MS OF THE CITY. Little Paragraphs and Big Paragraphs Penciled and Published for the People's Perusal. The Doings of the Busiest City In the Rogue River Valley All the News Once a Week. Not until this spring has the lady bus: been brought into use in this val ley as a destroyer of fruit pests, partic ularly the San" Jose scale, which insect the bugs devour upon sight and very soon entirely exterminate the pest. There are a great many species of lady bugs, any of which are quite etlicacious inthe destruction of fruit pests, but these which Capt. V. S. Crowell has recently put to work in nis orcnara are the Australian Twice Subbed lady bug (chilocorus biderluerus) and aro said to be better scale destroyers than any of the others. Capt. Crowell received two colonies, twelve bugs in each colony, from the Oregon State Horti cultural society last week, and tion thei arrival here they were at once taken to the Captain's Mt. Sunset ranch, near Jacksonville, and one eolo . ney was turned loose on a tree in his orchard and the other on a tree in his neighbor's orchard. No sooner were the bugs given their freedom than did they begin a search for scale. Mr. Crowell has taken unusually good care of his orchard and very little of the scale are to be found, but the bugs soon located what there was on this particu lar tree and at once consumed it. When one tree is cleaned they will move to the next one and so on as lonff as trees and scale is to be found. Much interest is being manifest in the work of the bugs and if it will prove as effectual as it did in California, we will all wel come their advent and will sound words of praise for those who have made it possible to procure them. The agricultural board secured them in California and that body is scatter ing them in small numbers, and if the climatic conditions are favorable to their existance. there is little doubt but the state will in a few years be well supplied with them, as they multiply very rapidly. When looking for a spring and summer hat or bonnet don't forget to call on Mrs. C. W. Palm, headquarters for fashionable millinery, where you will always find a large and complete assortment of trim ted goods at from 35 to 50 per cent less than any other place in the vallev. Last fall a carload of dried fruit was made up among the farmers, up Phoenix way. and through the agency of Page & "sou, of Portland, the car was consigned to Robt. Henderson & Son, one of the oldest and largest rirms of commercial brokers in New York city. The carload was made up of small amounts of fruits the same being the odds and ends left over from other larger shipments. Last week J. H. Stewart, who had matters of gathering the fruits for shipment in charge, received a letter from Page & Son in which was a draft for !H0, that being the proceeds received frotu the sate of the fruit.. This was not a large amount of money, neither does it represent a high price for the article sold, yet considering the fact that it was a mixed lot it was not so bail. Henderson & Son. iu their correspon dence with Page & Son have this to say regarding Oregon prunes: "You seem to have great faith in Italian prunes.. We think that the best busi ness will be done in a medium sized prune one that can be sold at a low price. The Italian prunes sold fairly well this season, because California and French large sizes were scarce and high, but next season they might be more plentiful, and the Italian prune will not sell well unless cheap, as they are inferior in quality to others, and are apt to turn gray. Prunes to sell well must be bright and black . We have more faith in the Oregon French prunes, like those you sent us. We think they are as fine as any we have seen, and you would do well to lookout for them as they are good sellers." In connection with this transaction we desire to say that the shippers of the fruit are well satisfied wit h the manner in which it was handled by lJage A Son. Miss Jane Hibbard will give les sons on violin or piano or organ, at her home or home of pupils. Miss Hibbard is proficient as an instructor, which may be proven by a few trial lessons. Last Saturday was the day set to buiid that dwelling house for Mrs. Lourie and it was built according to program. There were twelve or fifteen carpenters and other workmen present with sleeves rolled up. and the lumber was formed into the shape and general design of a 12x1 t one story houso in a space of time almost too swift to make reeord of. The men folk worked with st will most commendable, and the ladies did themselves equally as proud in preparing a sumptuous picnic din tier, ot which about fifty people par took. By the time the sun began its work of preparing for a night's lvst the house was completed, Mrs. Laurie's household effects moved thfvlo and the lady prepared her evening meal in her own home and a happier old lady it would be difficult to find. The lum ber and hardware was a donation from the citizens of the city, the work of construction by the several carpenters, and the dinner by the good ladies from various parts of the city. If there is a more charitable people on the face of this green earth than those of Med ford we have failed to hear reports from them . Our patrons will lind Dc Witt's Little Early Risers a safe and reliable remedy for constipation, dyspepsia and liver complaints. Geo. H. Haskins, druggist. A dancing party was given in Woolf's hall last Friday evening and aside from having a pretty good time in amusement terpsichore there was a voting contest which occasioned much excitement. A large and beauti fully decorated cake, made by Frank Wilson, the baker, was brought into the ball room and there to be given to the handsomest lady, present to be decided by vote of those in attendance. The contestants were Mrs. C. C. Haynes, Miss Bertie Jones and Miss Amy Wilson.' Mrs. Haynes received 24 votes, Miss Jones 7, Miss Wilson 5. Mrs. Haynes awarded the prize. A prize was also voted to the homeliest man, and Bert Childers took away the laurels and the pie. This last instance is one where beauty was nt a disad vantage. If you see "Studebaker printed on tho box, that wagon is all right. J. A. Whitman, Medford, sells Studebaker wagons, carriages, hacks and surreys. The Public School band was out Thursday evening of last week and rendered" several very lino musical selections. The boys do simply im mense. They are every one of them musicians anil they handle their instru ments, not like unto old-timers, or barnstormers, but instead very like students who have tho r.ntural ability to execute and who have had training in lino with the idea that music is not made up simply ot noise and a bunging together or jumbled notes, but of har mony, clear und distinct sounding of inch note, and the whole number of instruments to play as a unit. For a brief period of time last Sat urday things were highly exciting in the alleyway between Sixth and Sev enth streets. S. Childers' team ran away with Will Crain and Frank Green, and the horses scattered Green and Crain quite a plenty by the road side and came to a grand finish by scattering themselves, one on either side of a 'board fence back of Priteh ard's jewelry store. Crain escaped without injur not even a rosebush hit him, but Green Is nursing a bruised hand and arm. The horses are all right but the wagon was somewhat disfigured. Dr. Picket is quite at home on cherry culture, and he has grown trees of several varieties, all of which aro loaded full to the limbs' tips with blooms and bear indications of a boun tiful crop. So beautiful and promising are the trees that the doctor has had Tyler & Miser make photographs of them which, by-t he-way, is a good move, and one which ought to be more general. Pictures like these make ex cellent newspaper cuts and the printers are looking for just such evidence of the good things enjoyed by Southern Oregon people.
