COSSIWG SOON! The cheapest goods ever brought to this city are coming from C. B. Rouse's great mansion in New York City, and all selected by G. L. Webb himself, who knows what a bargain is when he sees it. i.i iftfil T y m rrwT v,.l n u;u prices for hosiery when can get it s6 cheap. on will be surprised to learn that we will have hosiery cheaper than ever. In the meantime some lines are going at cost to make room for new THE RACKET r 1 NEWS OF THE CITY. ft- Last week we stated that Dr. B. F. Adkitis and Mrs. Denmson were soon to erect a brick block on the south side of Seventh street. We were not quite positive as the accuracy of the item when we wrote it, but we ventured one chance at a guess and we guessed it the first time, only it will bo Dr. Adkins and Spencer Childers, Jr., who will put up the block. On Monday of this week Mr. Childers made a pur chase of one of the lot of Mrs. Dennison and at once began figuring with Mr. Adkins on the combination building and in less than a few hours the deal was closed and a few hours later men were at work in the quarry getting out rock for the foundation . Work of ex cavating the trenches has been com menced and the work entire is to be pushed as rapidly as possible. The building is to be 50x134 feet in size and two stories high. Mr. Childers will build both his own and Dr. Adkins? building furnish all the material and do all the work. The Childers' lower storeroom has been leased to the Law ton boys. J. vV. will occupy one half of the front while D. T., or rather, Mitchell, Lewis and Staver company, will occupy the other half of the front aad all the rear. Dr. Adkins' room has not been rented as yet, but there are already several applicants 10- it. The rock for the foundation is being gotten out on J. V. Lawton's Griffin creek farm, upon which there is an almost inexhaustible quarry of- splendid building rock and very handy to gel at. The erection of this brick building closes. up another solid block of build ings fronting on one of our principal streets, and all of the buildings are two stories high while some of them are three. Now if the same spirit will get possession of property owners on the opposite side-of the street there will be bricks an equal to which a cluster of will be difficult to find in any land. There are many good reasons why you should use One Minute cousb cure There are no reason why you should not, if in need of help. The only harmless remedy that produces immediate result. Geo. H. Haskins, di uggis. A second meeting of the Medford Wazamas was held at city council halls on Monday evening of this week. There was a goodly number of mem bers present and a right lively session was had. Prof. G. A. Gregory was chosen president, Dr. K. B. Picket, vice president, George Bogers secre tary and Miss Clara Skeel treasurer. The title given the organization w:is '"The Medford Crater Lake Society." There was quite a heated contest o-er the date upon which theelection of offi cers should occur, but as the discussion and contest were of a friendly nature and in reality only originated for the purpose of affording a little pleasant diversion there was nothing said or done which could have originated from motives of malice or ill feeling. After the election of officers, and minor other points had been settled u;wn the society adjourned each one determined to maKe it his or her personal duty to let not an opportunity ro by which would tend to the successful arrange ment of a grand reception for our Ma zania friends should they decide to jnake Crater lake the scene of their next year's encampment and to use all efforts possible in setting forth the advantages resultant from the visitors deoarture for the. lake from this point. The president having been empowered at this meeting to apoint an executive committee announced Tuesday evening that be had appointed as such com-; mittte Messrs. AJ S. Blilou, Post master.1. S. Howard, J. W. Lawton and Misses Delia Pickel and Jessie Worman the president and secretary, by the motion were made ex-officio members of this committee. The membership fees were placed at twenty five cents for ladies and lifty cents for gentlemen. :' Kverybody is eligible to become members. The date of elec tion of officers was fixed for'fhe third Monday in September of each year. Agents wanted, to canvass for "Sil ver aiid Gold," or "Both sides of the Mouey Shield." Hendershot, was recieved at this office last week after we had gone to press. Mr." Hendershol's death occurred on Monday ,-September 23rd, of strangulat ed hernia, and after only one day's illness. Funeral services were con ducted the following day by Itev. Down ing, of Central Point, and interment was made in the Rock Point cemetery. Mr. Hendershot formerly lived east of Medford and only a couple of years ago he purchased a small farm near Bolt upon which he resided at the time of hisdeath. He was a brother of Mrs. H. A. Morey, of this city, and of Mrs. .1. W. Short, of Bott. He leaves a wife and six children, the oldest being but eleven years -of age. Mrs. Bonder shot's Relatives the Xettleton's live near Kugeno. Palm has just received another large invoice of millinery, and has now the best selected stock in Southern Oregon. Call on M rs. Palm for millinerv Wo neglected to chronicle last week a slight conflagration which oc curred at the residence of M. S. Damon. It was during the dark hours of Thurs day night thnt Mrs. Damon mistook the sound sleep of her husband for an illness with which he is sometimes af flicted. and called to Ulysses who was sleeping up stairs to go for a physi cian. Ulysses hastily arose, lighted a lamp, dressed and started up town. When only a short distance from the house Mrs. Damon's persistent efforts to awaken her husband were successful and she called to Ulysses to return. A few minutes later a crackling noise was heard upstairs and upon investiga tion it wa found that a stand end a part of one partition were on fire. Quick work soon smothered the Dames, but not until considerable damage had been done. It is supposed that in his haste Ulysses dropped the match with which he lighted the lamp on the stand cover. Mrs. G. L. Webb wants to see you, at "The Racket." We will give 10 per cent reduction on every dollar's worth of goods, (except school supplies and "special sales') until the new goods bejrin to arrive from New York. The vigerous blowing of the mill whistle, together with-.tbe ringing of the fire bell, at Friday noon, called a large majority of our citizens from their dinners to assist in extinguishing a tire which bad gained considerable headway upon the roof of Chas. Mil ton's blacksmith shop, on Ninth street, between C and D. Taylor Payne drove to the engine house and hooked onto the hose cart and the way that bay leara made the dust fly was a caution. A line of hose was laid and tbo tire extinguished and the hose reeled in ten minuter after the alarm was given. The damage was not very heavy, but the entire roof will have to bu replaced with a new one. Some of the tools were damaged considerable. Mr. Mil ton was at dinner at the time, and can not account for the fire. It seems that the tire originated on the work bench in the corner of the shop and about eight feet from the fOrse. The customer must buy where he can get the cheapest. That is why G. L. Webb goes to New York. The one that buys the cheapest can sell cheap est . "' Hotel Nash is doing a splendid business these times, the rooms being nearly all occupied every night and sometimes there are not enough, of them to meet the demand. There was, in years agone, a cry that tho com mercial travelers would not stop in Medford over Sunday because of our poor hotel accommodations.
