Lee Vincent made a flying busi ness trip to Jacksonville last Mon day. Otis Frierson took a four hoise load of oats to Central Point last week. i Mrs. Ed. Nichols was whopping in Medford and Central Point on the 9th. A. B. Hood is working early and late putting in a crop on Mr?. Drum's place. School opened Monday the 9th, with a small attendance which has gradually increased until now the yearly average is on the roll. Mr. Hansen is a very busy man these days beautifying his farm. He- has Mr. LaRue, of Central Point, pulling trees and slumps and is making general repairs. Misses May and Libbie Pendle ton attended the musical recital given by Mrs. Norcross and pupils at Central Point last Saturday They report a very pleasant enter tainment. Mr. Pendleton has been putting in a lot of irrigation .boxes on his place lately, besides putting out a ot of choice trees and shrubbery and berries from Calforma. Last week the Bybee brothers brought quite a large bunch of cattle from their Jacksonville ranch and turned them out on the south side of Table Rock. The feed will be good soon. Rev. M. Bryant, the Congrega tional minister, of Medford, was visiting ameng our people last week He decided to preaeh at our school house on Suuday the 22d at 3 p. m lhe Sunday school will be re organized on the same day. Every body cordially invited. For a long time our school yard has been in need of a front fence and as a "short horse is easy to curry etc" everybody turned out a week ago Saturday at 1 o clock p. m. and while the men were at work fixing fence, replacing the flag rope and repairing the pump, the ladies were making coffee and sandwiches, Y ben the work was done all were invited to partake of one of the nicest lunches to be had on such an occasion. Edsall is in the Butte creek country visiting his many friends ia that section. 1 Our Bchool started Monday. Mrs Peter, of Jacksonville, will train the tender branches: ,y J. A. Anderson and W. M. Smith have purchased a new spray pump and are now dealing out death to the little bugs. S. H. Sykes is re ported to be 'Contemplating a like purchase. Mrs. Katie Gallaher has received the unpleasant news of the recent burning of their store and residence property in south Seattle. -This is quite a heavy loss as there was no insurance. Fruit Commissioner Casey, of Ashland, was in this section last week and visited several neglected orchards. There is an unusual amount of spraying being, done here this season! and we trust" that it ill not only prove profitable to in dividuals but to the orohardists generally. Miss Ella Anderson was eleven years old on Wednesday ot last week. 1 here is nothing of special interest about that fact however, but when we say there was a whole house full of friends, both old and young, gathered at her home on the afternoon of the above date, it makes an item worthy of mention and your pencil pusher takes pleasure in passing it to The Mail. Out door games and plays were enjoyed by all until the merry-makers were tired. Refreshments were served and then another round of merry games were played. We' trust as the years roll on Miss Ella may en joy many more such pleasant after noons. Mrs. Stout returned from Califor nia this week. M. Healy has left Phoenix. He has gone north. Mrs. Troughton has been very sick but is improving. S. Kates and family was visiting in Phoenix Sunday. George Epps and Charles Talbot are working down at lolo. Dr. Cole and son have gone to California. A good opening for a doctor now. Uncle John Coleman had an ab- cess removed a few days ago. He getting along reasonably well. Dr. Cole attended him. B. F. Jackson and family started ast Monday evening for Idaho. He will stop in the Willamette for a short visit with his father. Mr Jackson contemplates getting a por tion of that Jves Perces reservation, near Lewiston. Additional Central Point Items. Gardening and plow sharpening is the order of the day. Mr. Gardiner and family removed to the Meadows this week. Max Mulier was a visitor on Mon day, presumably giving the politi cal 6hako. Our Nasbv has been indisposed for several days but is able to at tend to his duties again at the office Our town has entertained a num ber of visitors during the week, be ing drawn hither by the excitement caused by the stabbing affray. R. M. Callison, of Palouse City, who has been sojourning in Med ford during the winter, is in town today visiting with James Riley and family. School closed last Friday which is much regretted oy patrons. All of the teachers, or nearly all, have secured schools for the spring term elsewhere. Attorney Wm. Colvig went to Oakland, California, Saturday on legal business. Mrs. Fred Furry returned to her home at Eden after a two weeks' visit with her mother, Mrs. M. Caton. Miss Issie McCully went to Ash land Wednesday to witness the marriage of her friend, Miss Ella Drake to Mr. Geo. Calhoun, a mer chant of Grants Pass. Mrs. P. J. Ryan and son, Luke, have returned home from their trip to San Francisco, where they have Durchased a nice line of mil linery and ladies' furnishing goods. Bert Dennis, who is interested in in the Squaw Lake mines, is dis abled by rheumatism, which was caused by wearing gum boots, and has been under the care of Dr. C. Tine3 for the past week. M. Marsh was examined before Justice Dunlap Tuesday on the charge of drawing a gun on some parties, but was discharged for want of evidence, lie was hned, however, for carrying a concealed weapon. Several men are at work making the excavation for a cistern to bi made in the court house square for the protection of the court hous and other property. The county appropriated 1 100 toward the ex penses. J. C. Whip is the ' con tractor, whose bid was $229. Hon. H. B. Miller, of Eugene, addressed a large audience at th court house on Tuesday evening. The Medford and Jacksonville bands furnished music for the oc casion aud a fair portion of th crowd was composed of Medford. people. Mesdames W. M. Colvig, P. P. Prim, J. T. Kenney, L. L. Jacobs. A. The lodge was instituted under the most favorable auspices, and with the large amount of enthusiasm shown at the time and interest dis played in the general working f the order, there is no reason Man zanita lodge should not soon tak a place among the first lodges of the state. Then followed the installation cere monies and instructions in the balloting, secret work, etc. It was 1 o'clock a. m. Thursday before the lodge adjourned and none too soon as the electric lights were turned out just as the last member was leaving the hall. The visitors were highly entertained and every cour tesy shown them by the people of Ashland.
