Commissioner Hermann of the General Land Office has recom mended that the land office now at VVeare, Alaska, be moved to Ram part City, which is sixty miles further up the Yukon. In the Island of Minora the hum ming birds are pugnacious little creatures. Thousands of them fre quently attack huntsmen without any provocation, inflicting some times serious wounds on the face and neck. . Jack Carr, Alaskan mail carrier, has broke the record from Dawson to Skagway, coming out in ten days. He reports that the Yukon is giving its first signs of breaking np and that the ice will undoubtedly go out very early this year. A newspaper is published in Paris exclusively in the interests of professional beggars. It notes the times and places of holding fash ionable funerals, weddings and pop ular meetings, besides furnishing other news of Interest to mendicants. San Francisco has a saloon on the corner of Hulleck and Sansome streets, the floor of which is inlaid with Unole Sam's silver dollars. Seattle, Wash., has one on the cor ner of Front and Marion streets, the floor of which is inlaid with Unole Sam's double eagles. Sheriff Behrens, of Redding, has ordered some bloodhound pups from Lexington, Ky., which he will raise and use if necessary for hunting criminals escaping from-justice. A well armed'criminal, however, could shoot them about as easy as any other dog. Yreka Journal. The United States revenue cutter Thetis is to be fitted out for a cruise in the Okhotsk sea and along the coaBt of Siberia. The postal de partment proposes to use reindeer to carry the mails in Alaska, and it is for the purpose of securing the proper breed of these animals that the Thetis has been sent to the Arotio. A movement has been started by former residents of Vermont to erect a memorial to Admiral Dewey, to be placed at the entrance to the state bouse, in Montpelier. Ex Governor Levi P. Morton, ot New York; Senator John M. Thurston, of Nebraska, and other Vermont ers by birth are interested in the project. It is proposed to erect an appropriate statue. There are 184 distilleries in the United Kingdom, and 143 of them are in Sootland, At the end of Maroh, 1898, the accumulated stock in bond amounted to 137,500,000 gallons. For many years the prod uct of whisky in the United King dom has been far in excess of con sumption and export. The total rail shipments ot lum ber and shingles from Washington for 1S98 amounted to 30,123 cars; lumber, 10,400 oars; and shingles, 19,623 oats. Taking the combined shipments of lumber and shingles by rail only, coupled together as one solid train, the care containing this lumber and shingle output for the year 1898 would present a train NO. 14. 228 miles long. The shingles alone would make a train 149 miles' long. Captain William A. Andrews, who crossed the Atlantio to Paris in 1878 in a small boat, the Nau tilus, will on June 17 of this year start on another voyage across the Atlantio in a tiny craft. The boat will be constructed of aluminum and canvas, and will be small and light enough when collapsed to carry under the arm. The voyage, Captain Andrews calculates, will take bim 60 days. , As the result of reading a sensa tional story about cerebro spinal meningitis, Bertha Scbreiber, of St. Louis, is dangerously ill of tbatdis ease, according to the statements made by ber physicians. ' Hers is what is known In the medical world as a case of sympathetic contagion. The young woman is lying at the point of death. She is attended by three physicians, who declare the case most peculiar, although simi lar cases have been chronicled in the medical records. , On Monday of this week when everything in Southern Oregon was covered over with a warm spring sunshine, the people of the Middle Western states-were having blii zards. The telegrams of April 3d told us that at Salina, Kana., ''The worst blizzard of the year is in progress today." At St. Joseph, Mo., "Another blinding snowstorm is raging here today." At Dee Moines, Iowa, "It has been snowing here for 36 hours, with no evidence of letting up." In another part of Iowa, "The heaviest snow ever known here in April is falling Railroads and street cars are oper ated with difficulty. Fifteen inohes of snow since Thursday is the record." The railway from Manila extends up the middle of the valley along which our troops have been advan cing, says a writer who is familiar w.th the country. The country in which recent operations have taken place i very flat, and is simply a succession of rice fields. Between this valley and the sea ib a low range of hills, and on the other hand is the coast range of moun tains, perhaps 5000 or 6000 feet high. The rice fields are quite small and are separated by dikes, so that they can be flooded. It is an excellent country for defensive operations. The natives can use the dikes for trenches, retreating from one to another, and then abandoning a position, they , can flood the fields and thus hinder the advance of our men. Sugar and rice are the principal crops of the Philippines. ' Millet, mize, sago and indigo do well and are ordinarily 1 profitable crops. Philippine coffee, of which there were formerly many plantations, has a peculiar rich and pleasant flavor. " Cocbanuts, pineapples, ba nanaB, oranges, grapes, figs and many other fruits grow almost spontaneously. , The ; Philippines abound in valuable woods for build' ing furniture, dye woods and some yielding gums. According to the best authority nearly two-thirds' of the land is still public and passes to the United States with the title. If opened for settlement' to soldiers many of our young men will remain auil become v permanent settlers. Some associations of this kind have already been organised. The price of improved land ranges from 94 to $20 per aore, depending upon the location and value of improvements. An inquisitive person in New- York city has been examining the Easter hats, and she says the women of that city spend $500,000 each Easter for hats. As for this year's variety she says: I'l give you my word some of them meas ured two by three feet. If size is what you are looking for, you will find it in the April extravagansa and you will pay for it. In fact, the hat seems to be in direct ratio to its traditional bill.! Humility has a way ot showing itself in blush es that cost $14 a bunch. Clever French roses they are, with such a natural look that the Fifth avenue bee pauses to sip of their painted honey. The price of a single hat,, to be really swell, must be at least . $35. After that, anywhere into the hundreds. Fifty dollars is by no means an uncommon price for a .
