Five Weeks En Route Still
They Arrive In Good
Shape and Attract Much
Attention.
Commissioner H. E. Dosch has
written to Portland frieuds as fol
lows :
"The grains, grasses and fruits
arrived here some two weeks ago,
all in good condition. Contrary to
expectation, the apples and pears
came through in first-class order,
notwithstanding they were five
weeks en route in a freight car, ex
posed, through that awful cold spell
xma snows conclusively the su
periority of Oregon fruits, provided
they are properly handled and
packed. These were wrapped in
newspaper aud excelsior cn the
sides and between, and not a blem
ish or bruise was on any of them,
The size, color and flavor were a
revelation to most people here. As
we could not expect to keep them
long, I gave some to the newspaper
-fraternity and distributed others
"where they would do the most good.
The Spilzenburgs were especially
fine, Newtowns next, then Northern
' Spies.
"Yesterday was one of the most
delightful days I ever saw, even in
favoiej Oregon. It was 'Colored
day at the exposition, and the
grounds were literally black with
them. There are only 35,000 negroes
. in Charleston. Here it is known
in the south as 'Kiggertown.' .The
other cities say that 'Charleston is
owned by the Germans, run by the
Irish and enjoyed by the 'niggers,'
which is more truth tan poetry.
The attendance is increasing.
Horseraciog every afternoon is
quite an attraction, with a $1000
purse each day.
"A box of apples has just arrived
from S. L. Bennett, of Medford
They had been on the road since
December 9, but were in good order.
The express charges were $9.50.
We counted 51 apples, which makes
them cost 19 cents apiece."
The following notice from the
Evening Post, of Charleston, ex
plains itself:
"The Evening Post has received
from Colonel H. E. Dosch, com
missioner to the exposition from
Oregon, several varieties of fine ap
ples grown in his state. They are
unusually large and of excellent
flavor. The varieties are the Spitz
enburgs, Northern Spy and Yellow
Newtown Pippins, which are the
principal export apples from Ore
gon, as tbey stand ocean transporta
tion well.
"Oregon is famous for its fine ap
ples, and hundreds of thousands of
bushels are shipped ' every year.
The apples that are on exhibition
at the Oregon exhibit at the exposi
tion grounds were shipped by
freight more than five weeks ago.
and tbey are as firm and sweet as
the day they were shipped."

brief but interesting letter in the
Register, written at Medford, Ore
gon, December SO. It will be pe
rused with pleasure by Mr. How-
land's many old neighbors aud
friends in this county. He writes:
Through the columus of the Reg
ister, I will keep my promise to old
friends.
The first question you would ask
Do you like Oregon?" Yes, betttr
than Minnesota. The other day
when we read a letter from back
there, and knew how cold you were
having it, I said to my wife, I am
glad we are not there. We have
been here over one year and the
climate is delightful. There has
only been about twenty-five days
tn that time that we have not seen
the sun some time during the day
Not much rain. When it does rain,
it ' comes generally in the night.
But little fog, always a little breeze
but the wind never blows hard.
Have some frosty nights, but does
not get colder than 20 above and
very seldom hotter than 90 above.
This section is called the Rogue
River Valley. It is about twenty-
five miles long, and from four to-
fifteen miles wide, with several
smaller valleys leading into it.
There are four towns, Ashland,
Jacksonville, Central Point, and
Medford, the latter about the cen
ter, population 2500, eighteen years
old.
All kinds of cereals are raised
here. Wheat on good land yields
from thirty to forty bushels per acre
price 50 cants. Oats sixty to 100
bushels per acre; price always 50
cents. Barley forty to seventy-five
bushels per acre; price 50 cents
Corn.'twenty-nve to forty bush
per acre; always 50 cents. There
is no giain shipped out. Hay is
paying crop. There is wheat ha
wild oat hay, there's volunteer and
alfalfa the latter cutting four to
six tons per acre, brings $8.00 to
$12 00." I am selling now for $10
at' the barn. Fruit of almost every
Kina, appies, pears ana prunes
principally. There is one man
who has 160 acres into apples and

130,000 this year. I know of an

acres, then sold for $2400. He
paid $1500 for it a year ago. Fruit
farms sell well. An "eighty" gold
for $15,000.

in kinds and quality. There are
great tracts of sugar pine in this
country that will run from 5,000,-
OOO to 10,000,000 to the quarter.
This is worth $40 per thousand
here on track. There are moun
tains all around. There are a great
many rich gold mines, the output
being about $250,000 to the five
banks in this valley, besides there
is a great deal the banks do not
handle. There are also copper,
quicksilver, asphaltum and asbes
tos, and coal and oil indications
are good. They are being pros
pected for. There are building
stone and granite quarries. The
stone for the United States nost-
office, at Salem is being taken frcm
this valley.
