Medford Oregon.
Last week we mentioned tho organi
zation of a Ma.ania club in Medford,
but we did not go into details as to
who the Mazamas are and what their
purpose is.
The Mazauiais a mountain coat, but
those of that name with which we have
to deal at this time aro not goats, but
being mountain climbers tliey have
taken the mountain climbing goat's
name. Tho objects of tho club aro
various. Prominent among them, as
we understand, are to make famous,
tho world over, tho Cascade mountain
range, and upon this occasion more
particularly one of tho greatest won
ders of the world Crater lake to
have a summer outing, a good time
and seo tho greatest 6cenery the whole
coast affords.
Il is expected that from 500 to 10(H)
people will join the club at points in
Washington and Northern Oregon and
visit the lake in a body. At the lake,
when all have congregated, a few
week's session of various amusements
and business will be had. These peo
ple will require hotel accommodations
at th point where they leave the rail
road aud team hire to carry their
camping outfits and themselves' to the
lake.
Some time ago mention was made in
The Mail of a letter addressed to
Postmaster Howard, signed bv W. G.
Steel, presldeut of the "Mazamas,"' of
Portland, making inquiries regarding
tho feasibility of the Mazaraa club
visiting Crater Kike next summer. Mr
Steel closes his letter by saying that if
thought advisable he would come to
Medford and look the grounds over.
Accordingly Mr. 5tol came to Med
ford: he passed right on, however, and
stopped at Ashland, where he succeed
ed in organizing a Crater lake club.
He was met by Mr. Howard, of this
city, iu Ashland and by him induced to
stop in Medford and talk the matter
over with our people. As a result of
his visit a elub was organized in this
city, aud Mr. Steel seemed well pleased
with the outlook.
e notice that the Ashland papers
in noting the organization of a club m
that citv give out that Ashland is
"plainlv the Kint of departure for th
lake." '
In view of the fact that these iK-opl
j will in all probability visit Crater lake
the coining iutnmer, few figures re
J yarding the liest "point of departure
for the lake.' will be of interest. In
j the higinning let us quote Mr. Steel's
ow language from his report of
'Crater lake, in "Ilesourees of Southern
Oregon." published by the Southern
; Oregon State Board of Agriculture,
j In locating Crater lake Mr. Steel says.
It is situated in the northwest portion of
Klamath county. Orrfc-on. twenty-two miles
wrM of Kurt Klamath, and altoul eighty miles
northpaM ot Medford. which Is the hrst point lo
leave the Orvcon Si California railroad. The
Jacksonrille and Fort Klamath military
roaJ parses the lake within throe miles, and
the road to the very walls of it is an exception
ally good one for a mountainous country."
The abovr statement was made ly Mr. Steel in
his reiMvts of the soundtiiKs of the lake
made by himself and a numoer ot other during
the -uu;airr of lvi. j
The distance to ("raler lake frxttu Ashland hy
the tead Indlnn road is about liw miles. The
d:-tnce by Fori Klamath is as follows: Ah
land to Klamath hails, IK miles: Klamath Fall
lo Fort Kiamath.ST miles: l-'ort Klamath to
Crater lake road. 21 miles: frum there to the
lake it is about two miles, maku.c a total of i'Si
miles. The exact distance from the court
house in Jacksonville to Crater hike IsTS miles,
and from Medford il is four miles nearer. Pros
peel postortlce is wllhin twenty mile.- of the
lake and the entire rountry on this side of the
mountain Is settled lo wllhin dfteen miles of
the lake.
The scenery alon the toate from Medford
cuunot be excelled for grandeur. The road
follows Kogue river for a lone diklMce. Flounce
rock, one of the many wonder OMrture. is
passed early in the I rip. Tho faaMttt RoUe
river falls. Castle creek caujaa, wllk HsJ woo
derous lowering rock. tnlm pM
timber belt are all on UiierOote. TwStactlllti s
for camping are unsTyfwd. A'tt fti'h
Il is hardly probable that M 'm-. JPX: people
wishing to vlsll Crater lake would eafo to tra
vel the extra distauee from Ashlond to Med
ford even should they choose the Itogue river
route.
There is no reason why Ashland should be a
preferable place of departure, even If distance
should cut no tisure at all. And. as far as dis
tance to the lukc goes. Ashland has no show
for argument whatever.
It has been suggested that perhaps these
tourists would like to gu to the lake one way
and return Uie other. This might be their idea
and it would perhaps be a good one. but when
Medford is given the cold shake altogether and
Ashland designated as TH K point of departure,
this paper, in Justice to its townspeople, enters
a protest.

The fourth annual encamninent of
the Old Soldiers and Sailors, at Ash
land, last week was indeed one of the
best ever held in this end of tho state.
Tho old vets all report a good time.
Ashland was again chosen as the
place for holding the reunion noxtyear.
M. S. Damon, of this city, was chosen
commander of the reunion associates
for tho coming year.
Henry Vogen, W. K. Davis and P.
Easter composed the battery who made
tho old cannon roar.
Mrs. W. K. Davis, of Medford. was
chosen quartermaster for the coming
year. This is the first lime such honors
have been bestowed upon a lady.
Miss Ethel Gregory, of Ashland, fired
the sunset gun on Thursday evening.
It is not every young lady who has the
ncrvn to shoot a full grown cannon.
There were fifty tents at the grounds
and they made quite a unique city.
The tents were all filled to their fullest
fullness and soldiers still kicking for
admission.

Every memlr of the Independent Order of
Odd Fellows, except those of Northern Light
lodge. Fargo. North Dakota, rejolood when they
read in the telegrams of the dally papers the
following report of the Sovereign Grand Lodge:
The Fargo affair, which was one of the most
imjiortunt questions of the sessions, came up
and was settled. The committee to which the
matter was referred, reported that all of the
representations of the grand sire on the Fargo
Dlltlcully were unhesitatingly endorsed. The
committee also considered the report of the
speriul comraltloe of this body made last year
und fully endorsed all of the report as being
clear. Il whs made clear that the items of WM),
jssrio and S737.B1 were not used or required for
legitimate expense and the relief of destitute
j brothers und sisters, and the total amount of
I Sll.0.C.at was ordered returned to the lodges In
the different slates from which il was received.
The above affair had lis origin about two
I years ago when the big fire occurred in that
: city and the odd Fellows' hall was .burned, to
. getber with many Odd Fellows' homes. At
I that time Northern Light lodge made an appeal
1 to other lodges of the United Stales for assist
ance fr their destitute members. A ready re
sponse followed and In a rery short time they
had an accumulated sum of money equal to
S14.000. Some of this was given lo the destitute
brothers, tor whom it was asked, but a greater
part of il was spent in the commencement of a
large Odd Fellows' temple in that city, which
was in direct violation to the sense of the ap
peal. Had iMs money been used (or the par
pose for which it was asked there would not
have been a murmur of complaint, bat the mis
appropriation of the funds, placed the order la
a position which the Sovereign Grand Lodge
could not sustain and be true to the teachings
of Odd Fellowship. The Medford lodges Sub
ordinate and Rebkah contributed t5 to the
fund.
A Pleasant Surprise.
Last Saturday Mr. and Mrs. J. W.
Bonar, the boys, Misses May Earhart,
Helen and Jennie Churchman, Messrs.
John and George Churchman took
their lunch baskets and climbed Rozy
Ann. It was a beautiful day, and from
the top of the mountain one could ob
tain a grand view of the whole sur
rounding country. After doing jus
tice to the lunch baskets, they started
home early in the afternoon. As Mr.
and Mrs. Bonar neared their home they
saw the doors wid open the doors
which thev had locked so securelv a few
I hours before. A little nearer and
I they saw the house had been taken
1 possession of by their neighbors and
j friends, who had dinner all ready for
them. The tables fairly groaned with
I -rood things. The picknickers did
! justice to a second dinner, and some to
even a tnird one. out ttial was not nail
so bad as the gentleman carrying half
a chicken home in his coat pocket, as
one of the good neighbors was known
to do. They all spent he afternoon
in croquet, etc.. going home in the
evening feeling that they each had had
a very pleasant day. X. X. X.
