Prof. Brander Mathews, of the
chair of Englinh literature at Colum
bia university, asserts that English
is today spoken by about 126,000,-
000 human being. Its only com
petitor among civilized nations is
Russian, which is the mother tongue
of nearly 130,000,00') persons, while
the tii-erf of German number about
70,000,000, and the speakers of
French are a trifle over 40,000,000
strong. Using these facts us a basis,
Professor Mathews estimates that
if the present rate of increase among
populations should keep up for
another century English would be
spoken by more than 800,000,000
people, while Russian would stand
second with 500,000,000 users, and
German would be a bad third with
only 130,000.000.
