From Klamnth Falls Express. Charles Slagie, who is lying in the Klamath county jail awaiting trial for burning Dennis Crowley's house is believed to be the man who foully assassinated Antone Joseph, in Josephine county. The Grants Pass Observer saj-s: "SSIaglo has lived, on Applegate and in the vicinity of Joseph's place about all I113 lifo. Six weeks before the mur der he went to Klamath county with the Widow Young and others who moved from Williams creek at that time. Whilo in Klamath county he was implicated in the burning of the cabin for which he is now held in default of $5000 bail. Slagie left Klamath county about the 22.1 of June, and reached Georse Mei-k's place on Saturday, the 24th of June, Before leaving Klamath he borrowed a revolver from Miss Jones. The weapon was a small, cheap 3S calibre, rim-fire, five shooter. With it he got ten cartridges. On. reaching Meck's place, he emptied his revolver firing hve snots iy tne way 01 a salute, tslagle informed his friends there that he came over on business but although, asked eeveral times, he avoided ..direct replies, and told no one whv he came. He was about the neighborhood Sunday, and Mon day he went up near the Methodist church in the upper WjUiams creek valley. Here he met tjeprge 01 ridge, and tu-ning back rode hoin-; with him, and staid all night.. Tuesday morning he came back to Meek's place, and staid till about the middle of the afternoon, lie then saddled his horse and went away going south in the general direction of Antone Joseph's place coming from that direction. lie re turned to Meek,s between sundown and dark. Afttr coming in he said he was now ready to go back to Klamath. He took his revolver out of his pocket and laid it cn the mantle. He also laid a plug of Pace's Smoking tobacco on the mantle nt the same time, a,ud re marked that Oscar Knox had given it to him in exchange for a piece of Saw Log he had borrowed. Mr. Knox never saw Slagie on this day and never gave him any tobacco ai any time. Antone Joseph ah-ays kept such tobacco on his person or in his house. Wednesday Meek and Slagie shod their horses and otherwise prepared for the return trip to Klamath. Thursday morn ing thev started, and arrived in Klamath Fails, or near there rn- Tilry-lrrsTi CliigUi drew his revol- iver and fired anonicr--wuli3fla reaching their destination, but he fired but fiur shots and said his gun was empty. A horse had been trailed in t:i woods near Joseph's place and the shoe marks are such as would hare been made by Single's horse. Sheriff Unweii has in his posses sion a 36 rim-fire revolver which lie obtained from one of the women who accompanied Slagie to this country. Mr. (io.ven has also some other evidence of a startling nature. i'he Miner Takes the Precedence. J. M. Ilagerty. who has been quite extensively over this part of Southern Oregon writes, a very in teresting letter .o the Oregonian re garding the mining outiook in Jackson and Jusephine counties. The following bit of information contained in the a'ticle is undoubt edly news to many: "Another thing that has placed a limit on prospecting, but should not. js the general belief that the grant of lands to the Oregon it California Railroad Company carries with it the righj to all minerals not discov ered at the time of the grant. This is not the case, however, and I can quote to you tbe clause in the pat ents the corporation received from the United Slates government, which makes the necessary provi sion. It reads: 'Excluding and excepting from the transfer by these Dresents all mineral lands, should anv such be found to exist iu the tracts described in the fore going; but this -exclusion and ex ception, according to the terms of the statute, shall not be c nstrued to include coal and iron lands.' -"So. vou see the patents do not pass title to mineral' lands other than coal or iron, so that these lands can be prospected in the same manner as government lands and title acquired in iike manner. I believe it is to the interest of the railpjad company as. well as the country at large that this fact should be generally known, as it will give the prospector" more courage to know that after "he has made a strike he need not be afraid of lose Ing it because it is on railroad land. The railroad company, on the other hand, is fully awake to the value of the mining interests in Southern Oregon, and is quietly influencing immigration and capital in that di rection. There is more or less talk going the rounds just at present regard ing the Nicaragua canal project. The following we find in the tele graph columns of daily papers: The announcement that the Nicaragua Canal Co.npany would soon issue $35,000,000 in " bonds, meant that the company proposed to present a bill to congress making the govem- Uocnt guarantee the issue.
