W. Mer ritt'8 "Jack the Ripper" and J. E. Hill's Tekip. -,Both are trotters but MciFal Ion i changing their gaits to pacing. Jack the Ripper is the acknowledged fastest horse in Southern - Oregon, but in a race he goes "to pieces" and the best drivers are unable to "level'' him down to business. 'Since putting on The ' pacing;- hobbles he; js getting squarely down to good work and it is expected he wiH- develop; a -speed of 2:18, or better. - .Tokio is .being simi larily. treated and. is showing-, a speed of a half in 1:18; a' quarter in 37, and an eighth in 17--the latter being a 2:16 gait. I wouldn't sell' you doe that . wasn't. : - One of Levi Moris' sons, of Talent, met with a very serious accident Wednesday and one which came very near causing him his life.- He had hitched a horse up to a hay rake, and had left him alone for a few .minutes until he could eo into the house. The horse became frightened and started to run and the young man ran and caught hold of the lines and be came tangled up in them in such a way that he could not extricate himself. He was dragged over a hundred yards be fore the horse was stopped and when picked up he was unconscious. . Dr. Pickel was telephoned for and imme . diately responded, but at last accounts he was still unconscious, resulting from a concussion .of , the ;. brain. -.Besides this he was seriously bruised about the body and some serious doubts were entertained as to his re covery. One hundred dollars forfeit will be paid by the proprietors of Oregon Kidney tea for each and every case of kidney or bladder 'disease which can not be cured by its proper use. Sold by Chas. Strang, druggist. The citizens of Eagle Point and surrounding country have decided to celebrate tbe coming Fourth of July in a manner befitting the glorious occa sion. Hon. J. B. Eddy, of Portland, has consented to deliver the oration and the best of music will be furnished. A long list of sports of various kinds has been provided for, meluding- horse and bicycle racing and some entirely new ' features are . promised.- - There will be a basket dinner and the - day's exercises will end with a grand ball at Pool's opera house in tbe evening. The music will be furnished by tbe Woodruff sisters' celebrated string band. The parties in charge of the - celebration are putting forth their best efforts to make tbe affair a bis success. and a grand time is promised for all who are present. Hays, he who lives over on j Antelope creek, and who arrived in this county about a year ago from In dian territory, has opened an in dustry in our valley, which has not heretofore- been especially con ducive to success because that it has not been pushed .to any great extent The industry is noth ing more nor less than the manu facture of cheese. Mr. Hays was in Med ford last week with a good bit of his product which was placed on the market. The cheese is a first-class article but it could be aught less inasmuch as Mr. Hays haa had years of experience in the business. He is only milking a few cows this season, but next year ne win aaa to tne nam ber and do a more extensive business. Reports of a terrible accident near tunnel six reached here by wire Wed nesday evening. - The aceident was- to a man named Benson and was while firing a salute to tbe "flyer" with giant powder, isotn nis arms were Diown off and one eye blown out. His body - was horribly mutilated by the explo sion, but strange to say, be survived the shock and has chances of recovery. He was working in one of Capt. Crowell and Bradsbaw, with Martin Perry as an able third, will make a team that will always be looking out for the best interests of the county. According to re ports all is not serenity among the offi cials at tbe Agency and reservation and that a change in the management is looked for in the near future. Quite a large number of people congregated on the lawn to en joy the pleasant moon light evening among tne rose gardens ana to par take of the excellent ice cream and strawberries. Tbe net proceeds for the' society were' eleven dollars. The society is. doing a splendid work and laeir eateruunmeuu) nre wwajn liberally patronized by our people. Not alone is this true of the Presby terian church society but as well of others. I am now prepared to do all kinds of gun and bicycle repairing at tbe low est possible price. Chas. Perdue. As the time for the bicycle picnic approaches the interest seems to grow and it now begins to look . like it will be-an affair of no small magnitude. Ar rangements have been made to carry the lunch baskets of bicyclists free from tbe different towns in the valley, and everything possible is being done for the oocommodation of the visitors. Lunch baskets left at the following places will be cared for and delivered at the grounds on Rogue river: Ash land, at H. L. Myers' store; Jackson ville, at Orth's butcher shop; Medford, at D. I. The table as first given .out was iucorrect according to later railroad advices and the four dollars extra has been added. This is to be regreted as several of our citizens, were preparing to tsike advantage of the first rate given out but will not pay the increase. Merchant W. B. Stevens has written to Albany to ascertain if the fare from Albany to the bay cannot be reduced enough to elimenate part of the extra charges made by the S. P. company and has hopes that it will. The central committee of the people's party met io Medford June 1.1th, to devise ways and means to set tle the affairs and campaigning ex penses of tbe recent election. Con siderable business was transacted. A contribution . was : taken up for the purpose of enabling them to distribute reform literature through the country. A resolution introduced by J. A. Wil cox, of Phoenix, to instruct the com mittee to take the necessary steps to insure the thorough organization of the party for the fall campaign was adopted. De too rest, the dentist opera block, Medford. The S. P. railroad officials have issued circulars stating that reduced fares will not be given for any distance over three hundred miles. The round trip fares for from one to one hundred and twenty-five miles will be one and -one-third, from 125 to 200 miles, one and one-fifth, and from 200 to 300 miles one fare. The reason for their refusal to grant reductions of fares for a distance over three hundred miles is not under stood, and au effort to have them re consider their determination is being made with some hope of success.
