are lively and cheerful; small game. In
the bills; plenty of blackberries', large
and luscious; the mountain brooks well
filled with trout; the weather not oo
sufferable hot or smoky, all of which
is fully appreciated by the campers and
your correspondent. Social evening
parties are often held around the camp
fires, or in the parlors of the family

The Olwelt Fruit Farm.
Written for The Medeohu M ail.
The writer recently visited1 the
orchard of Mr. P. V. 01 well, at
Central Point, and our expectations
were fully realized in finding it to
be-the best young orchard in the
valley. It is one-half mile square,
containing one hundred and sixty
acres. The trees are principally
the best varieties of winter ancles.
There are twelve thousand apple
tree, about two- thousand pear
trees,, three hundred peach trees,
and about four hundred prune
trees. Before Mr. Olwell purchased
and set this farm out to fruit, it was
known as one of the best train
fkrms of the- valley and some of the
wiseacres (?) even now, in talking
of this beautiful young orchard,
suggest that the land would pay
better, considering the expense of
taking care of the orchard, etc., if
it was still in grain. To those we
would simply say, you don't knew
what you are talking nlont. While
some of these- people talk thus and
raise fifty cent wheat and nine out
of every ten getting poor, Mr. 01
well will raise fifty cent apples and
get rich. Now we do- not contend
for a minute that everybody could
get rich raising fruit. On the other
hand, we believe there are few men
who will make thorough success
raising fruit, and we believe as
thecsre-ef the orchard will bear us
out that Mr. Olwell is one of the
few who through careful attention
and persistence will make a success
of fruit raisin e. He evidently be
lieves in the old maxim which
savs: 1 he one sure, safe, service
able, attainable quality, is that of
attention. It will grow in any soil
and in its owVi due time bring forth
good fruit." As his orchard is com
ing into bearing'. Mr. OiweM has
provided facility for taking care of
a part of a crop in the years to come,
he having secured an Oregon dryer.
which is esed almost exclusively in
the Willamette valley and through
out Waskincton. As Mr. Olwell
will not have enough fruit to run
the drier to- its full capacity this
season, it will be run on a custom
basis. Mr. A. P. Gordon wsil have
charge of the dryer this season. He
will buy fruit, and also dry for a
share. In a few years Mr. Olwell
expects to have a switch run to the
edge of the orchard where he will
load and ship by the car load.

PUBLIC SCHOOL. DEPARTMENT.
CONDUCTED. UX. HL. L. NARREOAN.
The public schools will opjn Monday,
Sept. lithywitliN. L. Narregan, prin
eipul;, N... A. Jacobs, , vice principal;
Dolla. J-Ptckel, fifth and sixth grades;
Katie Robb, fourth grade; Ellen Bur
cell, third grade; Abbie E. St. Clair,
second grade; Annie M. Nichols, first
grade. The school board has taken
much care in selecting the teachers for
the lower grades, having had a large
number to select from, thus giving the
best of instruction in every department
and improving the general work of the
school. We believe we can. offer to our
patrons as good school advantages as
are given any where in the slate. If
you live outside of the districtaud wish
to give your children. belter advautages
visit the principal of the schools and
see the work done by the pupils, this
will show you better than we can write
or tell of the work done in the schools.
The public schools are most emphatic
ally a place of business where pupils
aud.' teachers work and attend' to busi
ness from 9 a. m. till 4 p. m., and this
discipline is of as much value iu prac
tical life as book knowledge. Our
high school courso is the same as the
English courso of the Portland high
school. Normal and training class
throughout the year for those who
wish to fit themselves for touch in
Business course of penmanship, book
keeping, commercial law, commercial
arithmetic and short hand. The busi
ness course requires oue year's work
to entitle students to a diploma. Tu
ition in hIL departments $ pt-r term of
three morahs. The principal and vied
principal will be at the school building
on Saturday, Sept, tilh, to examine all
who were absent from the closing ex
aminations and those coming from
other schools, and assign them to their
grades aud classes, and to give infor
mation to any one iu school matters.
The teachers are requested to- meet the
principal at 2 o'clock on. that day. We
have had good schools for I ho oust two
years and much of our success is due to
the hearty cooperation and sympathy
ot pupils and citizens in our work and
with your coiUinujd aid we shall strive
with renewed energy and faith to do
better work and lo rewarded by the
approval of a geucrous community.
Remember that the schools belong to
the-people and it is their duly to see
and know that they are the best possi
ble. There is but oue wav to know
this and that is to visit them early and
often. Don't lake anybody's- word for
it but know for yourself th kind of
instruction and discipline your future
citizens are receiving. You are always
welcome, and don's tell us wheu you are
coming.
SINKS AND VISLW.
Robt. Swsnden and Chas. Louis,
of Gold Hill, were in MedforJ last
week on business. These gentle
men, together with ilhain
Bird-'
sey, have leased of Dr. Bradden, in
the Blackwcll district, the south !
and east end of the Braden mine
and have commenced perations by
sinking a shaft. They are down
about eighteen or twenty feet and
have about ten ton's of very rich
ore on the dump.
II. B. Martin, residing in the
Willow Springs district lias bonded
his mine together with his farm of
120 acres of land to a Mr. Chap
man for $5000 for sixty days.
Mr. Chapman is the gentleman
from New Mexico who has bonded
so much of the land in that lacalky.
Tills last deal closes- no all' the
mineral lands betwreea Young's
flats and. Gold Hill, embracing from
12000 to 15000 acres and all
bonded to this man Chapman.
The lucky Jack Morris, of Black
well Hill, discovered a vein of
quartz recently, so says the report,
which is half gold. In the face of
this authenticated report, there are
still some who talk of this country
having been prospected. A few tin
horn prospectors who came here
with the expectation of finding gold
ripening on the mania nit a bush,
gave the country a. black eye
when their expectations were not re
alized, but the men who find gold
are those who have the energy and
perseverencc to keep digging away
until their hope is rewarded with
the true stuff. Speaking of the
Blackwell Hills reminds us that it
was only a few years ago that Jack
Morris and Enoch Roten discovered
a pocket in these same hills from
which they took about $1500.
