Among the firms mentioned as already having talked business with Li are the Cramps. A mining fever has seized Canada. Thousands of laborers and men of small means ivave rushed to British Columbia, only to find that instead of expected wages of $3 per day, they were lucky if they could earn $1.23. Eight States have been represented at at the encampment of the Knights of Pythias at Minneapolis. There were present iu all ninety-live divisions and over 3500 knights. In South Essex county, the fruit gar den of Canada, the late peach crop is much better than the early crop was. It cannot be remembered when there was such an abundant crop of apples, anil a peculiar feature is that the okier orchards are l)earmg much more than young orchards. Trices are extremely low, bom:; hardlv enough to make it worth while to pick the crop. Much alarm is felt at Yokohama ocr ! a report of a great earthquake wnicti occurred in the northeast province of the mam island of Japan. The town of Rukogo has been littery destroyed, and several other towns severely dam aged. The United States Government will pay the hotel bill of Li Hung Chang and his suite at New York. There are thirtv-eight members in the partv. The Chinese guests, with the exception of the Viceroy, partake of American food. They did not deny themselves any lux uries, and when the bills are paid in Washington, the Waldrof will be about $12,000 richer. The Supreme Court of Albuquerque, X. M., has affirmed judgments of the lower courts in the cases or nine mur derers sentenced to death. Of these four were found guilty mainly through the confession of one of their number. All are Mexicans and members of a bad gang in Santa Fe county. On the night of May 29, 1802, they waylaid and killed Sheriff Chaves of that coonty and evaded capture three years. It is learned in the Foreign Office at London that Sir Philip Curne, British embassador to Turkey, left England with instructions in dealing' with the Sultan to act independently of the other embassadors to the Porte if the occasion should require iU Sir Philip is also to have free command of British naval aid to enforce such demands as he may make. Much interest is taken in dried fruit circles in the news that the first ship ment in several years of actual Zante currants, those grown on the island of Zante, has been made to New York. This shipment brings into prominence again the disputed currant duty ques tion of great interest to the California grower. Fred StuUke, a painter and leader of an Apostolic congregation in New lork, announces that the north pole has readied the sun and will melt the frozen mountains of ice, the waters will run down upon our earth and wash all the wicked into kingdom come. Baron Fava, Italian, embassador at Washington has been recalled by his government on account of its dissatis faction with his conduct in certain cases of lynching of Italians at New Orleans. Captain Adolph Frietsch, who crossed the Atlantic a year ago in a "cockle shell," has just started from Milwaukee to go around the world in a small sail boat. lie expects to be gone four years. Strong home rule resolutions were adopted by the Irish convention lately assembled in Dublin. Amnesty to all political prisoners was favored, and the so-called system of " semi-starvation " was condemned. During the session John Dillon, the noted leader and number of his friends were attacked, and were only protected from mob vio lence by the arrival of a large body of police. Charles J. Ilerms, an inventor and a personal friend and former business as sociate of Thomas Edison, committed suicide in Chicago recently. Several instances of mutiny have oc curred on board vessels of the Nippon Yuscn Kaialia lately, arising from an anti-foreign feeling on the par of Japan ese seamen as against their foreign officers. The Borth China Daily News says that the Japanese areflood.insJErmosa with paper money, which? the Chinese buy at a discount, and then send back to Japan and convert into silver at par. A Beaver Falls, Pa., dispatch says that at a meeting of the employes of the Ro chester Tumbler Works, held in Free dom, it waa decided by a unanimous vote not to accept the 20 per cent, redaction proposed by the firm. NiUn Indian Soldiers. India pays for her army, bat she does not pay for our fleet, and it is oar fleet and not her army which saves her from the invasions which if we lost command of the sea would in three years destroy at once her commercial prosperity and her immunity from internal disorder. She onght not to pay extra money for a project which is ours, but it is perfectly fair that she should pay the wages and expenses which Bhe would pay if the troops were at home. Her gamson is not the feebler, but the stronger, for a spell of foreign work, which reveals and cures defects of equipment, which binds officers and men together as nothing else does, and which, above all, gives the fighting races Sikhs, Pathans and Mahrattas an outlet for their inborn military spirit. There is no education for soldiers like a well managed expe dition, more especially if they are men who eniov it and if they belong to races which tend to despondency and fat if they never hnve anything to da We think it quite fine if Canadian or Australian regiments volunteer to help us, and not to mention that every native 6oldier is a volunteer who enlists nn com polled even by "the stern conscrip tion of hunger," among the Sikhs and Pathans, at all events, a call for volun teers would be answered by entire regi ments stepping to the front They love the excitement of campaigning, which to them seems life. It is nonsense to talk of "mercenaries" in an empire 100 years old. It is as much their interest while the empire lasts that it should succeed in war as it is ours, and, pro vided there is no conscription, we see no more moral objection to calling on her majesty's Indian than on her maj esty's British or Irish subjects to fight on her behalf. London Spectator. POLITICAL NOTES. New Words. It is a matter of surprise that the universality of the bicycle has not pro duced an extensive vernacular. As a matter of fact, the slang expressions in general use are but few. "Bike" is sim ply an abominable abbreviation of bicy cle. Cyclist is a legitimate and compre hensive word that is shorter than wheelman or wheel woman. In France the latter is called a "bicyclienne, " In faraway New Zealand the awful word "cyclodonno" has been coined as a sub stitute for wheel woman. In many west ern towns the fair rider is called a "bloomer" without regard to her cos tume. The word "scorcher, as indi cating a speedy cyclist, is fairly en grafted upon the language. In Chicago, however, the "scorcher" is called a scoot" The technicalities of the ma chine have led to attempts on the part of young men to com expressions. "Your tire is punctured" indicates that the story you are telling lacks the prob able clement of truth. Reckless state ments are called "coasting. " A very ancient yarn is not a "chestnut " but a "century." A young couple sharing a mutual fondness are "riding tandem." A man leading a fast life is "geared too high. " An old fogy is referred to as a "high wheel. " A chaperon is known as a "Dacemaker. A cheap bicycle is called a "gas pipe" machine, A profes sional racer is a "pro." New Orleans Times-Democrat . The Captain of Ths Standard. Charles Dickens was not a militant editor. Starting The Daily News with great zeaL he soon wearied of his self imposed task and resigned the editor ship, "tired to death and quite worn ont " But.in this century America has not had a monopoly of the fighting ed itor.. Captain Hamber, formerly iu con trol of The Standard, gave a conspicuous example of pugilistic 6kilL "Ho had driven down with Mrs. Hamber to the office, leaving her in the cab for a few minutes. While he was away the driver addressed her in tones she did not like. Tom, she said, when her husband re appeared, 'this man has spoken imperti nently. 'Get down from your perch at once,' said the journalist The man, with an oath, descended. Hamber based him first on one ear, then on the other. When the cabman squared up to the editor, the latter slipped at right and left into his opponent, polishing him off very neatly." Gentleman's Magazine. When sot up, they are of the same general pro portions as the regular chair, capable of adjustment and comfortable. Such chairs are made for the use of dentists who divide their time among different points, more especially in regions whore the transportation facilities are limited, as in parts of South Amerioa, and for more convenient handling in shipment to points diffionlt of access.--" The Republican state convention at Hartford, Conn., has nomimated Loris A.
