Committees from the colonial dabs
of Chicago, New York and Boston have
started from Chicago for California to
investigate the site and plans of Ash
orst colony in Tehama county. - If their
examinations prove satisfactory they
will found the settlement and make
extensive improvements. The commit
tees were sent by the heads of 1,200
families, each of which have means.
Ten families from Chicago accompany
the committees, their intention being
to .erect houses and become the first
residents of the new town. This is the
second colony undertaken by the Na
tional Homeseekera' association.

The grain inspector of Galveston,
Tex., reports that from Oct. 12. to Jan.
29, there were exported from that port
to foreign points 2,618,007 bushels of
corn. During the present month there
have teen exported about 300,000
bushels.
Governor Mclntyre of Colorado has
issued a proclamation forbidding the
importation of cattle and horses into
that state from California, Texas, Okla
hama and all states and territories ex

The death of John Daubenbiss, which
occurred at Soqnel, Santa Cruz county,
marks a page in the history of Califor
nia that tells of the days of a pioneer of
pioneers. He came to America from
his birthplace, Bavaria, in 1835, and in
1841 crossed the plains to Oregon and to
California in 1843. His first home was
at San Jose in 1843, whence' hs removed
to Soquel in 1845. Two ysars later he
bought a farm on which hs had since
resided. Daubenbiss was in the Mexi
can war under General Fremont, and
at the raising of the American flag at
Monterey in 1848 he carried the mes
sage from Commodore Sloat to General
Sutter at Sutter's fort, Sacramento
county, announcing that fact De
ceased built the first grist mill in Cali
fornia, at Niles station, in 1845, for
General Yallejo, and the first sawmill
in the territory at Soquel in 1847.
