A bold robbery ou the Cotton Belt
Railway occurred nt Bassett,.Tex., on
the train coming north, in which Postal
Clerk John N. Dennis was almost killed
and mail pouches of his oar rifled of
their content. The amount- stolen Is
Dot known. Dennis was hit a violent
blow on the bead as he opened the car
door, which rendered him insensible.
The thieves then rifled the car, securing
great doai of registered mail. .

held at New York last week was won

The fight last week between Terry
McUoveru and Joe Guns at Chicago is

The Fredouia state normal and train
ing school at Dnukirk, N. Y., was de
stroyed by fire recently. Seven persons
lost the r lives in the flames. The prop-,!

Paddy Ryau, at one time the cham
pion pugilist of the world, who was de
feated by John L. Sullivan in their

Charles Whelan, IS years old, woi
killed by an electrio cor between Lot
Angeles and Pasadena. He was on hit
wheel en route to Los Angeles, and tried
to go betweeu a telegraph line and a
mail car on the Los Angeles and Pasa
dena electric line. He was canght by
the car and thrown from bis wheel, hit
skull being fractured. He died on the
way to the hospital. The yonth wat
the son of a civil engineer now absent in
Nevada, and lived on Holliston avenue,
Pasadena.

homing crude oil, which will be substi

A cave at the bottom of the 1500-foot
level of the Pennsylvania mine, Brown's
valley, Yuba county, resulted in the
death of Albert Ooruelins, a nephew of
Naylor Williams, the superintendent
of the mine, who lives in Gross vallev,
John Barrett of Moouey fl:it received a
fractured thigh and internal braises.

this morning: "I havo for several
years had in contemplation tho estab
lishment of a weekly newspaper and
this seems an opportune timo for under
taking it.

study and discussion of public questions,
I have chosen this method because it

I have in view. Through such a paper
I shall be able to keep in touch with
social and political problems. The pa
per will at the same time, if successful,
provide an income sufficient for my
pecuniary needs, and this kind of work
will allow me more time with my fain
ily than I have been able to enjoy for
several years past.

pecially in college towns where I can
speak to students, but my principal
work will be done with the pen, or per
haps I shonld say with the pencil.
The paper will be called Tho Com
moner and will defend the principles
