Why is beef at its present high
price? says the Breeders' Gazette.
Why do men bid freely for high
types of improved animals of the
beef breeds? Why are the dairy
breeds feeling the awaking? In
1900 we had in this country 10,
000,000 less oattle than in 1892.
In that time the population in
creased over 10,000,000.' In 1892
we had 826 head of oattle for every
1000 of population. In 1900 this
ratio had fallen to 585 oattle for
every iuoo people. During the
eight years intervening between the
years named we lost on an average
over 1,000,000 vof cattle per year.
To maintain even our present ratio
of oattle to population we must
show an increase of about 1,000,000
cattle annually, and when these
figures are added together some

In France the wheat crop this
year will amount to 304,000,000
bushels, slightly less than the crop
of last year. The annual consump
tion in France is about. 340,000,.
000 bushels, so the shortage is
about 30,000,000 bushels, all old
wheat being most entirely disposed
of. The government reports from
Washington estimate crop in the
United States of (100,000,000 bu
shels, whih is more than an average
supply. In .1900 the yield was
522,000,000 bushels. It is expect
ed that the two Dakotaa and Min
nesota will have an " exceptional
large yield, probably '200,000,000
bushels. - Last year it was only
100,000,000. In all parts of the
country the yielj will be. as large

About 250,000 horses and mules
have been purchased by the British
government in the southwestern
part of the United States for use in
the Transvaal during the war with
the'Boers. Traders who have dealt
" --' ""b""" J vuivcio nuu
have been sent to this country for
the purpose declare that the cost
to England per Bpan of mules de
livered in South Africa is more than
500. The British are still in the
market fo good animals. When
it is considered that they have pur
chased a quarter of a million of
mules in this part of the world
alone, the question is asked, "What
has become of them?" The aver
age life of a horse in South Africa
is about ninety days. ; Soon after
the outbreak of hostilities against
the crown a good sturdy,' animal
would live for only a few weeks'
service as the bearer of an English
cavalryman. His life has now
shortened, because the fields are
bare of grasa, and when the caval
ryman gets a new mount he rides
it until it is weakened by starva
tion and then a bullet .ends its
lite, lbe lexas horses ana mules
have given better service than any
secured by the British officers.
Secretary Hay is a very busy
man. Hot weather and cold
weather are all alike to him so far
ts business is concerned. As an
illustration here ure three matters
that came up for his consideration
in one day .tnd these are hot days
and Washington is a hot town: A
communication from Russia offer
ing to abolish the additional duties
on American goods, if this govern
ment would abolish the,, counter
vailing duty on Russian sugar.' He
answeied that the matter was in
the courts and this government
could do nothing until a decision
has been reached. Next, the Chi
nese Minister called, on Secretary
Hay and preeen'ed , a claim for
$500,000 for ill treatment of Chi
nese at Butte, Montana, in 1883,
The claim was pigeonholed. As
China waited fifteen years, before1
filing it, she can wait a while longer
to get an answer to it. " Secretary
Hay's next important caller was
the new Minister from Turkey,. and.
he carried in his inside pocket, a
bank draft for $95,000, in full pay
ment of the claims of : American
missionaries for property destroyed
in Turkey, which have been bunt?
up so long. " ' -;"
