sence of three years and three mouths,
arrived at San Frauoisco, and received

Beuediok WiEenberger, who : shot
Thomas Watson at Susauville, was re
leased from oustody after preliminary
examination, as Justice Hasten decided
that Watson was the aggressor.
Almon Weymouth, a pioneer contrac
tor of Xiivermore, CnL., committed sui
cide at his residence in that city by
hooting himself in the head with a
pistol. Desertion by his wife and
adopted daughter is given as the cause.
He was about 70 years of age and a
native of Maine.
' At Bedlauds, Cal., a young pigeon in
In its flight caused two live wires to be
come crossed, which had the effect of
cutting off the city's water supply for
several hours and inconveniencing many
ranchers who were irrigating in the
valley, besides entailing a monetary loss
to the Edison Electric company. The
bird was instantly killed and half a
dozen wires were burned out, which
cut off the current.
A sensational mining suit was filed in
the United States circuit court at Mos
cow, Ida. It is a battle of the giants.
On one side are pitted Patrick Clark,
the noted miniug man of Spokane, and
group of associates; on the other,
Charles Sweeny, the well-known Spo
kane operator; F. R. Ciilbertson, an
other well-known Spokane mining man,
and two big corporations mining in
Idaho and operating financially in New
York city. Clark and his associates
charge Sweeny -and Culbertson with
swindling them out of two mining
claims in the Coaur d'Alenes, valued at
$1,000,000.
Captain Charles F. Seymour of the
Bitka schooner Iliauina was adrift for
21 days, in which time the schooner
drifted 500 miles to the westward, and
was finally wrecked on the island of
Eagataska, one of the Aleutian group,
where he lived for six weeks with shell
fish as his only food. He was finally
rescued by some natives, who took him
to Atka island, where he was cared for
by Mr. Dirks, who has a station there,
and also by Captain Peterson of the
schooner Challenge, which belongs also
to Dirks. Captain Seymour, with his
dog, was the only one on board the
Teasel.
A blaze at Point Richmond, near San
Francisco, that was visible all around
the bay, destroyed seven places of busi
ness and caused the death of a child
and the serious injury of a man. The
loss, which is between 115,000 and
130,000, is about half covered by insur
ance. A party of miners who were chang
ing shifts at the Baby McKee mine,
near Snmpter, Or., fonnd J. B. Couroy
and Herbert Thomas iu a state of un
consciousness. They died about two
hours after being taken out. It is sup
posed that the men were asphyxiated
by the foul nir caused by the repeated
explosions of powder used in blasting.
Mayor Phelan of San Francisco has
notified Treasurer Brooks not to pay
any demands for salaries of recorder's
copyists who have not been certified
by the civil service commission. Pend
ing a deoisiqu by the-snpremo court all
doubts should be resolved by adminis
trative officers in favor of the civil
-rvice provisions of the charter. -
. Marvin Ford, the young man whose
losses at the race-track forced him to
sriine, was sentenced by Judge Lawlor,
at Son Francisco, to ten years in San
Quentin. Lee Leong, a Chinese mer
chant, had been to the Nevada bank,
and was carrying a sack of coin. At an
opportune moment Ford struck the Chi
nese over the head, and, seizing the
coin, made off with it down Sacramento
Street, but was ultimately captured in a
restaurant. . ',
A Tacoma dispatch says that the
' IJdith Indian tribe, occupying a reser
vation near Ketchikan,, has declared
war against the whites of that section
in consequence of the shooting of Kit
Coon of the Hidahs by Deputy United
fctates Marshal Jones.' Jones went to
the reservation to serve a warrant
charging Coon with cutting timber on
laud outside of the reservation. The
Indian' chief met him with a gun and
'told him to stay away. Deputy Jones
returned to Ketchikan and secured the
services of Jailor Williams. Armed
with rifles, they took up a position
behind a ledge of rocks. The Indian
chief soon came along and refused to
surrender, whereupon Jones and Wil
liams opened fire, two of the shotB hit
ting the chief. Chief Uoon fired once
and then dropped to the ground. He
was soon pioked up and taken home by
Zudiuus, who rushed oat when they
. heard the shooting. They threaten to
shoot all prospectors found in the
woods. -

Henry Labouohere was fined 50 aud
costs iu the king's bench court, London,
for contempt of court iu commoutiug ou
a case which was still in course of trial.
Couusel for the plaintiff wauted Mr.
Labouohere and Horace Voiles, editor
of Truth, to be imprisoned, but Justices
Brewster aud Philmore thought that a
fine aud costs against both defendants
would suffice.
The Paeifio Fire Insurance company
of New York, by reason of heavy losses,
his reinsured with the Westchester
Fire Insurance company of Now York,
so that it is no longer iu business. Tho
Jacksonville losses did not cripple the
Pacific for it had a surplus beyoud all
olaiins but it reduced its margiu above
capital to such an extent that tho direc
tors decided to withdraw from the field.
The Pacific had more than 160,000,000
of insurance iu force, which will be pro
tected under the terms of the reinsur
ance deal.
The Washington house of ex-Senator
Thomas H. Carter of Montana has be
come the hive of a swarm of bees, aud
the industrious insects have already
packed full of honey the entiro space
under the floor of one raom. The store
of honey is believed to be the accumu
lations of three years, and hundreds
of pounds have been taken out recently.
Mrs. Carter has been distributing the
honey freely among the neighbors, who
have begged the ex-scuator's family not
to disturb tho bees.
A flue spectacle was witnessed on the
Horse Guards parade iu Loudon, when
King Edward, accompanied by tho
queen, Princess Vietoriu and other mem
bers of the ' royal family, presented
medals to 3,000 soldier participants iu
the South African campaign. Tho
members of the special Moorish em
bassy, iu picturesque costumes, were
interested spectators.
Emperor William sent a congratula
tory message to the International Young
Men's Christian association during its
session at Boston.
In connection with the celebration of
the 450th anniversary of the foundation
of Glasgow university-the degree of
LL.D. was conferred on Andrew Car
negie, Lord Dafferin, Generals Sir
Archibald Hunter and Ian Hamilton,
Messrs. Cooper and Gay ley of San Fran
cisco and three Glasgow ladies. This
is the first time the university has con
ferred the degree on a woman. Mr.
Carnegie received an ovation.
The National E'.itorial association,
which met nt Buffalo, adopted, after
a warm debate, a- report iu favor of
excluding from the mails all newspapers
that give premiums. Albert Tozier of
Portland, Or., was elected president,
defeating G. A. Willard of Booueville,
N. Y., by a vote of 242 to 162. The
next convention will be held at Hot
Springs, Ark.
Mayor Ashbridge of Philadelphia has
signed the ordinauce granting a whole
sale allotment of street railway fran
chises to Senator Quay and others asso
ciated with him. For these franchises
John Wauauiaker bid (2,500,000, bnt
his letter enclosing the offer was thrown
away unopened by the mayor. Follow
ing the signing of the ordinance the
beneficiaries were offered $10,000,000
an indication of the extent of tho city's
loss through the action of the mayor
aud council.
Harry L. Abbott, a printer employed
on the MeKeesport (Pa.) Daily News
uud a member of the MeKeesport com
mon council, resigned his seat in that
body because he does not believe a man
can be a Christian aud a member of the
council at the same time. "Politics is
the most corrupt thing I have ever been
mixed up with," says Mr. Abbott. "I
am out of it for ever. I have separated
myself and my conscience is satisfied.
Others may not agree with me, but I
know that no Christian can sit iu the
MeKeesport council and save his soul."
Jules Heurivaux, till lately director
