NEWS OF THE CITY. Little Paragraphs and Big Paragraphs Penciled and Published for the -People's Perusal. The Doings of the Busiest City In the Rogue River Valley AH the News Once a Week. Notices have been posted about the city by Sehool Clerk Jones which announces that a meeting of the tax payers of Medford sehool district will bo held at the public school building' to-morrow, Saturday, at 1 o'clock p. m. The object, of this meeting' is to ask the lax payers to authorize the directors to borrow money- with which to fund the present indebtedness of the district. A meeting' was called some time about the lirst of November for this same purpose, but as there was little interest manifested and only a few in attendance the matter was not taken up at that time. The situation as it now stands is told in a very few words. The present indebtedness of the school district is SS.iiOO. Upon this amount we are paying 30 per cent interest, or $S50 per year. The school directors have learned where they can place the loan at 8 per cent which will lessen the amount of interest just $170 each year. This is quite an item, and as we are always anxious to save every cent possible to our school fund, would it not be good financiering to attend this meeting and authorize the directors to borrow the money for the purpose above mentioned? At any ' rate, let us attend the meeting and learn more of the proposition that the directors have to present to us. K. of P., of this city, will doubt for a moment but that the one they now have advertised for Christmas eve will fall short of those of previous dates. Instead of this one being less a success it is promised to be one of even greater enjoyment. The committee which has the affairs of arrangemeut in charge are J. A. Whitman, U. O. Damon aud I. M. Muller, and these gentlemen, with assistance of the entire lodge are entering into the details of the affair like war horses and are bent upon reaching the uppermost top round of success. Music is to be furnished by the Jacksonville orchestra, which is a guarantee that nothing but the very best in that line will be administered. Supper will be served at Hotel Med ford. at which place, under the man agement of Hamilton & Legate, noth ing but the very best of everything in the line of edibles is set out to those who go there to partake. A special free train -vill run from Jack sonville to Medford and return upon the evening of the party. Tickets for the ball will be $2 each and will en title holder to supper for two. Honey, honey! We sold overM200 pounds of honey in November. Have a few cases left. "Lumsden & Berlin. Mrs. Pickel. mother of our es teemed citizen, Dr. E. B. Pickel. met with quite a serious mishap last Satur day morning, which, owing to her age. seventy-seven years, makes the acci dent much more severe than would otherwise have been. She had stepped out onto the sidewalk when she slipped and fell to the ground fracturing the bone of one of her-limbs. She was kindly cared for until the doctor re turned from Evans creek when he re duced the fracture. She is reating very easily now, but it will be some time be fore "the- fractured parts shall have knit together. While we are writing of the acidents of this household we might mention that the doctor him self has a limp in his walk thift is not a natural one, but which is occasioned by his stepping upon a rusty nail which penetrated to quite a depth into the bottom ot his foot. Soon after the accident, which was last week, the doctor proceeded to commit surgery upon himself by cutting the wound open to the bone, after which he gave it a thorough washing with carbolic acid to prevent disease germs of the family lockjaw getting in their deadly work. Bamboo goods make as pretty Christmas presents as anythiogonecan think of. They are not only articles of beauty but they are useful as well and will give good seryice a constant re minder of the giver. I have them, I. A. Webb, Medford. There is all manner of railroad ex tension news floating about, but noth ing authentic can be gathered as to the intentions of the company. There is some speculation as to whether the extension will extend from Medford or will branch off a little ways out of Jacksonville and cross the S. P. at Central Point. The point to which it will be extended is also one of con jecture. Some of the pretentions knowing ones say Eagle Point, others Sams Valley, while still others don't know where and don't seem to care very much so long as it goes some place. As soon as anything like au thentic news is to be had we will give it out to our readers. Santa Claus has left half a car load of holiday goods at G. L. Webb's Racket store. Come and see them. Largest and cheapest stock ever brought to Medford. Charity to the fellow man is the groundwork to much that is good and noble in this world of ours. There are no more charitable people to be found any place than right here in Medford. To proyo the assertion let us state that a committee, composed of Mesdames D. T. Lawton, J. H. Whitman, H. L. Gilkey and E. W. Carder, appointed to solid subscrip tions for the needy of this city were successful in raising S15 in cash and provisions which, with the assistance of Rev. Craven, they distributed among the needy as a Thanksgiving donation. The good people of the M. E. church never forget their pastor and h'is family. They believe in - doing as well as prayiiig. For Thanksgiving they sent to the parsonage one lino turkey, one chickep, one sack of A. A. Davis' best Hour, two one-halt gallon cans of eantietl peaches, sugar, coffee, raisins, four pounds butter, apples, etc. Rev. Craven don't lioed to say thanks, brethern and friends, for you all know his happy humor and greatfnl heart. Go hear him preach. He says he would write over; the church door, "He that hath no money, come." A $50 set of books for nothing isn't bad to take. Every tira9 you buy 50 cents' worth' of goods at the I. X. L. store you get a chance to own one. Out door flowers are rare in winter time even in this sunny clime, but a very largo and beautiful bouquet of chrysanthemums from Mrs. J. H. Whitman, and presented to this ofiiee, would seem to indicate that the Rogue river valley was : out-rivaling itself. Thanks are extened to the good lady, accompanied by the wish Unit our gentle Southern Otvgon sunshine may temper the breeze to the tender out door flowers and that bouqets may grow in profusion about her home. Delivery grounds north of Jackson County Bank, The fireman's dance given at Jacksonvile Thanksgiving eveniug was a complete success. In view of the liberal patronage "from Medford it is quite reasonable to presume that the young people of the county seat will return the compliment by attend ing the K. of P. ball at this place Christmas eve.- Yucca root toilet soap best made for the complexion. Highest award at midwinter fair. Haskins, the druggist. All credit is due the Medford Electric Company because of their en deavor to accommodate to the greatest possible extent. The electric lights are now turned on at about a quarter past four, or earlier if the day be cloudy and they are needed. There is no dodging the fact that Messrs. Baird & Stratum are gentlemen of enter prise and push and a-e not only a credit to our community personally, but their business is appreciated on a!l corners. For Christinas candy give Smith's Candy Palace a call and see his stock before purchasing. All. improvements, whether about the residence or place of business, tend to point to the general success of he who ownes the property. Noticeable among the improvements this week is the new coat of paint but recently ap plied to the resilience of Tailor Fetsch. Mr. Fetsch has proven himself a worthy representative of his business and is having a good run of work all of which bolster up the oft written quotation that merit will win. The two and a half-year-old on of Henry Lyon died at Phoenix last Wednesday revening week of cholera infantum. The family had arrived from Union. Oregon, upon the day that the child died, in fact it wns quite ill on the way. These eopl while they are but strangers to the good citizens of Phoenix, they aro the receipients of many kind offerings of frendship in their present grief. Mrs. C. W. Palm has just received another large stock of fall and winter millinery which is being sold at prices lower than ever before. Mr. Redden reports that a second unsuccessful operation was jerfortned upon his daughter. Miss Estella, at the Portland hospital last Saturday. The young lady is recovering from the operation very nicely and as soon as her condition will permit another un dertaking will be made, when ether means will be restored to, and from which operation it is expected and hoped there will be better results. A gentleman . in from tho Lake creek country relates that a couple of fellows up that way had a very pleas ant (?) time on Thanksgiving day.- An altercation arose between them and when the referee had called time one of the participants was shy a couple of fingers and tho other a nose, these same dismembered parts of the human anatomy having been served by tho teeth of his advasary . Those Rex brand hams at Lumsden & Berlin's are very nice. Also dry salt pork. The Wizard Oil company is head ed this way. The company gives an entertainment each evening during its stav in a town and. during the daytime advertises extensively Wizard Oil. The nature of the entertainment we do not know, but usually an admission of fifteen cents or two hits is charged. Call and examine that invincible lino of neck wear at Mullor's. Entertained Their Friends. A. P. Bradbury is a traveling sales man for the Oregon Cracker companv. of Portland. He is a very fine gentle man and a personal friend of Mr. G. W. Galloway and family of this city. He was a visitor to Medford upon Thanksgiving iay and it was upon that same dale, that Mr. Galloway's people decided to give the gentleman a receptior, at their very suacious and pleasant resilience, corner' B and Sixth streets. Invitations were sent out and as n result at evening lime the rooms of this pleasant hom :: w.;re ) U leu with about thirty happy visitors. The evening was most 'pleasantly passed in card playing and social chat. A splendid luncheon was served, after .vliich ayenenil round of converse a id much sociability was indulged in until the hour of parting came, which was too soon when all dispersed glad to have been a party to ilie pleasant evening's enjoyment. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sutter, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Steveus. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Theiss. Attorney and Mrs. G. W. White. Prof, aud Mrs. X. L. Narregan, At torney and Mrs. W. I.
