Talent Talk.
- Talent school closed frthe term,
having had six months, under the

Old Mr. Beeson hns been laid tip

tion of complaints, the effect of la

The young folks of Talent at

I guess Mnnafraid'jfttbear will give
you a report.
Our constable, J. li. Carlisle, is
suffering from a severe cold, con
tracted while sinking a one hundred
foot shaft on the divide, between
Wagner creek and Ashland.
A meeting will be called soon to
try to raise means to bail J a new
school building. The one now in'
use is not fit to confine criminals in,
much less innocent pupils and
teachers.
James V. Briner is spending a
few days with ust buying a supply
of provisions to take to hi rich pla
cer mines on Beaver creek, where
he expects to dig out a small for
tune this summer.
. Wm. Abbott has been running
his saw mill nearly all "winter and
has a supply of lumber on baud,
waiting for the roads to dry up so
as to be able to deliver, to fill the
numerous orders.
If we are not much mistaken

Mrs. R. C, G.xldard passed over '
to the unknown shore after a hwig'
and painful iiluess.at her daughter's ;
home, Mrs. Ersula Dean, on Satur-i
day morning, March IS. ' A large i
procession of her friends and neigh- i
i,r9 followed her remains to the j
Talent cemetery, where, with ap- j
i-onriate ceremony she was laid!
away to the long rest, after so long
a journey on earth, she having
passed her sixty -sixth birth day.
5?he was a dutiful wife, affectionate
mother, and true friend. Sic transit

At about 2 o'clock pi m.,
the house of James Purvis, lieing
the fine residence built by David
K. Stearns during his life, caught
fire from a defective flue, and in
one hour was entirely consumed.
The neighbors immediately gath
ered from far and near, but a strong
wind blowing, they were unable to
save the residence, but prevented
the out buildings from catching
fire and also secured the most of
the household goods. Their loss
is about 11,500" and comes very
heavy on Mr. Purvis at this time.
Several of the citizens are build
ing new board fences .around their
fine farms and are moving the time
worn, old fashioned, Virginia rail
fence9 to the back ground. A few
years ngo tho principle occupation
of this neighborhood was the mak
ing and hauling of rails, and Tails
passed" as legal tender to pay tor
produce and groceries, but with the
introduction of more modem im
provements no more rails are' used.
It is hard tor an old timer to get
used to the new order of things, and
every day brings something new in
this rushing, progressive age.
I have been reading the predic
tions of John McGvern and Ait-
drew II. Green, in regard to the fu
ture of the great citis of America
one hundred years hence, .and it
occurred to me it would bo. a fine
idea for The Mail to solicit essays
from the students of the various
schools, teachers or any one else,
to give their opinion in regard to
tho development of our beautiful
valley during the next ten- years.
Not of any one particular spot, but
tho whole of this cove, surrounded
as it is by the rim of everlasting
mountains. If one part is i ta proved
the whole valley will feel the im
pulse. It is evident some great
chango must take place in our
financial and business affairs, or
there will not be employment for
the rising generation that are now
attending our numerous schools.
A great deal of excitement, which
caused a lar;e crowd to gather, hap
pened today. Some time ago Ben
Dyer discovered a very rich ledge
of gold quartz where the railroad
had cut through the point of a bill
near here, but the R. It. Co. would
not allow him to work the mine on
their right of way, until lie should
prospect the ledge further away,
and then if it proved rich, they
were to gjve him the privilege tu
open to the right of way. He sunk
a shaft fifty or sixty feet away, first
having bonded the land from the
owner, G. F. Billinjrs. On last
Friday he came to his home, hav
ing left his tools and windlass at
the mine. Today when he and his
men went back," they f.und some
parties from Ashland working the
mine, claiming to hold a bond for
a deed from G. F. Billings for t'ha
land, and also asserting that they
had taken out seven hundred dol
lars since last Saturday. It made
Mr. Iver pretty hostile and it is
bard to 6ay how it v ill terminate.
It throws a rather wrong appear

or else on our esteeyved Sunday

The next time that ManafraKIof

the one thai appeared ii last week's
Mail about our worthy neighbor
Jerry True, we promise him that he
may well be afraid of a bear, for
when Jerry gets "riled1 he is a bear,
and a grizzly at that. Let us ex
plain a littie: The Pboenixite came
to Mr. True's and wanted four sacks
of wheat. A trade was made by
which he paid for two sacks and
Mr. True thinking of course that Ik
wanted the amount talked of in the
start, proceeded to fill up four sacks.
Imagine Mr. True's surprise when
the Phoenix man drove off without
saying a word. No doubt Mana
fraidofabear is a relative of Geo.
Washington and his little hatchet,
but this climate has a bad effect on
such people, we are told.
