The timber cut in eastern Maine this season will be the largest in years. The cut will reach 110,000, 000 feel; of this 40,000,000 will go into pulp. The price of manu factured lumber is higher than it was last year. .. So far as known the Belgian government is the only one having an offiuial rule that when men are being hoisted or lowered in a mine shaft a capable assistant is required to stand by the engineer to replace bim in case of sudden indisposition. The division of customs and in sular affairs of the war department has given out for publication a statement of the receipts of the Havana custom house for the month of August, 1900, showing that the total receipts for the month were 991,920. An official report sets forth that the health of our navy is particu larly good. It usually is though, from the beginning of things, this' !ame navy has had a propensity for making ihiogs decidedly unhealthy for other navies, under certain cir cumstances. During the fiscal year ending June 30, 1900, there were landed in the United States 448,551 immi grants. The eight leading coun ries contributed as follows: Austrc- Hungary, 148,847; Italy, 100,125; Russian Empire, 90,888; Sweden, 18,650; Germany, 18,510; England, 17,254; Japan, 12,906; Norway, 9,585. General Grecly has received a cablegram from China saying the Signal Corps line from Tien-tain to Peking, along the Pei-ho, has been completed. Withiu a short time it is ecpected, the Signal Corps line will be completed from Tien-tein to Taku, making a through connection over the military line from Peking to Taku. Automobiles are being tried by the postal authorities of New York City for the collection of mailB in upper New York. The net result of the twenty-two experimental trips made has been a saving of fifteen minutes on each trip. The trips have been made at times when the streets were very crowded, and but two instances of delay have been reported. Morocco has the smallest navy in the world. It consists of just one vessel the Hassini. Until recently the peculiar feature of this warship was thai it had no gum; but the Sultan, Abdul Aziz, has now pur chased at Cndiz four of the lightest pieces of ordinance left to the Span ish by the United States at the close of the war, and has had them mounted. He is thoroughly satis fied that in the event of a war with any of the powers the "reorganized navy would be able to sweep the eons. The friends of Sergeant Fowler, of the Forty-seventh Infantry, United Slates Volunteers, stationed in the Philippines with hea'dquarters at. Legaspi, have received news to the effect that he has distinguished himself in 'battle. . He shot and killed a young native lieutenant named Mnrous, and enptured his sword. Lieutenant Marcus' father, Mnrcellus Marcus, a man of wealth, on receiving the news of his son's DO. 42. death, organized a troop of 3,000 men and offered to left ear of any meml men and offered to pay $100 for the Bmber ol the Forty- seventh Regiment. Since then every Amr-ri(;ait killed near where the Forty-seventh is stationed has been found with his left ear missing. In the village of Bodra a Turk named Ismail, aged 120 years, is in such good health tbat be frequently walks to Bartin, six hours' distance, to sell eggp, for he is a poultry farmer. He has had 34 wives, the last of whom he mairied only a few davs ago The bride is 60 years his junior, and the marriage was cele brated with much solemnity to the nniinrl of flriimH and fifes an 1 of volleys from firearms. The whole village was en fete. The wedding procession included all the male progeny of the patriarch bridegroom, consisting of 140 Bons. grandsons and great-grandsons. The number of his female progeny is not stated. There is a pretty custom in vogue in Denmark which might with ad vantage be copied here. During the summer holidays an arrangement is made by which little Danes from town and country change places. The parents of town children send their little folks off to the country and receive in exchange country children. The result is that town children are strengthened and glad dened with country air sights, while the little rustics enjoy the pleasures of town life and the feeti vals which are for their benefit This exshange system results in 10,000 childieit from Copenhagen getting a country hiliday, and an other 10,003 are brightened up by a visit to the Danish capital. When European orders for Amer ican coal come in at the rate of half a million tons at once, as they are said to be coming now, it in time to reflect what this means. It seems to mean that the European mines are so nearly exhausted that it pays consumers in that cart of the world to buy coal in this conn try and send their own ships for it in preference to patronizing the mines which are, comparatively speaking, at their doors; and if this hypothesis is correct, it means an immense increase in our trans-At lantic coal trade in the immediate future, with a correspondingly ropi i depletion of our own supply. Look ing a little further it seems to mean that it is time science was finding a' satisfactory substitute for coil as a feuel and motive power'.- - - As the disciples of the chafing dish know, alcohol is not a fuel to be trusted. Instead of burning quietly ii sometimes shows such ex cess of service that it becomes dan gerous. There is good news for those who have found everything ablaze beneath and about the chaf ing dish, whioh w'll save them from any Buch trouble hereafter. A Ger man chemist baa discovered a proc ess or solidifying alcohol. His method is a secret, but tbat does not matter. The alcohol is pre pared in small cylinders enclosed in a tin box. It can be used for cooking, lighting or for any of the ordinary needs of life of that kind. The solidified alcohol is lighted and burns easily, but does not melt. It oan be carried on one's travels,' is always ready to heat the water for a cup of tea or to v arm the curling tongs. -Tlie mining laws of Oreeou for sale at this olllce. Ho.no Kong, Ot. 15 A rolumn of troops was dinpttehed this morn ing to the Kowloon frontier, with the object of barring armed refugees, either rebeh or imperial troops from entering British territory whan de feated. The rebels are reported to be 3000 strong 30 miles north of the British frontier. A thousand of Admiral Ho's troops are in pur suit of them, while 2000 Chinese troops have left Canton overland to. intercept the rebels. Admiral Ho has informed the government that the rebellion was carefully planned. The rebels are anxious to conciliate the villagers and gain the respect of foreigners, hence the absence of outrage and pillage. All indications point to, the rising being widespread. CT Twenty-ninth regiment; one civil ian, American negro, who were pris oners in hands of insurgents', have been turned over to General Luther R. Hare. ' More particulars soonr giving names of kilied and wound ed." "Mac Arthur."" New York, Oct. 15 S. M Mulne.'. a Philadelphia shoemaker, sent to Russia for bis wife and five chil dren. They arrived at Ellis Island -several days ago and were detained' because one of the children, a girl -eight years old, was an imbecile. The law prohibits absolutely the -admittance of an inBane person or an idiot into this country. A brrther ' of the woman, named ' Hodee,-of Youngstown, Ohio, saw Aeaistaatt Secretary of the Treasury Taylor" and arranged that Mulne should take the idiot back to Russia .while Mrs. Mulne and the four healthy- children should go with him to his home in Youngstown. Assistant Secretary Taylor "said that under no circumstances could the child be brought into this country. If the father was able to give bond to the amount of a million dollars that the child would be well taken care of and that it would never become a publio charge it would have no effect, as the law makes no provisions lor the enter- 'ing of idiots.
