Medtord'a Coal Mine.
Professor E. T. Durable, geologist for
the Southern Paolflo Company, has
been in Medford (or the past week,
making an examination of the com
pany's coal development work, now be
ing done on the Furry place, six miles
east of Medford. The position that
Prof. Dumblc holds renders him rather
noncommittal (or an Interview, bat he
stated to a representative of The Hail
that the vein of coal now being de
veloped wa opened up sufficiently to
how the quality of coal it contains.
The tunnel; which has been put in
under .the direction of Mr. J. Owens, is
now in about 500 feet and it shows the
vein to be twelve feet thiok. The Qual

On Monday of this week, June IBtli,
a school meeting was held In this dis
trict. The mooting was called to order
by D. T. Law ton, the retiring ohairmau
of the board. 8, h. Dennett was nom
inated for dlreotor, to servo three years,
and there beiug no other nominations

for Mr. Bennett, as the unanimous
ohotoe of those present. Gail T. Jones
was nominated to succeed himself as
olerk, to serve for one year, and upon
motion the chairman was instructed to
oast a ballot for Mr. Jones, he being
the unanimous choice.

are J. R. Wilson, W. 8. Crowell and S
L. Bennett.
The clerk had previously prepared a

Antelope Calves and a Baby Elk Are
the Recent Acquisitions.
The first oalf born to a tame elk
Southern Oregon can be soen in the
park of J. W. Prall, two miles north of
Medford. This interesting event took
place last week, and so far as Mr,
Prall knows there may be two baby
eiKs, ror ho has not been near enough
to the old elk to asoertalu whether it is
the same little fellow that he soes
dodging through the brush or whether
there are two of them, his ourlosity
betug restrained by the pugnacity of
the bull elk and the unusual shyness of
the cow. Many have doubted whother
elk would breed in captivity, but this
event prove that they will, at least
where they are given some of the free
dom and conditions that they have In
their wild state. The elk In Mr, Prall's
park have all the requirements for their
comfort except unrestrained liberty.
The park consists of 20 acres of wooded
and grass laud along Bear creek and la
an Ideal retreat for elk. The park is
fenoed with six boards and three barbed
wires, so that there is noohauce for the
elk to jump out. Mr. Prall also has i
band of deer In his park, there now be
ing about fifteen head. The deer breed
readily and are increasing lu number
quite fast. To add to the attractions of
his park, Mr. Prall seoured two younir
antelope, when In Lake County recently
witn his sons on a horse buying ejtnidl-
tion. His sons were out hunthinr" one

antelope in which there were two
young ones. The boys, who arc
trained horsemen, gave chaso and after
running the antelope nearly half a dav
ana wearing two horses out they oaught
the two little ones, a buck and a doe.

their camp and they had to carry the
antelope horseback all that distance.
From that camp to Medford, 250 miles,
they hauled the antelope in their wagon
arriving here with them safe and sound
and they are now in the park with the
elk and deer and appear to be as con
tented and well fed as though ran trine
over the bunch grass hills of Eastern
Oregon.
Mr. Prall's park In one of the many
interesting attractions of this section,
and be has shown a commendable pub
lic spirit in spending the money and I
time that he has in establishing bis
park and securing attractions for It.
C. A. Xevatrom, of Evans creek,
came to Medford Wednesday noon with
nis six-year-old son, Harry, who had

been bitten by a rattlesnake that morn
ing. The little fellow was playing and
jumped over a log and onto the snake,
wnicn oit bim In the foot. The bov's
loot and leg were badly swollen when
brougnt to town, but Ur. Shearer soon
had ths poison under control and when
the boy left for his home, Tuesday
morning, the swelling had so far de
creased that there was no danger to be
feared from the poison. Kuttlesnakes
are quite scare hero and this is the first
instance in several years in which a
p.rson has been bitten by any or these
reptiles.
