FRUIT PROSPECTS. From the Oregonlan ot Feb. 13th. ' 'The farmers of Rogue river valley are setting out more trees to winter apples every year,' says J. S. Howard, a well known citizen of Medford, now in Portland on business. 'Those who are fortunate enough to have bearing trees have never been compelled to sell these apples (or less than 50 cents a box, while this season they got from 65 to 75.' "He mentions among the large or chards low bearing near Medford, that of P. W. Olwell. of 160 acres. There are 11,000 trees in this tract, and these trees ought to average five boxes each for the season. "J, H. Stewart has 240 acres o( an orchard, mostly devoted to winter ap ples. Mr. Stewart has done away with bis Deach trees, as he considered the crop a precarious one, and the fruit had to be taken care of within a very (ew days to ke;p it from spoiling. "Weeks Si Orr have 200 acres in fruit trees, about half of which are peaches. This firm is well fixed for saving the fruit, having large driers in operation as the crop ripens. "J. D. Whitman has 60 acres in winter apples of the Ben Davis variety. These apples are supposed to Keep un til spring, so they need not be marketed until the price goes to the top notch. "J. A. Whitman has lust set out 80 acres In winter apples, while on the Orchard Home traot there are 200 acres of healthy trees just coming Into bear ing. "A good many farmers are setting out orchards In the foothill lands, and find the trees do as well, if not better, than they do on the bottom. Mr. How ard looks for a fine fruit crop in South ern Oregon In 1899, as the cool weather has kept the blossoms back, and there will be very little danger Irom late frosta." CLIMATE AND CROP SUMMARY.
