Yours truly, A. U. Smith. Oregon "Feeders" Are Scarce. alter S. Brown, a large stock raiser of Grant County, was inter viewed by the Portland Telegram last week. Mr. Brown had just put 1000 head of "feeders" on board the cars at Ontario. The "feeders" were 3-year-old steers, not fat enough for beef, but were purchased by Chicago eiocKinen, who will teed them dur nig tbe winter and fatten them for the early spring markets of Chicago, Mr. Brown also delivered 300 head of fat steers to 1'endleton butcher? last week. For these his firm was paid $35 a head, which he considers a good, miff price for 3 year-old steers, which were bought two years ago as yearlinir calves for to B each. It would be better fur the stock men and Oregon consumers. Mr. Brown says, if Oregon butchers had bought the cattle sent east during the past season; hut coast butchers buy only cattle which are fat enoueli to butcher right away, while east em buyers purchase their stock to take east ami fatten. This is the rea-on why Oregon has been ship ping cattle east which were reallv needed to supply Portlund, Puget Sound and Uritiah Columbia slaughter hcu-ee. Theie is bi. money even now for the man who has means to buy poor cattle and fatten them up in Oregon for butch ering next March or April. He thinks beef and mutton will be verv high about that time. fa Cfce tfmeeaa. "Bow many dollars a week does the fat lady get?" inquired the tattooed man. 'B'm f" sniffed the snake charmer.
