Will HavU Etcetric Lights Perhaps.
Mr. E. C. Sharpe, or Portland, Ms in
Medford this week endeavoring to ar
range for putting in ati electric light
plant in our city. This ho will do
provided the city will give him a fran
chise. He asks no bonus but expects,
of course that tho city will agree to
take a certain number of lights. Tho
mattor, so far as Mr. Sharpa is con
cerned, will bo sottled to-day, or so
soou as a conference can bo had with
Mr. Leadbetter and the city council.
Mr. Sharpe proposes to put in a plant
with a capacity of twenty-five arc and
500 incandescent lights and will have
the same in running order by tho first
of October if tho franchise is gran ted.
The cost of the plant will be near $10,
C00. The convenience and general
usefulness of those lights are known to
almost everybody and wa will wager a
guess that not a man in Medford is
there but what would bo in favor of
granting the franchise. There is prob
ably nothing which so greatly improves
a city and gives it so metropolitan an
air as do electric lights.
The Washburn Circus.
From Daily Orogonlan.
The L. W. Washburn circus inado a
fine parade through the prlucipat
streets yesterday morning and showed
to two piicked houses afternoon and
evening at Twenty-fourth and Iialoigh
streets. Ninety-five per cent of tho
matinee audience was composed of la
dies and children, and at night people
were turned away by hundreds. The
baby elephant, Cupid, seemed to bo the
chief attraction. Ho is tho first ele
phant in miuaturo ever seen ou the
Pacific coast and is a whole show in
himself, Tho performanoo is very
creditable, tho fine horses and hand
some wardrobes beiug especially no
ticeable. The acrobatic, gymnastic,

succeed each other in rapid succession.

It is a queer notion some people
' eet into their heads. The .tele
grams tell of a woman in New Jer
sey who is 101 years of age and
who is now engaged in putting an
end to her davs by starvation. If
an indulgent Providence will allow
U3 to creep up to that many years
we'll promise her she wont be in
sulted by our patting an untimely
end to our existence from lack of the
necessary sustenance.
It is altogether probable that
.'the petit burglaries which have
.. been perpetrated in Medford of late
are the work of some of the bovs of
our town. If this be the case it is
high time a full stop was registered
before they shall have arrived at a
point of more desperate outlawism
. It becomes U3 all to appoint our
selves a committee of investigation
' ere it be too late and we are mad
the butt of their thievish notions
instead of our neighbors.
The Medford basj'ball broom has
swept clean, and a broad wide. The
small hamlet to the north of us has a
reputation but it doesu't run in tho base
ball chann-'l. Last Tuesday occurred
in Modlord a rod hot game of ball be
tween Medford and Grants Pass teams
Literally speaking it could hardly be
anything else as the thermometer
climbed to tho top board of tho back
stop and the torridity that lingered
about the grounds was boiled down to
a degree quite warm, bu it was several
desrrees hotter in the Grants Pass
camp thau around where our hoaii
bovs were basking in delight at their
visitors' discomfiture.
The game was opcued at one thirty
and from the verv first it was evident
that tho visiting team wasn't to bo
counted high oa the score board while
our bovs had figured thy would wipe
up the dust with the blue pants of their
combatants and spriukle tho grounds
with their tears of remorse and mis
placed confidence. Tho M;dford boys
had seven innings and scored twenty
four counts, while the Grants Puss
team had eight inuiugs and by dex
trous efforts rolled up nine points on
the tally sheet.
The visiting club was made up of tho
following gentlemen: G. H. Irving, c:
Fred Welch, p; Fnd Mench, 1st b;
Bert Warren, 2nd b; Root. Deweree,
3rd b; Roy Barllett, r. f: Tod Wilson,
f; D. E. Dotson, 1. f; Harry Peter
son, s; Geo. Slover, scorer.
Tho Medford boys were, Fred Weeks,
c; Charlie Boardman, p; Alf. Weeks, 1st
Geo. Davis, 2nd b; John Angle, Srd
Ed. Redden, s; U. M. Damon, r. f:
A. Galloway, s. f; John Stewart, I. f:
Will Fredenburg. scorer. E. H. Faw-
cett, umpire.
The game was interesting through
out, our boys playing a good, steady
game, while the visitors 'iost their
heads'? and were badly rattled. Two
particularly good plays were made.
One bv Fred Weeks when his bat
caught the second ball given him and
seat her a long wavs outside of the
fielders, making a home run with ease
Another one was when three men were
op. bases and Damon took the bat He
sent the ball over into the tall timber,
near Jacksonville, let in three men
and slid over the home plate himself.
Grants Pass papers scorched our
team right hard, so the boys say, on
the game they played in that village
oa tho Fourth, but The Mail is not
going to pay them bacK in kind. Tho
Grants Pass boys are gentlemen, every
one of them, but they can't play ball.
Of course this is not their fault. 1 hey
have practiced enough for a league
team but they couldn't twirl the
sphere with an aptness equal to Med
ford.
It has been learned from high Rus
sian sources that tho Russian govern
ment has decided to maintain a perma-
uent fleet of warships in United States
waters, and tho port of New York will
be made Russia's Western naval con
ter. It w)ft announced Monday that
representatives of the Russian govern
ment had made overtures to the Erie
drydooks establishment to undertake
the care and overhauling of all war
ships maintained by Russia in Ameri
can waters. The opinion was ventured
in naval circles last evening that in
view of the likelihood of the Bvhring
sea cases going against Great Britain
and the late announcement that Eng

Esquimault, the proposed action of
Russia is of great importance to the
United States.

IT'S A SERIOUS BUSINESS.
From Medford to Klamath Falls.
Last Saturday's Portland Telegram
has tho following telegram, dated at
San Francisco, July 15th: W. H.
Mills, land agent for tho Central Pa
cific, will leave for Portland Suudav
night on an important trip. There he
will mset a number of London, New
York and Oregon capitalists who are
interested ia a project to build a rail
road from Medford, on the California &
Oregon road, about "0 milts eastward
to Klamath Falls, formerly known as
Linkville. Mr. Mills' business with
the party is to go with them over the
proposed line and grade timber lands
belonging to his company. The capi
talists alluded to desire to buy up the
timber land tributary to the proposed 1
road, as building the road is only a
part of a great lumber enterprise. For
about half the length of the line the
Oregon & California owns the odd
numbered sections, and this land the
promoters propose to buy.

has resigned his office. His bonds

The Boseburg Plaindealcr has this
' to say regarding the defalcation:
The investigation is not yet finished
and more disclosures are expected.
- It ii believed that there has been a
general brokerage business in coun-
. iy warrants to the detriment of the
- county, and it may take, consider
able time to ferret it out, as the law
" requiring the date when warrants
.are received for taxes to be indorsed
on tho back thereof has not been
complied with. This oversight will
. greatly retard proceedings, and may
- prevent an accurate estimate of in
terest unlawfully charged against
the county. V. A. Frater, the re
' Jmblicaji candidate for treasurer at
the last election, has been appointed
by the county court treasurer for
the remainder of the term.
Is the Law Being- Complied With?
We print below that part of the new
laws passed at the last session of the
legislature relating to county treasur
ers' payment of orders:
He (the countv treasurer) shall pay
ail orders of the county clerk when
presented, if there be money in the
treasury for that purpose, and write on
the fae! of fruch order the date of re
demption and his signature. If there
be no funds to pay such order when
presented, he shall endorse thereon
-not paid for want of funds," and the
date of such presentment, over his sig
nature, which shall entitle such order
thenceforth to draw legal interest;
provided, that such interest shall cease
t i-om the date of notice by publication
in some newspaper printed or circula
ted in his county, to be given by the
county treasurer, that there are funds
to redeem such outstanding orders,
which notice such treasurer shall give
when he has as much as ono thousand
five hundred dollars belonging to th
county fund. Any county treasurer
failiiij? to comnlv with the require
ment of this section for the period of
ten dava. shall unon conviction thereof,
