It is the current impression of people down In Webfoot land that Southern . Oregon is ' not a. grass oountry; that it is a land of rocks and a barren waste upon whioh vegetation can make but a scanty growth. Could those mossbaoks see ..the luxuriant growth of grass that tbe . Rogue River valley pro duces they would be oonvinced that there were other grass countries be side Webfoot. There is no section oi Oregon where more varieties aud better grass can be grown than in Southern Oregon. Of the tame grasses that are now grown ' here, tbe blue grass equals, if not excels, that grown in the famous blue grass region of Kentucky. There is a sample of blue grass at the real estate office of Palm' York Co, that is over four feet in height, and It is not a picked sanipl either. ,', The i field . from whioh it was taken would easily yield three tons of hay to the aore, and the grass has had no "moisture other than the rains this spring. That (bare" should be a potato famine in the Medford markets for the past six weeks is a pretty hard showing for the enterprise of tbe fanners of this section, when it is remembered that the Rogne River valley is one of the best potato growing districts of Oregon, Hun dreds of sacks of potatoes have been shipped from Portland and other Willamette valley points- to Med ford this spring and tbe local mer chants will have to continue to de pend upon that souroe of supply until new potatoes- from- California are on the .market. . The . conse quence of this state of affairs IB that potatoes have become an article of luxury to Medford people and the careful housekeeper serves them with the same " frugality" that she does bananas and other high priced foods. It is a proven fact that both the soil and climate of tbls section are perfectly adapted to- tbe grow ing of potatoes of superior quality, and that the potatoes of Jackson County are strictly first cl-iss is a long since proven fact. With a lit tle energy displayed in planting and cultivating and care in build ing cellars and roothouses for stor age purpose by the farmers of tbi8 county there would be no necessity foi the sending of thousands of dol lars away almost every sprin g to other places for so easily produced an article as potatoes. Money spent for products that can be grown at home is so much money gone for which there is not an ade quate return, and the 'community that praolices such financial meth ods places a . handioap- upon its prosperity that no amount of natu ral advantages can overcome.
