Birds cannot open the foot when

If you will watch a hon walking,
you will notice that it closes its toes
as it raises its foot, and opens them
as it touches the ground.
The enormous growth of the-
orange cultivating industry in Cali
fornia in recent years is demon
strated by the fact that in 1880 81
a total of 15 cars laden with the
fruit were shipped east from River
sido, Calif., while in the season of
1897-08 the shipments amounted to
4,7000 cars.
A new gun now being constructed
by the War Department is expected
to send a projectile weighing 2,380
pounds a distance of twenty-one"!
miles, acd should further improve
ments be made in that line we may
eventually have a gun that we can
put up on the coast and fling a
shell over to Europe whenever we
wish.
The word "gazettee" is from the
name of an old Venetian coin worth
about one-half cent of our money.
The name is applied to newspapers
because it wsb the sum charged for
reading the firBt written journals
that made their appearance in 1550.
After the paper was read it was
banded back to the owner, who
charged the next comer a gazette
for taking a peep at it.
The Engineer Corps of the United
Stntes array will explode 7200
pnundu of dynamite in the Narrows
of New York harbor, shortly. The
dynamite was used as a defense of
the harbor during the Spanish war,
being connected with the shore by
electric wires) After the war closed
it was taken up, and as the govern
meut has failed I) nud a bidder it
is proposed to make one grand dis
play.
West Point authorities have is
sued a manifesto defining the rules
as to hazing, threatening all sorts
of punishment to the cadets who
engage in the pleasant pastime of
ranking life miserable for, and mu
tilating new cadets. Very lisely
that will be the last heard of the
regulations until some notorious
haze reminds the authorities of the
rule.
One of the most prominent Bap
tist preachers in the vicinity of New
York has made it a practice in all
bis pastorates to write his resigna
tion within a week of his entrance
upon a new field, sign, seal and de
liver it to the proper official with
the remark: ''There now! Never
ask me for my resif nation. When
ever you want me to go just break
open the envelope write in a date to
the document and offer it to the
congregation."
A notable feat of engineering is
the driving of the Great Northern
Railway tunnel through two and a
half miles of solid granite in the
Cascade range. Boring was start
ed at both ends toward the center,
and so accurate were the engineers'
calculations that at the meeting
point the difference of alignment
was scarcely one inch. This cut
ting through refaotory material was
accomplished in 45 months by 800
men.
Miss Francis L. Calveard, a sten
ographer in the employ of tho Wt st
ern Union office in Louisville, Ky.,
has suddenly made a patent. She
found in transferring the ribbon of
a typewriter that it was a disagree
able task, leaving the fingers badly
stained which could be removed
only with great difficulty. She
contrived a Hi tie device by which
she could make this ohange. with
out touohi:ig the ribbons. It wns
found to be suoh a success that she

sent it to Washington and had it
patented. : A few days ago Miss
Calveard received a letter from a
concern dealing in such novelties,
offering 10,000 for her rights.
Bartholomew Moriarty, aged 65,
fell irom scaffold and broke hia
neck with consequent local paraly
sis, says the Philadelphia Medical
Journal. He walked six miles to
St. Joseph's hospital, Yonkers, New
York. The X-Ray" made a diagno
sis of fracture of the cervical verte
brae and the broken fragment was
removed by surgical procedure. A
plaster dressing was applied, union'
was perfect and recovery prompt.
Patient was discharged cured in
six weeks after the injury. Quick
work. Next.
George Cooper, who for some years
was organist of St. Stephen's Church,
London, at the city end of Holborn
viaduct, once ventured ' on a pre
diction which is interesting to re
call today. Sir Arthur Sullivan
and Sir John Stainer wera friends
when they were boys of 12 or 14, as
indeed they have' been ever since,
and Stainer was a pupil of Cooper's.
He chanced to meet his friend one
day when he was going for his les
son on the organ and took him with
bim. They were both organ stu
dents, and the teacher put them in
competition with each other, giving
them themes upon which they were
to extemporize. Apparently he
thought highly of; them both. "I
should like to see the race you two
boys will run together," he said
when they had done. "You ought
to do something in the ?;orld."
There are plenty of prophets in ' the
world, but true prophets are some
thing of a rarity and especially
when their predictions take this
double barreled form.

Don't Knock."
An exchange says that a new or
der, the Don't Knock Society, has
recently been organized in Buffalo.
"Knock," in this.sense, is a familiar
elang word that will be in the
dictionaries pretty soon, if it isn't
already. It means, don't spitefully
injure, detract or hinder, others.
The constitution of the Buffalo
lon't Knock Society declares;
We believe that the p actice of
speaking ill of our ftllow-men,
otherwise ''knocking," is detestable,
unbrotherly and uncharitable.
We believe that many lives are
ruined daily, that many hearts are
made miserable and many men
and women driven to desperation
by the despisable practice of "knock
ing." .
Every one caught ''knocking,"
saying something ill about any
body else, is fined 1 cent. And if
every one who does this, had to pay
1 cent for each offense, the accumu
lated sum would soon be large.
There 'must be criticism, censure
and reproof; but "knocking" is an
evil habit. Some people "knock"
their neighbors, some their ac
quaintances, behind their backs,
some the city or state in which
they live, and some Are such
chronio "knockers" that nobody nor
anything suits them. They always
pull back, ' never push; always
hinder; never help.
There are orders . and societies
enough, goodness knows, but an or
der of "Don't Knockers," if it could
keep from "knocking" one another,
ought to be henefioial. !

0)1 Fever Rampant.
An Ashland correspondent to the
Portland Telegram, in Bpeaklng of tho
oil excitement In Jackson County, says:
save at Gold Hill where some phenom
enally rich strikes in the gold veins bave
been made during tbe past six months,
oil is talked of to tbe exclusion of tbe
precious metal, and the oil fever ap
pears to prcvade alt classes, breams
of a forest of derricks near by along
Bear creek valley are Indulged In by
men of conservative temperament and
solid hold'ngs In this favored region of
gold mines, rich farms, fine orobards
nnd pretty women.. The faith of many
is being backed by their money; nearly
everybody buys oil slock, and oil-boring
projects are being promoted by the
mnt substantial citizens, measured In
tbe dollars and cents of their belong
ings. . Let it be said tbe oil excitement
was a bae's of rationalism; there Is
really a chance to strike oil here, and
this view is supported by the best in
telligence employed in the geological
reconnalsanccs which have been made-
of tbe country. Six months ago a Cal
ifornia company placed a man in the-
distrlct south of Ashland. His opera
tions were well screened until he bad
acquired extensive land holdings; then-
it was learned that his employers were
large operators in the Southern Cali-
luruia uii ueiue, uuu uireufciy lb waff.
known they were lookiog for oil. Then
the Southern Oregon Oil Company came
Into being and proved to be a thing of
such rapid growth as to astonish its
sponsors. Fifty thousand shares were
early taken up In Ashland, and since
that time tbe stock Is being bought
daily all over tbe" country. Boston and
other towns in Massachusetts hare re
cently bought a large block. Other
states taking stock extensively are
Wisconsin, Iowa, Colorado, New York,
California, Missouri, Washington, and
also British Columbia. In Oregon,
Portland, Salem, Albany, Grants -Pass
and several eastern Oregon towns are
prominent buyers. This company has
puichased a fine new boring plant in
Chicago which is warranted for capac
ity to bore 50C0 feet deep, and barring
accidents, will begin boring the first
well within three weeks. F. M. Cates,
wno comes recommended as an experi
enced well-borer from Bakersfield dis
trict, California, has been employed to
handle the machinery."
Didn't Marry For Money.
The Boston man, who lately "married
a sickly rich young woman, is happy
now, for he got Dr, King's New Life

biliousness, fever and ague and all
liver and stomach troubles. Gentle but
effective. Only 2oc at Chas. Strang's

Smallpox at Yoncolla. -
Rosebouo, June 11, 1901. It has
been reported for several days past that
smallpox exists in Yoncolla, bat noth

-
Judge Thompson sent Dr. Twltcholl
yesterday in response to the request of

nine cases oi tne Disease existing, are
of which are In a very severe form.
Seven cases are within the corporate .
limits of Yoncolla and two just outside.. .
Judge Thompson, went to the afUiotedv
