I State Printer W. H. Leeds came out from Salem Tuesday. Several of Ashland's young men are planning a trip to Cripple Creek. Clifford Frison has quit printing and taken a place in the woolen mills. Delbert Terrill, the Brownsboro e took man, was in Ashland this week. Born In Ashland, March 29, 1896, to Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Briggs, a son. Wm . Potter has opened a new feed store in the bakery building, next door to city hall. George Vaupel has a new nickel-in-the-slot machine and it is a sure thing winner for Vaupel. "Grover III," a farcial 3-act comedy, is soon to be presented by the populist of this precinct. Otis Frierson, of Table Rock, was in town this week. Otis is a crack ing good fellow and always welcome. John E. Ross, who has been tak ing in Ashland for the past week, returned to Central Point Saturday. Rev. L. L. Wood and wife, evan gelists, will commence a meeting in the Baptist church Sunday, April 12th. For about a week this month the woolen mills will be closed down. during which time an invoice will be taken. Miss Carolyne D. Roper, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Carr. of San Francisco, returned Monday on the flyer. For the last few nights we have had frosts, but experienced fruit men say that the fruit is not in jured to any great extent. Miss Titus, an experienced and competent teacher, has opened private school in Ashland with an attendance of twenty-two pupils. Joe Million is to have another operation performed on his eyes this week, alter which he will re turn home. He will be left entirely blind. The foot ball teams of north and south public schools plaved near the depot Saturday. The result was 16 to 4 in favor of the north school. .Mies llatue .Martin now sings in the Episcopal church choir. Her melodious voice adds greatly to the already good music furnished by that choir. The Salvation Army is soon to establish a corps in Ashland. They also intend to work other ppints in the valley, but will make this city their head quarters. The free-silver and gold-bug re publicans, of Ashland, do not seem to be on the best of terms. Mean while the populists wear a smile, as much as to 6ay, "just that many more votes for us." The Episcopal chuch of this city is soon to give an Experience social earn a dollar and at the social tell how it was earned. Miss Anna Carney spent a few days thi6 week with friends in Eagle I'omt. Mrs. Williams has upended her dressmaking parlors in Mr. Barn hart's house. Miss Carrie Tice, who' lives on Dry creek, visited her sister, Mag gie Tice, last Sunday. Mr. Whipple and Miss Pyburn, of Woodville, made our school a plesant visit this week. Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald spent pent Friday with Mr. Fitzgerald's brother in Sams Valley. Mrs. William Moore aud daugh ter, of Sams Valley, visited Mrs. Judge Richards Monday. Miss Ollie Marksbury has con cluded to remain at home and is clerking in the Marksbury store. Mr. Jerome Fitzgerald is being greatly troubled with a carbuncle on his face un the lower part of his cheek. A little excitement was had Wed' nesday evening. The little Marks bury boy had disappeared, and was found after much searching by everyone. Mr. Jones, of Medford, has rented one of Judges Richard,! houses and will soon move his family here. Frank Parker, while riding young horse bad his ankle badly sprained by the horse falling with him. Dr. Drake was called, and says he will soon be all right. Mr. Baker, our "man of confec- tionariee," has purchased a dwelling house of C. P. Parker in the nortu west part of town. We undersand he is soon to begin housekeeping. Mrs. John Collins, of Sams Val ley, is very ill. Dr. Drake, her physician, says there is no hope for her recovery. She has been ill but a short time about sixteen davs. Will Grieves, of Central Point, expects to go to Laalornia in about a week. He has engaged work in the mine near Squaw Lake, where his mend, Artie rool, is working. Prof L. L. Freeman has his classes organized in good working order, and is now moving smoothly on with his work. Harry Harvey, who lately came from Centra Point, began school Monday. Miss Fries and Miss Ella Benson spent Saturday and Sunday with Eagle Point frieads and took in the foot ball game, and the party in the evening j T. J. Hougham and Thos. Stan ley, who have the Braden mine leased, have crushed 52 tons of ore and sent the clean-up to the San Francisco Mint. They have not gotten their returns but expect at least $500 from the clean-up. Several Jacksonville people at tended Rev. Desmarais lecture upon the A. r. a.b at tbis place Monday evening, among them be ing John Orth, Mr. Schump and Mr. Bittengen. The latter gentle man resides at The Dalles and is visiting his daughter, Sister Al berta, who is musician at St. Mary's academy. The U, S. Gov't Reports show Royal Baking Powder superior to all others. Jacksonville Sews. Gen. T. G. Reames and K.Kubli, who have been quite ill are able to be on the streets again. E. J. Kaiser, of the Vallev Record. made a visit to Jacksonville Satur day in quest of political news. Miss Lora Coltan, of Ashland, is getting abstracts from the records for her father s office at Ashland. Next week will be a busy one at the court house. The circuit and county commissioners courts both falling on that week. W. A. Buchanan and W. W. Bretherton, two prominent railroad men, were here Monday paying taxes, but didn't tarry long. Messrs. Wm. and John Knox ar rived from San Francisco Sunday evening to look after their mining interests in the Big Applegate dis trict. Mrs. A. W. Sturgis and daughter. of Forrest creek, were the guests of Mrs. W. J. Plymale from Saturday to Monday. The child has recov ered from her injuries received by tbe kick from a horse. W. W. Cardwell and wife. Dan. Cardwell and Mrs. W. L. Bilger. who were here from Roseburg and Olympia, to attend the funeral of their mother, Mrs. Caroline Card- well, departed for their respective homes Sunday. Last Thursday news was received here announcing the death of Mrs. Caroline Cardwell, who died at the home of her son, W. W. Cardwell, at Roseburg. Not many of her ac quaintances were aware of her poor health and were surprised to hear of her death. The remains were brought to Jacksonville and in terred by the side of her late husband. A number of her pioneer friends attended the funeral. The services were conducted by Rev. W. B. Moore of the M. E. church. The residence of Wm. M. Colvig had a narrow escape from des truction by fire Monday noon. A fire was discovered in the roof near a flue and the fire company was called out The hose proved too 6bort to throw the water from the cistern to the dwelling, bo all hands turned to carrying water in buckets and succeeded in conquering the fire. A heavy wind was blowing at the time which made the work more difficult. Quite a whole was made in the roof in the effort to reach the origin of the fire. Democratic County Convention. The convention of the county democ racy which was called for March 2Sth, at Jacksonville, for the purpose of electing delegates to the forthcoming state convention at Portland was or ganized by the election of Wm Col rig temporary chairman and Cbas. Nickell temporary secretary. After the report of the credentials com mittee, the temporary organization was made permanent. The delegates elected to represent the county in the state and district convention are: W. S. Crowell. Henry Klippel, A. N. Soliss, T. G. Reames, Chas. Nickell, J. E. Pel ton. D. H. Miller, H. S. Evans. It was decided to hold the county nominating convention on April 25, and April ISth was the date fixed for the primaries. A committee of five was appointed to select a committeeman from each precinct, and the newly, appointed ceutral committee are to meet at Jack sonville on the date of the April con vention and organize by the election of an executive committee and officers.
