This society is auain at work with
renewed interest nnd strength. There
are a ready fifty voices in the chorus
with many more arranging to enter.
New music bas been secured upon
which vigorous rehearsals have begun.
The musical people of Ashland,
Grants Pass, Jacksonville, Medford,
Phoenix, Central Point and surround
ing country will meet in Medford for a
five days' convention, December 26th to
30th, inclusive. One of the best con
ductors on the Pacific coast has been
employed to take oharge of the work.
A fine orchestra of eleven instruments
has been engaged to assist and several
features from abroad are being ar
ranged for. Local ohoruses in several
places are now at work on seleolions to
be used at the convention. By working
on these selections before the conven
tion opens it is possible for any one who
can sing even a little toonter the grand
otiorus and participate in what will be
the greatest musical gathering ever
held in Southern Oregon.

McKinley has developed his policy
toward Porto Rico and the Philip
pines. It ia as follows:
First There will be no extra
Bession of congress next spring, bar
ring grave emergencies.
Second T,be conquered islands
will be contiuued under a strong
military government.
Third All fiduciary positions
will be administered by array offi
cers. Fourth The islands will be kept
out of politics as much as possible,
until the American people have had
an opportunity to study them and
the national sentiment can crystal
ize as to the relation they should
hold to the United States.
Fifth The islands will probably
retain their present ourrenoy sys
tems, but these may be bolstered
