The increase in the foreign trade of the United States this year ex ceeds 111 value the entire toreign trade of the country for any year preceding 1850. Thirteen transmississippi states including the Pacific slope, which gave a democratic-populist majority of 269,000 in 1896, show a republi can majority this year of over 11,' 000. In response to an appeal by Gen Wheelerover 100 American colleges have each offered to take two or more young Cubans to be educated free. The humanitarian Bide of the Cuban question is not overlooked The meetings held in Cuba to favor the speedy organization of an independent republic prove nothing except that if the United State? should withdraw at this time there would be civil war between the six provinces, and that no two could agree. 1 The Mail is thankful that it has added ten new subscribers to its list since last week and that sev eral old ones have renewed. We are thankful further that Med ford merchants have had a good busi ness the past season and that Med ford is a city good enough for any white man to live in. The Telegram Is Mixed. From tbe Portland Telegram "When the Dakota volunteers wore on their wa; to San rranciaco the train stopped at Medford, Or., for a short time. "It wa- July 4, and a celebration was being hold. One little eirl was dressed to representTexas, which attracted tbe attention of one of the Dakota boys, who was a native of Texas. He went to her and picking her up carried her through the train. She toid him her name, and not long since she wns sur prised to receive a Ion? letter from the soldier who is now in Manila. In the letter were the buttons clipped' from the uniform of a Spanish soldier of the Seventy-third regiment, which the writer says Is the oldest Spanish regi ment now in existence, Its organization dating back to the glorious days of spam. "The father of the girl was In Port land a day or two ago and showed tbe letter and the buttons to the Indies at Bed Cross headquarters. He says his little girl is very proud of the buttons, and will write a letter to the soldier who sent them to her." The Telogram's reporter who wrote tbe above is mixed to a degree border ing onto an exaggerated case of pre varication. Tbe Dakota bovs did not go through Medford on July 4th; there was no celebration here on July 4th, and there was no little girl represent ing Texas or any other state on that' day. Since the above was put in type we tave received a letter from A. N. Talcott, who is nut only thoroughly qualified but has titet and enthusiasm. Much interest was awakened in rapid and accurate addition by choosingsides and competing. Many of the pupils nave oecome quite expert. A map drill on the status by a beginning class wns unusually good. The school board did the proper thing by employing Mr, Talcott for the spring term before the mil term closes. Away up in the hills, south of Talent, among the firs, pines and laurels, Nellie Towne di penses wisdom to a willing flock of intelligent pupils. She is wide awake and up-to-date. A rending by the teacher for an opening exercise was as well chosen and rendered as any thing yet heard in tho county. Tholes- son in the second reader was ubout the bluebird and wrens. One of the pupils had brought a wren to school that morning and it was uted with excellent results in conducting a language lesson in connection with tho reading 1 'shoii. The rain last Friday was doubtless a good thing lor tbe country at large, al though it made the roads in places al most impassable, preventing some from attending the local Institute at Gold mil on baturduy, yet th 3 meeting was a good ono. Only one topic of the pro gram was omitted. Each of the tun teachers present were there to receive aid in the various lines of work dis cussed and it was the unanimous ex pression that much good was done. . Gold Hill people continued the ex cellent example of Eagle Point patrons by Inviting all visiting teachers to their homes for dtnnor. A. T. Holt, of Talent, saw the rain cloud approaching, bought a S. P. ticket and arrived dry shod twelve hours ahead of those who drove In. 3. Haromersley was an enthusiastic participator in the meeting. It is verv uesiraoie mat pairons snouiil aa pres ent and take part in these local institutes. Some of the bright bovs and girls of Gold Hill school wero in attendance through the day. Thatisrlght. Some of them will soon be teaching and it is none too soon to Be gathering ldeus that may be useful. The rain at the beginning of the after noon session did not prevent a goodly number of patrons from lending their encour.iging presence. After a little discussion on the sub ject of school law revision by tho stato legislature next session it was unani- nguiiibt the men who have boon found guilty of such uttptttriotio practice and they stand excellent chances of being sentenced long terms in tho penitentiary. s 44ft4444444444444444444$ thoro in no hotter Print miulo limn RESPECTFULLY, Peuel 8 Stevens Brins Your Old Stoves To SHONE & SCHERMERHORN'S Second Hand Store and Exchange them for.
