Last Saturday, evening at 11:30 the citizens of Medford were awak ened by the alarm of fire, and on investigation, it proved that the Mr .fnm business college, situated near the distillery, was on fire. The fire boys responded gallantly,, as usual, but owing to the distance from the nearest water hydrant, they wee powerless to act. The fire started, from the explosion, from un overturned lamp in the upstairs sleeping om of. Richard Henry. Although strenuous efforts were made to smother the flames and pre vent their spreading, the whole building was Boon enveloped in a mass of seething flames, and the oc cupants barely escaped with their lives. The building' was occupied by J. 0. Goe and family, recently from Illinois, who had moved into the building u few days prior to the fire, and the young man in whose room the fire started. Mr. Henry was just preparing to retire, when his arm accidently struck a lamp on a table near by overturning it and it exploded as stated above. Mr. Henry lost everything, not even saving his clothes. The loss fails heavily upon Mr. Goe, as he had just arrived from the east and had not as yet been able to se cure employment. The building and contents were valued at $3500, on which there was an insurance of $2000. This insurance did not cover any loss on Mr. Goe's goods. A subscription was circulated by F. M. Poe, to re lieve tho immediate wants of the un fortunate family, and the citizens responded with their usual liberal ity. $15 in cash and groceries and considerable wearing apparel hav ing been secured in a short time.
