The last month's issue of county warrants were the first issued under the new rate of six percent interest. Notwithstanding this reduction of two per cent on the interest the warrants sold at their face value. The make-up of the next United States senate will be 54 republicans; 26 democrats and 10 populist or silver republicans. The '96 senate was 46 republican; 34 democrats and 10 populists or silver republi cans. The recent election has proven conclusively that the. people of these greit United States endorse the war record msde by President McKin ley and his associates. It proves again that the people want sound money a dollar that is one hun dred cents the world over not es cpecially because it bears the stamp of our mints but because it is a dol lar's value in all countries. iU resurrection in any form and the legislature which commits the error of reviving It, will saddle itself with odium whioh it will rightfully deserve. The Mail is opposed to creating fat salaries for oQioials who remlor no juBt return in necessary public service. Thomas 8. Mahtin, senator from Virginin, although bis term does not expire until 1901, wants to measure accurately the strength of the enthusiasm for the soldier, and has already begun his campaign fur the United States senatorship against General lutihugh Loo, whom ho beat four years ago. He has the baoking of the democratic maohine and the party leaders, is a free silver man and purposes to make his fight againBt General Lee on that issue. Senator Daniel's seat, which becomes vacant next year, is the prize at stake. A vic tory over General Lee four years ago was an easier task than a vio tory over the same gallant and very able general of today. General Lee is a hero ! .hmii.i h thankful for." and is entitled at least to as much One thing is ceriaui and that is that our courts of justice are almost strangled to death with litigation, but in spite of this condition of af fairs original cases which are wait ing to be tried for the first time are frequently set aside for weeks and months in order to give place to old cases which are being tried for the second time with perhaps the very same result. Evidently it is 'high time that radical steps were being taken to cure this evil. The supreme courts of Oregon -are at, least two years behind m regular calendar work. There is .something manifestly wrong some .place, and this wrong will undoubt edly continue just so long as every petit case before a circuit court is permitted to be appealed to the higher courts. There are very few cases appealed in wbicb the higher court reverses the decision of tho lower court. The only point gained by the appeal is a lucrative one, en joyed only by the attorneys, who . build fond hopes for their clients to look upon and this done for the purpose of securing bigger fees. The Spaniards suffered a greater defeat at our recent election than did the candidates who ran for of fice and were beaten. The Dons had been given a tip by someone that the people of these great United States were going to turn down every republican on the tickets be cause as a commonwealth we did , not approve of President McKinley's management of war affairs, but when pretty nearly everything went over whelmingly republican there was much discomfiture among the Span ish officials, since which time Span ish honor (?) has again asserted itself and they do not purpose to let go the Philippines. The Bpecial session of the legis lature repealed the act creating the board of railroad commissioners. It is now intimated by the press that the regular session will resurrect the old, or croate a new board. The cost of the old board to taxpayers has been largely in excess of the benefits accruing from its services. The public is now well rid of a costly experience which has been productive of no good results and the defunct board should be per mitted to sleep its last sleep undis recognition from his own party and his own people as has been accorded mm Dy omcials of bis opposing party. The defeat of General Lee would be a slap at President Mc Kinley for having recognized Lee's ability as a brave, fearless soldier. Portland papers are busy these times telling of the "invaluable service" the now retired railroad commissioners rendered the ship pers of the state. They tell that $350,000 was saved the shippers of eastern Oregon grain in the com missioners having secured a reduc tion in frieght rates to that amount. The remarkable feature in connec tion with this is that we did not bear of the saving until after the commissioners had been retired another evidence that the good we do our fellow man lives most prom inent after we have shuffled off. The only evidence which we have at hand of any important good done by the commissioners in Southern Oregon was the order which caused that large pine shade tree near the Medford-Jackscnville shortline to be reduced to fire wood because, as they alleged, it men aced the lives of travelers over this line. The regrt is that our fore fathers did not have railroad com missioners to order this tree cut down instead of allowing it to grow for an hundred years and all this time menacing the lives of travel ers on the early day cow trails which might have led by this par ticular forest giant. There are many things which we people have reason to be thank ful for this year. The president has designated next Thursday as a day of general thanksgiving it ought to be observed by all. There iB much which even the least of us can, with bended knees and rever end hearts, give thanks for. We have indeed had bountiful crops and the store houses are filled to the roof tops with sustenance for man and beast. The victories of an humane and just war are ours. Our people have taught all nations that the hand of oppression and tyranny cannot banish from earth all principals of right and justice to fellow man, and while we give thanka to a kind Providence for having guided the hand that taught this lesson, let us not forget that we people of earth are of one kin and to each and all of this family let us give the heart's sympathy und the charity deserved by a conquered nation.
