Seymour .Bell, the commercial agent of Great Britain in the United States, addressiug the Loudon chamber of com merce and bnsiuess niou ou the subject of American trade competition, said that all America wanted from abroad was daily becoming smaller, but that Great Britaiu was beiug out out of even this small portion of the market by France and Germany. This was tho result of Great Britain's backwardness in nsing labor-saving and automatio machinery. Mr. Bell declared that the workiug classes of Great Britaiu must be edu cated up to them and be convinced that their use was essential before Great Britain could compote with America. Michael Stoska wanted to sail on the Holland line steamship Rhyndam for hit home in Rotterdam, says a New Yorkdispatoh., He started for the com pany U pier in Hobokenou the ferryboat Hamburg, but when in midstream he beheld with dismay the big ship sailing swiftly down the river. Stoska dived into the icy water and swam after the fast-disappearing steamship in an effort to overtake her. In Hoboken they took him to St. Mary's hospital, where the physicians said the plunge might oost the man bis life. i'i have made that boat, he said, "If it hadn't beeu so cold." Irtmta Gathmaaa, tke lvtor, Telia riui Itorr to IlluatraU m tolat4 OellielMa on Awmr. Ueaaorvatiaaa. Louis Gathruann, the Chicago Inven tor, has a fund of funny stories, mostof them dating bnek to the days when h lived In Oertnuny. He, tells one story In particular to Illustrate why It Is that army ordnance officers inrariably die courage new Ideas in gunnery liieteutl of welcoming inventions, as persons in charge of any private enterprise would naturally do. "When I went to Holland aa a boy," said the shrewd old Inventor, "1 had an experience with ordinary army methods I have never forgotten. It seems thsre was a guard posted at a certain corner for some twenty-odd years. The sentry was relieved every tour hours or so without the slightest question during all that time. "Finally some one began to question why a guard waa posted at that par ticular corner at all. A laborious search was instituted among the old army records, aud finally, to the amuse ment of everybody, the reason for that sentry was at last discovered. It seems that a fence was painted on that cor ner, and to keep the people from soiling their clothes some well-disposed othoer stationed a soldier with a gun there. The paint dried on the fence and tht fence fell down, and the corner was built up with another building, but the sentry still paced his beat there for DO years or more. "In this way some of our army tradi tions have been kept up, and officers who are both brave and Intelligent have gone on doing certain things in a cer tain way because a method was initi ated in the department long years Ago for a particular contingency which has sines entirely disappeared." "It's the sweetest little lamb, just the kind that followed Mary to school," Mise Ray said to her dudIIs as. the iamb dashed Jnto the room. The pupils thought so, too, until Miss Ray began to pet the lamb and show it toward tbe door. Then the little animal began raeinr around the schoolroom.
