Medford Oregon. MINES AND MINING. Ex-senator Cameron, of this county, has purchased twenty acres of placer ground on Galice creek, in Josephine county. Alex Orme was at Ashland Tues day in quest of repairs for his stamp mill. Mr. Orme is owner and op erator of the Bertha mine, on Foots creek, which mine is being worked continually and from which there has been taken an immense amount of rich ore. "V. II. Uhoten was up from Gold Hill last Saturday. The Rhoten boys are sleuthound when on tne trail 01 a pocket and they almost always get their game. . II. reported baturday .that he had but recently located a pocket, on Kanes creek, lrom which he took 11100. The reservoir at Squaw lake was completed last week. The dam which form 8 the reservoir is twenty four feet high, 140 long and thirty wide and will back the water over 140 acres of land. Mr. S. E. Hill was foreman on this work and hi6 management of affairs has been entirely satisfactory, and to his men he is a king among them and crowned a royal good fellow. Morten Lindley, the general maiv agerofthe Lucky Bart mine, re turned rnday evening from a quite extended visit in California. Mr. Lindley stated that it was the inten tion of the owners of this mine to put a force of men at work in a short time and as soon as some pre liminary work was completed the mine would be worked to its fullest capacity. George Veit, he who formerly re sided at Talent, writes from Grants Pass 6tating that himself and J. B. Carlisle are at work opening a placer mine about seven miles from Grants Pass, and that within a week's time they expect to begin operations in earnest and for a solid winter s run and hope to gather in the shining nuggets, of which that county has an abundance. Mr. Birge, the expert miner who has been about Medford for the past several months, but who is now in New York city, is expected to soon return to the banner gold belt of the coast Jackson county Reports tell us that he has inter ested an immense amount of capi tal in our mines and that his return will be the initial step toward big mining developments. Mr. Birge is a gentleman in whose judgment there is placed much confidence by moneyed men. Very little has been written re garding the Hammersley mine for the past few months, yet, as is evident from the following from the Oregon Mining Journal, the boys are still hustling and doing good work: "The five-stamp mill on Hammersley mine has more than it can do to crush the ore from this mine, and another battery of five 6 tamps will be put in. The steam hoist is working well, and the shaft is going down steadily in gravel ore. The vein widens with depth." No accurate data, says the Oregon Mining Journal, can be had with which to solve the question as to the annual gold output of the state of Oregon. From the best data ob tainable, however, the annual out put approximates $2,000,000. The difficulty in reaching a conclusion arises from the fact that the gold is shipped out to different parts of ine country, ana Dy auiereni cnan nels. Much of it goes by express and some by mail. No data is to be had from which to ascertain the amount shipped through the post office. Again, much of the gold product of the state goes to the Shelby Smelting Company, at San Francisco, whence it ultimately reaches the mint and is credited to California. II. B. miler's Residence Burned. On Sunday, the 10th mst, tno resi dence of H. B. Miller, located 3. miles down the river from Grants Pass, was burned, a few articlos of furniture were saved, but the loss foots up about ST.000 on which there was $1500 Insurance. A spiritulist meeting was beinz held at the house when the fire occurred, and while the meeting was in progress some young people were up stairs, and shortly after their coming down the whole upperpart of the build ing was discovered in flames, and the rest of the work of destruction took but a few minutes. Mr. Miller and family have boon residing in Kgeune for some time, and the residence has since that time been occupied by Mr. Miller's father and a hired girl. War to the Knife. It is war to the knife, and the knife to the hilt between the South ern Pucific company and O. R. & is. Officials of these1 companies held a conference at San Francisco ast week with the object of arriv ing at some compromise, but it did no good and they are fighting at a great deal closer ranee than before. The meeting was no sooner ended than the O. R. & N. company announced a reduction in rates be tween Portland and San Francisco, from their former charges of $lo first class and $10 second to $10 first class and $5 second. This was announced Saturday morning and it was not long before the Southern Pacific came out with a rate of $lo first class and $10 second class, including berths between Portland and San Francisco, on the Shasta limited. Saturday evening the O. R. & N. company announced a further reduction, fixing the fare by steamer at $3 and $2.50, first and 6econd class. The rate war is having the effect of very greatly in creasing the through passenger business, and over the S. P. line it has become so great that it was necessary to send out the "flyer" leaving Portland Tuesday evenin in two sections. To Teachers and School Officers. "Id the recent adoption of textbooks for the public schools for the State ot Oregon, Heed's Word Lessons was adopted as the Speller to bo used in said schools for the next 6ix years. As said Heed's Word Lessons is of such an advance? grade as to only take the place oi Watsons Advanced Speller, and as there is nothing in such book to 6upply the place of tlementa-y Speller, the biate lioard of Education, by au thority confered upon it, has ordered that; Watson's Elementary Speller be adopted and placed for use in the public schools." The above order is made, in view of the fact that there is no elementary speller accompanying the series adopted by the vote taken Jan. I, ISS'3. Gf's Newbury, County Supt. la Probate Court. More interests center in the public school of Medford than in any one other institution so that whatever tends toward making them more useful is of interest to us all. Prof. Gregoy has a plan by which a beginning toward a library for the school may be made. He has secured the agency for the Standard dictionary for Medford and proposes to donate the agents profit on each volume sold here toward the purchase of books for the school library. This dictionary is the latest one pub lished in the English language, hav ing just been issued from the press. Some idea o? its merit 86 compared with the four best known dictionaries mav be seen from the following com parison: ' Worcester's dictionary contains 105.000 words, Webster's latest (Inter national) 125,000 words, the Century 225,000 words, while the Standard con- 000 words in the appendix. It contains the latest words introduced in litera ture, science and the arts. About 4.000 new words in the electrical field alone. This is the first book that has ever at tempted to systematize the compound ing of words. Synonyms and antonyms are freely used." Thousands of words have quotations from authors showing the page and line where the word is found. Proper attention is given to the spelling reform movement. 3000 words being spelled as recommended bv the International Spelling Reform Association. The new and valuable features of the work are many and the Professor will be pleased to call on any one and explain them luliy. inoeo not provided with a good dictionary Will QO wen W examme mis une avuu do so early as the price will be ad vanced several dollars on January 1st, 1S95. Mavor Haskins has agreed to see that the agents profits are properly placed to the credit of the library fund. Among the Churches. EPISCOPAL CHUSCH Rev. As we garner the harvests of plenty and hear the jingle of gold realized from the sale of the surplus we naturally feel like buying something, not only something that is a beauty but of last ing good. We feel that the good house wife has helped us to gather those gold coins, and we know that there is nothing we. could present her with that would bring more joy than a fine dinner or tea set. Those golden Green Thistle sots at Wolters are positively the very finest ever brought to Med ford and they are being sold at a fig ure that is 'way down considering the quality and beauty. ..
