' Mother Goose had a husband. His name was Isaac Goose. Her rhymes were first printed by her son-in-law, Thos. Fleet, a printer in Boston. In Bielefield, Germany, there is a colony of epileptics, numbering about 1500. The colony was estab lished in 1868, and patients from all parts of the world go there for treatment. It has been calculated that the loss from illness averages 20,000,000 weeks of work in the year, or 2J per cent of the work done by the whole population between 15 and 05 yearB of age. Theodore Camp, of Mt. Vernon, N. Y., has been teaching school for over sixty-two years, and now, al though in the eighty-first year of his age, is still energetio, and seems to have a deeper interest than ever in bis class of boys and their Btudies. It is Baid that the castor oil plant is abhorred by nearly all members of the animal world ; that moles may be driven from a lawu by planting a few castor beans in it, and that neither the terrible "army worm," nor the all destroying locust will eat it. What is known as the Palouse country, in Washington, claims, and apparently with good cause, to be the banner wheat section of the world. Within a radius, of six miles of the center of this district this year 2,000,000 bushels of wheat were harvested. Ned Glover, his wife, Ann Solo mon, and ninety-five of their de scendants still live on the old Solo mon plantation in Twiggs County, Georgia. They were formerly slaves, were married in the but they still occupy, and the five generations represented have yet to mourn the first death among them. The heads of the family are somewhere be tween lJ5 and 100 years old. Tugboats are the draft horses ot the sea. Rew York harbor has 400 of them aud. the average run is about $30 a day. This makes a daily average of $12,000, or $72,000 a week, or $3,744,000 a year, which gives an Idea of the amount of ship ping that is handled there annually. As many as 300 ships have entered the harbor in a day. The price of a tug ranges between $5000 and $12,000. Miss Lotta Burns, famed as the "mother of Klondike," having been the first white woman to live at Dawson, took her bicycle with her on her last trip to that place. She had no Booner landed in Dawson than scores of miners were bidding for it. The offers went up until they reached $700, when a young man named MoWilliams beoame the owner of the hrst wheel ever seen in the Klondike, "General" Coxey once leased a farm and after oooupying it a year was told that the rent was to be doubled. He induued a neighbor ing farmer to help him fool the landlord by saying: "If you don't want to rent Coxey your farm at the old price he can have mine at that figure." The landlord refused to yield, whereupon Coxey insisted upon having the neighbor's farm, which, after a lawsuit, he scoured, the neighbor having in presence of a wituess made the offer. Of course, the second farm was much the more valuable. Voting by maohinery was tried in . Rochester, N, Y., at the last election, where seventy-three poll ing plaoes in the oily were fitted NO. 48. with the latest device for recording the voters' political preferences au tomatically. This practical trial demonstrated the machines to be capable of doing all that is claimed for them by tbo Inventor, and the experiment was a success in every way. Within thirty-seven minutes after the polls olosod the entire vote of the city, 27,838, bad been counted and the results turned in at head quarters. Printed ballots mty now be considered a thing of the past, together with the labor of reading, tallying and checking off the names thereon. The Ye!:ow river, which has been named the "Sorrow of China," is probably the most . destructive stream on earth. In less than 100 years it has changed its channel four limes and the point where it empties into the sea has from time to time been moved up and down the coast, a distance of 300 miles. It ruiiB through a vast alluvial plain, and is fed by streams from a great system of mountain ranges in the north. When the snow melt ing on this range cotres at a time of heavy rains, the result is sure to be a terrific flood. It has been es timated that in the past three cen turies over 10,000,000 human be ings have perished in the floods of the Yellow river. For destructive ness, both of life and property, this stream is unparalleled, and the soubriquet bestowed upon it is amply justified by its history. The Philadelphia Inquirer says: "A bill has been drawn up in this city and will be presented to cou gress this winter asking for a for feiture of the land grant given to the Northern Pacific Railroad Com pany, to aid in building the road. The ground upon which the for feiture will be asked is that in the late reorganization of the company the lands and other assets have been diverted from their original uses for the benefit of the Northern Pacific Railroad Company. It is claimed that this latter company is an illegally constituted corporation organized in violation of the rights of stockholders ot the Northern Pa cific Railroad Company by a self constituted committee. It will also be charged that the trustees of the railroad company have purchased and sold the stock of the railroad company for profit, while acting as trustees. Th bill is now being per fected by counsel. The two items following are from an Alaska paper: "The new strike made on Thistle creek, which empties into the Yukon 20 miles above Stewart river, seems to be of a good character. The gold found is coarse. Prospectors got 25 and 50 cents to the pan on bed rock, but one man got $1.20 to the pan and excitement ran high." "An interesting "grubstake" contest is at present pending before the gold commissioner. J. Herd was "grub' staked" by F. H. Bense. Both men secured valuable adjoining claims on French Hill. Herd now refuses to give Bense his percentage for furnishing the "grubstake." The gold commissioner's opinion will be a precedent for several similar cases." Santiago is three hundred and eighty-four years old. It was a populous town before the May flower ever anchored off the rock bound coast of the present state of Massachusetts, and when the sites of our greatest American cities were untrodden forests. It was in corporated as a city in 1522, waft once the capital of Cuba and dur ing all its existence until now it has been under the dominion of Spain. Never Camo Back. : MKDPORD. Ore.. Saver, who is now a resi dent of University Park, writes that they are settled in their new home and like the location very much. He says: "The university is a fine building, commanding a good view of the city, river and mountains. Hts. Hood, Adams, bt. Helens and Rainier loom up in grand view. No place on this green earth presents such magnificent scenery as this location. A splendid class of peo ple have come here to educate their children, and parents who wish to giye their boys and girls a . good college education, will find this the ideal place." He also sends a let ter received by his little daughter from one of the Dakota soldiers, who is now in Manila, which ap pears below: . , ., , Headquarters 2nd Battalion,) First North Dakota Inft. j. Manila, P. I., Sept. 30, 1898. ). Miss Ethel Sayer, Medford, Or. My , Dear Miss: Just three months ago today you represented our state in your Decoration day parade, and on that same day ; we passed through your city, on our, way to fight fur our country the' same as those brave men did thirty seven years ago, and whose graves you so proudly helped to cover with (lowers, and at that lime it struck me to take your name and address and send you some little souvenir just to thow that we appreciated you as our representative. - Of course we can t Bend you part of the city that we captured on the ldth of August, and although the Spanish prisontri a'l want to join our aruiy, still you would have no use for one, because they are an unsatisfied lot and America can do without tbem; but I will tend vou' a full Bet of Spanish buttons and collar number of the 73d Regiment cut from one of their white uniforms. This regiment has been famous iu all Spanish wars for over 100 years, and I only hope you are- large enough to have the buttons put on your next jacket and dress. If you are not old enough maybe you have a teacher or some person in your own family who would like them, and perhaps I can nnd something more suitable to your age; still everyone around our home writes us every day for them, and I only hope you will be pleased with them anu if you have time drop us a lino, telling about your home, etc. I am acquainted with quite a few Oregon boys and they are a fine, brave lot of fellows and your state can be proud of them. Yes, the whole western part of the United States can be proud of their young manhood, not only for their, looks, for their actionB wheu they were given a chance were better than could be expected from a lot of raw men, as they were. '. : ; Well, I must close for this time but may write you again some day should a reply from you or occasion, ever demand. Yours truly, C has. S. Cairnchobs,' Sergt. Major, Darius HvstasDes in 480 B.
