Legislature, on Joint Ballot, Will
Have Republican Majority
of Twenty-Eight Votes.
The election of last Monday was
hotly contested one both in
counties and congressional districts,
but the Republicans won the day
in all localities.
' In the first congressional district
Tongue has, with incomplete re
turns in, a plurality 01 nearly duuu,
while in 1898 his total plurality
was but 2037. Moody is elected in
the second district.
- The legislature will stand on
lomt ballot, 58 Republicans and 31
iusionists and citizens. Of these
the senate has 20 Republicans and
10 fusionista, the house, 38 Repub
licans and 21 fuaiomsts.

In Jackson County the Republi
cans elected every man on the
ticket except the candidate for.
county judge.

HOW MEDFORD
WILL CELEBRATE.
The several committees appointed to manage the
Fourth of Julv celebration affairs for Medford have been
"rolling logs" so to speak, in
gure success. They are ngunng on expending tuny $uu.
Among the features will be

Thara will be an abundance of band music at intervals
during the day, and there will

The speaking will take
school house, where seating
people will be provided.
The parade will be made
car, the Angel of Peace car,
business interests of Medford,
representing the thirteen original states, carnages bedecked
in festive style with roses and various kinds of flowers.
The callithumpians, in all their gorgeousness, will ap
pear at 1:30 p. m. John Hardin is captain of this last
named featnre and he is inviting recruits. John Bellinger
has been elected to represent the Ethiopian, Goddess of
Liberty. There will be an
several cages of wild animals
of like nature.
There will be a multiple of races of various nature.
In the evening there will be fireworks. Finest display
ever seen in Southern Oregon.
There will be dancing all day and evening.
The Republicans scooped the
whole workB in the stale and we
folks here at home came very near
making a clean sweep. We only
ioH t to men out of fourteen which
is pretty good considering the lies
and treachery we were compelled to
go up against. That we lost Nar
rjgan and WatBon is to be regretted,
but it could not have been avoided.
Both these candidates were handi
capped by not being able to can
Tiss the field personally and could
not therefore refute the falsehoods
whic'i were put up by the oppoeing
party.
For doddess of Liberty.
The contest for our Fourth of July
Goddess of Liberty IB warming up cod
e'derably. There are no new candi
dates in the field and of those men
tioned last week the rivalry seems to
be between Miss Lillian Barr and Miss
Tessie Saltmarab, with the latter in
the lead with 715 votes to ber credit,
while Miss Barr is a swift second with
615 votes. The contest .will close on
June 10th. Following in the score as

Governor Geer has received from an
eastern paper a telegram asking his

met at the town hall Wednesday even
ing to discuss the advisability of organ
izing u poultry association for Rogue
River Valley. Some twenty-live of the
leoding poultry raisers have expressed
themselves af enthusiastically in favor
cf such an organization, and a meeting
was called for Saturday, June 16, at 2
o'clock p. m., when it is hoped that all
who are interested in the advancement

summer term In the Walk I us district.
Pupils in No. 19 are interested in
their literary society which hits re
cently been organized.

Several sohool houses were used for
voting places on Monday. Election day
is a legal holiday for schools so that
teachers will not need to make up that
dav.
Visits to the schoolB in districts 1;,
10, 4'.', 51 and 81, gave opportunity of
noting the work of Ave wide awake
touchers. Pupils In Uio mountain dis
trict are eager to learn and easily led
when in charge of competent teachers.
The people of Lake Creok district
and some from adjoining districts
crowded in and about the school house
on the evening of May 30th Ui onjoy a
program rendered by pupils of Miss
Nellie Towoe. Selections were well
chosen and rendered with a vigor that
met with general approval. The ill rec
tors of this district demand good
teachers and the patrons are standing
by t hoi r school in proper shape.
The Dewey school is again at the
front. A year ago a successful program
and picnic closed the spring term and
gave such general satisfaction that It
was the wish of all to try the same plan
again. Last Friday the pupils, in
.charge of their teacher, Miss Zuda
Owens, gave a progiam that was worth
going miles to hear. Patrons of the
Bohool and friends from near and far
wore present. The sohool house could
not hold the crowd, but there was room
outside and much of It was appropri
ated. After the program a feast was
served by the ladles, which in quality
would tempt the appetite of the most
exacting epicure, and for quantity was
far in excess of the demundB of the
hungry throng. The Medford high
sohool band furnished good music, and
short speeches were made by T. B.
Ellison, N. L. Narregan and G. A.
Gregory. Patrons, teachers and pupils
are united in this district in making
the school the center of their common
