E.iitob Mail: In your last issue
my valued friend, Betsyannspikes,
tolls of a little hunt participated in
by KJatne and Hardin, of Medfird,
and myself. I notice she says they
killed two deer, and then goes on
to show bow Hembree killed the
dog. Now the fact of the matter is
that Hembree killed both deer, and
it was clearly proven that he was
the only one in the crowd who
could hit a dog at twenty-tour feet;
besides he was detailed Kt kill it.
But, say, there was another little
ncident of that trip that Betsyaun
did not tell. When we started on
that hunt Kame bad a bis jus
bioh had a smell peouliar to jugs,
and Hardin was armed with one
of those small, flat bottles you get
up on the corner and carry in your
inn pocaet. jonn said it was lor
medicine, his stomach's sake, etc
When we started home said .flask
was empty, so John filled it with
soda water, and after driving the
oork in tightlv. placed it in his
pistol pocket. We had driven down
Uutte oreek as far as tbe Hanlev
ranch, when there was an explosion
in the back of the hack Tike a dozen
Chinese bombs let off at once, and
Hardin fell to tbe bottom of the
wagon with the cry, ''I am shot."
Kama and I assured him that
neither of our guns bad been dis
charged, but all we could get out.
of him in response was, ''I am
killed. Hembree has shot me :
n leel tbe hot blood running
down my hip." Upon investigation
we found the cork had blown out
of hia bottle and the soda, as it run
down the inside of his trousers, was
mistaken tor blood.
As I was the only ono who had
killed anything on the trip, of
oourse John swore I had shot him
also. Now, I may not be able to
tell a dog from a panther, but
oan tell soda water from blood.
John has never told this, but
thought you should know it.
lours respeotfully,
W. H. HuMniiEB.
