Heavy speculators in wheat the world over have lost money this season in a vain attempt to hold prices up and they are now very apt to press the market too far in the other direction. Prices hav now reached a very moderate level. They are not low, but they are by no means high. Any further de cline is likely to be . followed by a sharp reaction. It is probable that the liquidation is not yet ended. The weakness of Eastern markets indicate probable further declines, as the liquidation of foreign wheat seems to have just set in. Of rooms to rent and empty houses there arc none in Medford. Strangers are constantly coming in with an eye to locating aruongus. Medford being among the favored six places set to hold a Farmers' Insti tute the session opened Friday evening in the Opera house, with a large attend ance from Ashland, Grants Pass, Jack sonville and all parts of the county. Professors Washburn, Coots, French and Shaw, from tho state agricultural college, were present and many leading men of Southern Oregon. Fruit men took especial interest. Tho open ing address was made, by Hon. J. D. Whitman and the reply by Professor Shaw. An address on "Farm Life" was read by Mrs. Susie West and one on the "Advantages of Industrial Edu cation to Fanners," by N. L. Narregan. An exhibition of work by the Ueleral Cream Separator was very interesting and successful. Music was furnished by Prof. N. L. Narregan and the Gor.i brothers and the excellence of tho numbers were enthusiastically appr c in ted by everyone. Saturday's sessions, day Kiid evening, were greeted by even larger audiences than the evening before, all the promi nent agriculturists and horticulturists of this part of tho state being present and takiug part in the dismissions. "Almond-growing in Southern Oregon-' was comprehensively stated by Hon. A. H. Carson, of Joseph -tie county. "Ben eficial Insects," by Professor E. L. Washburn, was another well considered subject. His chart illustrations gave an excellent idea of the propagation and growth of fruit peats, and he dis cussed at length the must approved methods of siiraving, which called out opinions from the most experienced and successful orchard ists of this sec tion. At the closing session. Saturday evening, Hon. H. B. Miller, of Grants Pass delivered an able and lengthy ad- j dress on "Agricultural Education." j Mrs. R. A.
