should not be enough s'rawberries raised in this valley to supply even the local demand, is a pre'ty hard setback to our boast ing of having the best fruit growing district on; the-Pacific- coasts : Tbe strawberries that we do" raise here cannot be' excelled for size and for flavor, tbe warm, .sandy soil, to gether with unlimited sunshine, developing and ripeoing them to perfection, while the yield cannot be exceeded by that of the famous Hood River section. But some day there will be strawberries in plenty for the Medford market, and car loads for shipment to other markets, and the dollars now sent away for strawberries will be kept at home and one more leak to the financial prosperity of Jackson County will be stopped. - A Beat Friend. "I surtcrod Irom dyspepsia and Indigestion for tlftecn years," says W. T. Sturdevnnt, of Merry Oats, N. C. "After I had tried many doctors and modlcines to no avail oue of my friends persuaded mo to try Kodol. It give Immediate relief. I can eat almost anything I want now and my digestion Is good. I cheer fully recommend Kodol." Dou't try to oure stomach trouble by dieting, That only further wonkons the system. You need wholesome, strengthening food. Kodol enables you- to as slmilate what you eat by digesting it- without the stomach's aid. Chas. Strang. A Mlaalnaj Polt. "Professor," said an acquaintance, "you understand Latin, do you not?" "Well," replied tbe professor, "I may be said to have a fair knowledge of Latin; yes." "I know everybody says you have. I wish you would tell me what 'vollx' means. Nobody that I have asked seems to have heard tbe word." - "If there Is any such word as 'vollx,' madam, of which I havo st;rlous doubts, I certainly do not kuow what It means." , . "You surprise me, professor. A man of your . attainments ought to know that 'vollx' means vol. Ix." .
