' Much attention hoi bri given of late
to! what we ma; call the strange eae
of Clipperton island. It Is not more
than three miles In circumference, and
It Ilea In the western Pacific something
Mka 800 miles west of Mexico. In the
wide exnanse of the Paclllo ocean It
hows like a mere speck, so small as
io be of no value, seemingly, safe as
refuge for few of lbs army of beach
toinbers "wso bare curat an puuuu.
est habit and. hare wandered far sway"
As the course of their downward proff
toes. But the ownership of Clipperton
Island hsa of late-been claimed , ly nc
fewer than four eonntrles-M eilco, the
(tatted States, 'Franca and UreaK Brtti
ain; and when. It is added that tha is
land it a favorite haunt of sea birds,
and that many tons of "valuable guano
are waiting to be picked op, the reason
for this unwonted solicitude, even in
an era of. land-frabbinf, will be ap
parent, i ' " '' '
Clipperton island Is of Interest In an
other direction; It le one of those nu
merous stretches of land set. In the
ntdat of the seas, sunny and otherwise,
-which, after their first discovery, for
many years elude all endeavors to lo
cate them again.-- It hae now been, as
tt 'were, nailed down in one particular
- spot in the ocean that is to any. Its
exact position has' been finally deter
mined by -warships sent out for the ex
press purpose of searching tor tt and
settling all doubts as to ita existence
and the .only- thing, remaining now ie
that the question of ownership should
be settled!' It happens that there is
another island about 400 miles south
west of Clipperton, and-' rich in the
same deposits that make that place
worth possessing, for which adventur
ona miners are at this moment looking.
As late aa July laat a vessel named
Moonlight left AlUta,- Mexico, on a
royage in search of this latest mysteri
ous island, and apent'Sl days of fruit
less labor toward this end.- Her cap
tain failed to find the place, and, fear
xg that his provisions and water would
run abort, returned home to report that
cither the rough charts of old Dept.
alartin and hie associates were in er
ror or else that some strange seismic
phenomenon had caused the lost isle
to disappear years ago, perhaps, for all
that mortal soul knows. Spice is add
td to this romance by the fact that
another 'Frisco captain located the
place definitely a year or two before,
and found a small colony there, which
eolnoy is still on the island, shipping
guano in their own schooners, manned
by numbers of their own party, to tha
leading porta on the Pacific slope of
North and South America.
Quite a number of expeditions have
of" late been made with the object of
wresting this valuable secret from the
handful of men in whose possession it
is, and of participating in the spoils:
and one of these days we will, no doubt,
hear of a sanguinary fight for the su
premacy between the present colonists
Mid a party of marauders. Although
the stories told about the unknown is
land vary considerably, they all agree
that it exists somewhere about 400 or
COO miles southwest of Clipperton, in
a low coral atoll covered with the rich
est phosphates.' The plnce also has its
legends of pirates treasures, which
may or may not have had any founda
tion in fact. One of the expeditions of
recent date, which have been fitted
out to look for the island, was the Vine
expedition. That vessel's owner claims
to have secured his knowledge of the
place from the old sea captain named
Martin,- above referred to, who died
some years ago, and who left an old
chart among his belongings, which told
of a small island in the south Pacific,
not :down on the regular charts, enor
mously rich in guano. Mew Zealand

Wk Victoria Weal Vlsltlasr.
It- is difficult to imagine Queen Vic
toria aa a window cleaner; but little
princesses, like other little girls, enjoy
"keeping house," and this incident if
novo, land true: ' When a little child
Princess Victoria went with her mother
to visit Queen Adelaide. The duchess of
Kent was obliged to le ve the little one
alone with the' queen for some time,
and the latter, to make the princess feel
at home, said: ' "Now, my dear, you
have an hour to spend with me, unci you
shall do exactly as you like." VExaetly
as I like?"- said the little princess,
doubtfully. "Yes," replied the queen,
little i imagining what was to follow.
"Then, dear Aunt' Adelaide," said the
child, "may I be allowed to clean the
windows?" Queen Adelaide was start
tied, but the little one had her way,
setting to work with sleeves carefully
rolled Up and an apron tied round hei
waist. Golden Penny.
rsuloi Anitil Ills Horse.
Col. Funston sat on his horse, watch
ing his Kansas boys fire at the enemy
at Caloocan, when an orderly came up
with the commanding general'B com
pliments, and an order to stop firing.
"Cease firing!" shouted the colonel.
Only a few of the nearest men heard
him, and the firing kept on. "Cease
firing! " ordered the colonel again, and
this time the bugle gave forth the peal
aud the firing, after scattering, stopped
. Altogether. Just then a ball from the
insurgents drilled the neck of the
. colonel's pony. ' Quick as a flash Funs
ton whirled around, fire in his eyes.
-"Commence firing!" he shouted, at the!
top of his voice. "Give 'cm at 900
yards!" It took three or four rounds
, of ammunition nil along the line to
avenge that horse, though the colonel
jartlll rides it. Leslie's Weekly.
