Clark and Harry Sanford left Pomona, to- prospect in Arizona. They crossed the desert between Ban ning and Yuma and have not been heard from. Two decomposed bodies have been found near Volcano springs, from which point the men were last heard from. The Desert Queen ' mine in San Ber nardino county is hampered by scarcity of water. The new International Club at San Diego, of which Mexican Consul Lom eli is president, will keep on file copies of all the important laws of Mexico affecting trade relations, mining, etc Dr. H. IL Belfield of Santa Barbara has declined the presidency of the Throop Polytechnic Institute at Pasa dena. Professor W. A. Edwards of the Pasadena High School has joined the faculty of the institute. David Douglas, Sheriff of Nevada oonnty, CaL, was found on the moun tain near Nevada City with two bnllet holes through his body. Near him was the dead body of a stranger, who is sup posed to be one of a gang of highway men who have been operating in that vicinity. Both men had been dead at least twenty-four hours when found. The proposed carnival of the Golden Qate which was to be held at San Fran cisco this winter has been put off until the spring of '97. Dr. H. C French preached last Sun day in a San Francisco church clad in bloomers and a sweater full bicycling costume. George F. McConnell of Portland, grand keeper of records and seals of the Knights of Pythias of that city, is a defaulter to the extent of (3000, and is a fugitive from justice. C N. Childs. formerly principal of the State Normal School at San Jose, CaL, has been succeeded by A. EL Ran dall, late vice-principaL Professor Cnilds was given a place as teacher of history. Governor Budd was credited with violent opposition to Childs. Long Beach, CaL, has voted to disin corporate.: It was a contest between the saloon and anti-saloon interests, the former winning by a small margin. The Tacoma Chamber of Commerce has been reorganised, and the new or ganisation is called the Tacoma Cham ber of Commerce and Board of Trade. A lumber, produce, manufacturers', maritime and real estate exchange is added. Word is received from Oak Point, Or., that a fieroe forest fire is raging in the canyfcn there. Between 1000 and 1500 cords of wood are already des troyed. It is supposed that the fire was started from the campfire of some fish ermen np the creek. Fire in Najoqni valley, CaL, destroy ed sixty acres of barley, fifty acres of hay and fifty acres of canary seed. The loss was 4000, with no insurance. Louis Heinrioh, a circus performer, also known as Louis Zanilla, who fell a distance of seenty feet from a trapexe wnue making a balloon ascension at Sacramento, died in a hospital without regaining consciousness. Heinrioh was a contortionist. No bones were broken by the fall, but he was injured inter nally. The home of the deceased was San Diego. "Jack" Kenny, keeper of the Rich mond, a notorious dive at Astoria, Or., shot A. Y. Ross, proprietor of the Asto ria Laundry, who was protecting his wife from Kenny's insults. , The shot was fired at a distance of six feet and resulted in only a flesh wound in the shoulder. Kenny is under arrest await ing a hearing. W. S. Wa"ker, the pioneer journalist of Los Gatos, CaL, has repurchased the Mail and will take possession immedi ately. The United States District Attorney's office at Portland has begun a crusade on the sheep and cattle men who have been causing trouble by encroaching on the Cascade forest reserve in the neigh borhood of Cloud Gap Inn, on Mount Hood. Six warrants have been issued for the arrest of sheep men now pastur ing their bands on the reserve and more are to follow. The Santa Clara Valley Kennel and Poultry Association of San Jose has de cided to hold its kennel and poultry show from November 18th to 21st in clusive. The association also decided to join the American Kennel Club. The East Clallam Lumber Mills on the 8traite of Juan de Fnca, owned by Earle St Donahue, have been destroyed by fire. The estimated loss is $50,000; insurance, $18,000. L. H. Plattor, a well known attorney and Democratic politician of Spokane, was shot and almost instantly killed in the corridor of the courthouse by Henry Belfert, a well known restaurant pro prietor and sporting man. The tragedy resulted from remarks made by Plattor In court which Seifert construed as a reflection on his character.. 'John W. Humble of South Riverside, CaL, nearly killed himself and his whole family in a drunken runaway ac cident. He apsat a four-mule team in which he and his wife and son were driving. Bauble's wrist was broken, Ua wife's spine wm injured and his sen Will peMy ale, ; The Northern Pacific Steamship Com pany has followed the lead of the South ern Pacific and has advanced rates on flour from $2 to $8 50 per ton. The last steamer to leave for Japan left 200 tons of flour which it could not carry. . The failure of the rice crop in the Orient and the consequent demand for flour accounts, it is understood, for the ad vance in rates. Instead of issuing bonds to bnlld a suitable house for high school purposes, the Board of Education of Santa Bar bara has leased the old San Marcos Betel, and will transform it into an edu cational institutioBu At" Commons City. Ala.i Maynard Covans and two young ladies, Miss Proctor and Miss Bishop, were out walk ing when a rain shower came up. They sought shelter in aa old building and during the shower the building col lapsed, killing all three. The rowboat Fox, containing the Swedish sailors, Frank Ear bo and George Sam ue loon, who started from New York on June 8th with the inten tion of rowing to Havre, France, ar rived at Sicily islands on the 1st Both the occupants of the small craft were in good health. The new opera boase at Pomona will cost $5500, and the first floor will be used as an armory by Company D, Na tional Guard of California. The Alameda county exposition is open at Oakland. The Prescott Board of School Trus tees has engaged Professor D. Ostrom of Riverside, CaL, as principal of the Prescott schools for the ensuing year. ORIGIN OF HOKEY POKEY. It is an actual fact that old ice cream Ls bought up by Italians and venders from restaurants and ice cream stands, frozen a second and third time, and again offered for sale, to be consumed by the newsboys and general public under the alluring title of hokey pokey, says the New York Herald. Almost every night these venders make the rounds of all the hotels, and buy up whatever has been left over from the day previous. -This, cream has all been melted more or less to its original consistency, and if it is still frozen when they get it there is but little left but fluid by the time it has reached Brooklyn and the Italian quarter. This melting process is the cause of all the danger. Cream once having been frozen and again melted very readily turns sour. In' this stage it is poisonous. The vender of hokey pokey cares little whether or not the cream is sonr. Quickly upon his return to his quarters he freezes all this mush, and packs it away for the next day's use. The few cases of poisoning that have come to the public notice are in all probability not the only ones that have occurred, for physicians say that many cases of poisoning have occurred in the districts where the hokey pokey vend ers are that could not be accounted for, because of the suddenness of death. It has generally been understood that certain establishments are putting out large quantities of hokey pokey and supplying the venders, but this is not so. The Italians and their families are the only ones who manufacture and ea ter to the consumers. A BEAR'S NOSE. On Point of th Animal Tbt la Vary Scndtlre. A sportsman's life was once saved by his knowledge of one of the physical peculiarities of the bear. Gen. Hamil ton, who tells the story in his "Sport in Southern India." was out on a bear shooting expedition with a brother officer. The beaters drove the bear from his hiding place, and a shot from the officer threw him on the ground; but he got up with a grunt and made off. As the bear passed an open bit of ground Gen. Hamilton again fired, but missed, and the beast turned upon him. When he was within a few yards the general gave him the other barrel. As this did not stop him Hamilton started to run, but tripped over a rock and fell flat on his face. The bear was upon him instantly, and the sportsman, looking over his shoulder, saw into the bear's mouth as j the brute made a grab at him. The animal caught him by the thigh and pinned him. Knowing that a bear's nose is very sensitive, Hamilton hit him several hard blows on the nose. The bear, unable to endure the pain, let go, and, before he could get hold again, Hamilton was up the hill. His companion ran up and killed the bear by a ball through his heart. But the bear's clas had laid open Hamil ton's thigh to the bone, and he was in bed for a month. "How many ponies will Hen's-Spur give for the hand of Homemade-Pie?" It was the maiden's father, the great chief Bear's-Breath, who spoke. "I have no ponies" answered the young suitor, as he stood dangling the scalp of a red-headed man, which hung from his belt. " "Ugh! Bean-Pod offers fifty dollars and a mule," said the chief, with a dis dainful waf ture of the hand. "But " pleaded the youth. - The chief turned to listen. "But I have a bicycle, and you may ride it on the Fourth of July of every leap year." - With a bound the chief clasped Hen's-Spur in his arms. "Hqmemade-Pie ia yonre," he said.- NEWS 0F THE WORLD. Ex-President Harrison is attend in g the session of the general assembly com mittee of the Presbyterian 'Cnuroh in. New York. The result of the election for the. President of Chile to succeed Jorge Mortt, so far as known, gives145 elec toral votes for Frederic Errazurez and1 137 for Vincento Reyes. Returns from three provinces not yet received will nob alter the majority of Errazurez. The Harland & Wolff and Workman, & Clarke shipbuilding shops at Belfast have been almost wiped ont by fire. The yards alone were damaged $1,600. D00. The island of Crete is again involved in a war with Turks and a general me lee is liable to break ont at any time. William Henry Smith, for- many years general manager of the Associ ated Press and a writer of national rep utation, died at Lake Forest, near Chicago. A wind and rain storm of unusual severity hit Pittsburg and three Uvea ' were lost and a large amount of prop erty destroyed. The storm was general throughout the Mississippi valley, doing damage from Pittsburg to Omaha. - Much damage was done at Cleveland by a terrific wind storm. At Beulah Park a large tabernacle was blown down. Matabele rebels are again menacing Bulnwago. Mark Twain has arrived in England from South Africa on his world girdling lecture tour. He will remain some months in England and publish another book. Sir Charles Tapper will succeed Lord Aberdeen as Governor General ef Can ada. Joseph Chamberlain, it is said, urged the claims of Canada's late Pre mier for the position. Three highwaymen entered a Telu ride. CoL, gambling house at midnight and held np fifteen men and robbed the place. ... In Benton county, Ark., Mrs. Mary Smith, wife -of a farmer,2 became alarmed at the absence of her 10-year-old daughter and started out to search for her, leaving her other children, in- -fant twins and a boy 4 years old playing: in the yard. During her absence a vic ious hog attacked the twins' and killed them. The little boy tried to drive the swine away and was fatally bitten. The International Socialistic Labor and Trade Congress adopted the' report of the Economic Industrial Commission, reaffirming the resolutions of the Paris congress of 1889. Herr Liebknecht an nounced that the congress would meet in Germany in 188a The session ended with singing "Anld Lang Syne," the " MarseiUeise," and the ."Carmagnole," and with cheers for the Socialist revo lution. 1 ' Major Jesse W. Sparks, United States Consul at Piedras Megras, Mexico, died, suddenly. James Murphy, 85 years old. and Stephen Garvey, aged 50 years, fought at Pier 25, North river, New York. During the struggle both men tumbled into the river and were drowned. At the Massachusetts Athletic Asso ciation meet on the Charles River Park track, Cambridge, Nat and Tom Butler broke the word's record of 2:03 for the nupaced tamem mile, made on the San Jose track, by doing the mile in 1:53 3-5. A high wind was blowing. The Spauish Government has deter mined to prevent, if possible, filibuster ing expeditions from leaving this, country for Cuba. To further guard against filibusters Spain is offering a re ward of $10,000 for information leading to the capture within Spanish waters, of filibustering expeditions. . A tidal wave broke on the Chinese coast in Kiang Su province and drowned 4000 people. General Perdero GallarecVlo, Gover nor of the Federal district of Mexico, has resigned and his resignation has. been accepted. He has a large fortune and desires to abandon pnbllo life and will travel in Europe. A special from Buenos Ay res saysi , Owing to the fall in the price of coffee exports from Brazil to the United States have been suspended. During the Snnday-school services of the Baptist Church at Thomasrille, Ga.. Colonel James F. Lilly, one of the best known men in the neighborhood, was shot down' and his throat cut. John T. Rnshin committed the deed, and after gazing in the face of his victim swal lowed four ounces of laudannin and ran from the scene of the murder, pursued by the men of the congregation. The murderer was captured in his home and s thought to be insane. One of the first things done by the management of the Illinois Central Railroad in assuming control of the Chesapeake, Ohio and Southwestern was to restore the cut of 10 per cenli made about three years ago by the re-! oeivers of that road in the wages of its employes.
