They are Black, T&n and Brown, and are cheap, too. When you want a nice Glove
call and examine them. Those Japanese goods are attracting the ladies' attention,

best thing you can do is to get into a "Racket."

J NEWS OF THE
CITY.
TnE Mail has always been a
firm advocate of the poliey of patroniz
ing home industry and home business
men, because there can be no doubt
that such a cause invariably results in
a very perceptible grain to the pur
chaser and at the same time acts
as a stimulous to the home merchant
a thing which, if he is at all reliable,
he is justly and umniistakably entitled
to. There have been some few cases
hereabouts of people sending to city
business 'houses for articles and in
which they were badly beaten, which
we could cite in support of the correct
ness of the course we have always
maintained on this question, but two
cases have come under our observation
recently which will fit in well as ex
amples and which should have a whole
some effect upon those contemplating
a repetition of the cases in question.
A gentleman, in this city, sent to a
well known firm of Ch'aago for some
articles, tne cost of which was three dol
lars, when the package arrived he was
confronted with a bill for expressaga
of just a few cents less than threa "dol
lars and fifty cents. After reflecting
for some time upon the advisability of
accepting the package be docided
that inasmuch as he had ordered it
he would see it through, but his
chagrin was not to terminate yet. As
soon as the articles were unwrapped
they were found to be of a quality in
ferior to that which could be purchased
in Medford at even less cost than the
"' original purchase price in Chicago.
The other case is even more flagrant
than the one just cited. A lady sent
to Xew York City for a cake stand,
which cost one dollar and sixty-seven
cents and her express charges were
four dollars and seventy-five cents. Is
there need of, saying more?
We now have several god im-

class insurance companies. Anyone

The young ladies, members of the
brass band, recently organized in this
city, have decided to " give .n en
tertainment during the holidays, the
proceeds to be applied , in purchasing
instruments for the band. They are
making very preceptible progress in
their work, and have entered upon the
enterprise with a determination that
is bound to culminate successfully, but,
realizing the necessity of having their
own instruments, and that the barrier
must be surmounted- before they can
' fully realize the succpss they desire to
attain, they have decided to take the
first step toward the consumation of
this neccessary adjunct. The enter
tainment will be replete with features
that are most likely to .entertain the
average congregation, and will consist
of farces, musical selections, both vocal
and instrumental, by the best talent in
the city, besides numerous other fea
tures that are bound to make the even
ing an enjoyable one. '"The Sweet
Family," that highly interesting oom
edy, will be presented under the aus
pices of the band as will also "Tenny
son's Dream of Fair Women." which in
themselves, would be worth the small
admission fee that will be charged.
Let everyone turn out and assist in
placing this enterprise on a substantial
basis. v

The concert given by the Choral
union of the Christian church at the
opera house Wednesday evening was
one of the most pleasing local enter
tainments of the season in Medford.
The genuine generosity of the Med
ford citizens and the unselfish interest
which they take iu church affairs of
the city are always sure to make these
entertainments successful in point of
attendance, and the local talent of the
city can be relied upon to do the rest.
At the time appointed to commence
the exercises, a good sized audience
had assombled to witness the exercises
and the hearty applause which greeted
the respective participants upon their
appearance infused in them the vigor
necessary to present their parts in the
creditable, manner which marked the
the entire program. The singing was
splendid, the recitations were all good
and the beautiful cantata, ''The
Season," was a fitting dessert for the
feast of good things to be seen and was
the chef d'zeuvre of the evening's
entertainment.
Fresh and cured meats,' sausages,
etc, can now be had at the Westside

We are sorry to learn that J. K.
Darnell has not received anv tidings of
the whereabouts of bis son Calvin, who
mysteriously disappeared a few weeks
ago, and the grave fear which has
been entertained, that he has been
foully dealt with, is likely to be con
firmed. Truokee, Calif., the place
where he was last seen, is considered
one of the toughest places in the state,
it beinsr inhabited 10 a great extent by
a very dangerous element, and the fact
that several similar occurences have
preceeded this one, lends color to the
apprehension fell here for the safety of
the young man.
The length of life maybe increased
by lessening its danger. . The majority
of people die from lung trouble. These
may be averted by promptly using One

An attachment was levied on the
Gray lumber yard iu this city Tuesday
by Richard Perry and J. Heek & Co.
The attachment was made to recover
money claimed by the above mentioned,
bnt there will probably be a settlement
of the claim without taking the matter
into court. The Mail hopes a settle
ment will be effected, as occurences of
this nature are always detrimental to
the best interests of a town, and Med
ford business firms have always main
tained a reputation for being the most
substantial on the coast.

Hardly a week passes but some
one is able to add another link to the
chain which is rapidly bringing Jack

berry producing community of more
than ordinary importance. D. T.
Law ton, of this city, left on our desk
this week, a branch of a red raspberry
bush, which is literally loaded with
berries, some ripe and others just be
ginning to ripen, while others were in

by the U. S. grand jury at Portland

false report, but the court ordered a
plea of not guilty entered and set the
date of his hearing December 21st.

the weather, they were greeted by a
fair sized audience, whose hearty ap
