Pierre Lorillard's estate appears to be worth only about $4,000,000, or much less than was commonly fuppose'd. On the other hand, the estate af the late John I. Blair, of Blairtown, N. J., which appeared in the will to be worth from $20, 000.000 to $30,000,000 is now val ued by the executor at $50,000,000 The annual preliminary report of Collector of Internal Revenue Yer kes for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1001, shows ibat receipts from all sources of internal revenue for the yearjaggregated $306,871,699, an in crease of $11,565,501 over l'JOO. WeBlern states and territories contri buted as follow?: California and Nevada, $4,580,478; Hawaii, $102, 182; Montana, Idubo and Utah $755,673; New Mexico and Ari zoiih, $160,309; Oregon, Washing ton and Alaska, $1,223,013. There is perhips some consola tion to those who think this nation is, going to the bowwows because of the national debt in the official statement of the debt of the United Stttes as compared with that of France. . In France the interest charge on the public debt is $200, 000,000 a year, or over $5 per capita. In the United States the interest charge is only $30,000,000 a year, or about 40 cents per capita. This $30,000,000 looks big, bat this is a big country, and has much greater resources than France with which to pay its debt. The ancient Modoc tribe bap dwindled to 77 members, mostly women and sick or diseased chil dren. The recent death of a Mo doc brave hns left only thirteen able-bodied warrior? , who will never go to war again. From the most savage ' and indomitable of fighters tbey have lost all ambition for anything but tbeir government supplies, and, while virtually pris oners of. war on a small reservation, they are left unwatchod. The spirit of the old days haB gone, and nobody will ever hear of a story about "the last of the Modocs." The Petaluma Courier says that the firm of Miller & Lux own 14, 530,000 acres of land, nearly all of it used for grazing. The vast area held by the firm is not conceivable to one who has not traveled through the state. It is equal to the area of New Hampshire, ' Massachusetts, Rhode Inland and Connecticut' to gether. It is half the size of New York and three times the size of New Jersey. It is about the size of West Virginia and an eighth the entire length of California. It is as arge as Greece, four times the Bize of Alsasoe and Lorranie, and but ttle smaller than . Ireland, and one-third the size of England and Wiucr together. There is only one thing that Henry Milieu, the sur viving member of the firm of Miller & I,ux, beoomes nervous over, and that is discussion of the size of his holdings. ' Joeenh Ladue, the founder of Dawson City, died last week at his horns in New York, of consumption. He was forty-seven years 1 old. NX 31. When be was a young man he went in search of gold, and in the early nineties be went into Alaska on a prospecting tour. 1'or fifteen years be lived in the country without making any strike of consequences. Then he discovered the' Klondike gold n,uldp, which made him rich and attracted ti Alaska a throng of treasure hunters. On June 23, 1896, he ' mapped and founded Dawson City at the mouth of the Klondike, he having been the first man to take up 178 acres of govern ment land at $1.2-5 an acre. This laud he cut up into building lots, KOxlOO feet, which were soon sell ing at $1000 a lot. In 1897, be re turned to the east and on Decem ber 15 of that year married Kiltie Miieon, of Schuyler Falls, with whoa he bad been in love from boyhood. .. : : Mrs E. D. GilleBpie says in her "Book of Remembrance:" My father bad taken some land in Illinois for a bad debt, and this he had never visited. After he had paid taxes on it or several years be was asked to sell the traot." He agreed to it, and named the price, which was the" sum he had paid for it without the taxes. The deeds were scarcely signed when my father found that a city, Peoria, was growing up on the spot. He was naturally disap pointed at what seemed the ill luck of the occurence, but several years after his annoyance was tinged with amusement. A man came into his office and arkedf 'Are you W. J. Duane?'- 'Yes.' 'Did you sell the site of the city of Peoria?' Yes.' 'Did you sell it for $600?' 'Yt.H. The man rose from bis chair. Goodbye be said, 'I only thought I'd like lo look at you.' " Peoria has a population no v of nearly 60, 000. i To Save Her Child - Prom frightful disfigurement Mrs Kaonle Galleger, of La Grance, Ga. applied Buckler, 'a Arnica Salve to great sores on ner tieaa ana lace, ana writes its quick care exceeded all her hopes. The following is from an Iowa paper just received: Incubators will soon be a dead issue," Baid a olerk at the McRae butler aud egg house today. "The hot weather is taking the business all out of the setting hen and the incubator. Last Saturday evening we had proof of it iu the store. One egg, resting peacefully in a case, suddenly broke and the chicken catrfe out just es lively as though he had ben expected for weeks It was a Cute little yellow fellow, and he is as healthy as the average chick born in such hot limes." ''Some strange things have hap pened during the hot weather. Tbe sun has been so hot that our cook didn't have to build a fire to .cook dinner. All Bhe had to do' was to set it out in the suu and the cook ing was soon finished. When a mule started to bray, the bray would melt before it left its mouth and run down its cheeks. You oould see suits of clothes . walking through the streets, not a thing in them, the man had melted out.". Klamath County Items. From tbe Klamath Falls Republican. D. . Morris, superintendent of construction of the Jackson County Improvement Co , was over trom Medford Monday. He was here to buy horses. . The Klamath River Irrigation it Electric Power Company continues as we understand, to perfect their arrangements and will soon be ready to commence work. It is reported that Bare Island in the Big Klamath lake has recently been purohased. The island con tains about 160 acreB and has a valuable hot Bpring on. it. T., July 29. One of the greatest lotteries in history, that conducted by tbe Federal Gov ernment' in disposing ' of 13,000 quarter section claims ' in Kiowa Comanche reservations, was beguci here th:s morning. No event in the years in the southwest bas'altracted so much attention as this 'one tha initiation of a new method of dis posing of government lands. One hundred and sixty-seven 'thousand persons, each with one chance ia 13 of winning a homestead, watched the event here in reality, or at a distance, for the applicants come from every state in the Uriiorj. The drawing took place on a plat form built foi the purpose in the open air a few blocks from tbe cen ter of El Reno. Situated at the foot of several small hills which formed a perfect amphitheater, the ir., , jia, iuiui naa tuo UJTUUBUrc. Ol fcDOU- sands of eyes. People occupied every inch almost of the space around about and every movement of the Government officials on the small space below was watched with the most intense interest. El Reno yesterday cared for fully 15.000 itfople, and the trains that came durint? the nioht nnd tTiia morning swelled this crowdjo fully double that number. Hundreds of others are still bound thjs way. Sunday was spent quietly. ' But as night came on and tbe bour for the actual drawing approached, men and women, many of whom h-d waited patiently fur months, for the morrow's event, or had come thou sands of miles at tbe last moment to participate in it, became anxious. Worn out with daysv of .-hardships and nights of poor accommodations, they were keyed to a bighjjension but withal thousands were cheerful aud hopeful. Tbe first envelope taken from the wheels contained the name of James k. wooa, oi weatneriord, Okla homa, who had registered for a homestead in the Lawton district. Mattie K. Bealn, of Wichita; Kan., whose birthplace 'is in ; Missouri, drew number 2, also in tbe Lawton diotrict. . ; Without doubt Wood and Mien Beal?. who have right to make the first filings, will select the two quar ter sections adjoining the Lawton lownsKe district, ana wnicn are De lieved to be worth $40,000 each.
