Comments: Monday’s regular cattle sale
featured near 200 head of cattle, with a good
run of cows and some nice calves and year-
lings, though not enough cattle for a true
market test. Good high-yielding cows were
steady to slightly lower this week, topping
out at $1.04 per pound, with an average
price of 98 cents per pound. Thin, lower
yielding cows under 1300 pounds were a bit
lower, bringing up to $1.00 per pound, with
an average of 89 cents. Slaughter bulls were
steady, with a top of $1.20, and an average
of $1.15 cents per pound. Feeder cattle
were steady on a light run, with good light
steers weighing 500-600 pounds bringing
up to $1.87 and averaging in the mid $1.60s.
Heifers sold well also, with a highlight being
800-900 weights bringing up to $1.43.

Fluid Milk and Cream — Western U.S.
Aug. 18
High temperatures are contributing to
reduced cow comfort and milk output in
California. Despite a decline in production,
milk volumes are available for processors in
the state to run busy schedules. Contacts
report they continue to move loads of
milk to other parts of the region where
supplies are tighter. Class I milk sales are
steady to higher as educational institutions
are returning from their summer breaks.
Demands for Class II and III are steady.
Milk production continues to decline
in Arizona, following seasonal trends.
Some producers in the state say recent
rain and flooding have limited their
ability to transport some volumes of milk
to processing facilities. Plant managers at
some drying operations in the state say this
has contributed to unplanned down time.
Some processors in Arizona are receiving
milk from other parts of the region to meet
current production demands. Demand for
milk is steady across all Classes.
In New Mexico, farm level milk production
is steady to lower. Stakeholders say milk
volumes are limited in the state. Some
plant managers say they continue to source
loads of milk from other states. Educational
facilities are resuming classes for their fall
semester and are increasing their purchas-
ing of Class I milk. Sales of Class II and Class
III are steady.
Milk production is declining in the Pacific
Northwest, as hot temperatures persist in
the area. Contacts report milk is available
for processing. Some plant managers in
the area say labor shortages and high
temperatures are causing them to run
reduced production schedules. Volumes of
milk remain available, and some are being
sold at a discount. Demand is steady across
all Classes.
In the mountain states of Idaho, Utah, and
Colorado, contacts report declining milk
production amid seasonally high tempera-
tures. Despite this decline, milk remains
available for processing. Some plant manag-
ers say they are moving loads at a discount
due to labor shortages and limited tanker
availability. Purchasers from other states in
the region are buying loads of milk from the
mountain states to meet local production
demands. Class I demand is steady to high-
er, due to increased educational purchasing.
Demands for Class II and Class III are steady.
Contract purchasers of condensed skim
continue to pull at the higher ends of their
availability. Contacts report strong demand
from ice cream makers. Condensed skim
supplies are tightening in the region. Cream
availability is tightening.
Stakeholders say cream production is
declining and demand is strong. Ice cream
makers continue to purchase loads of cream
to maintain steady production.
Some regional butter makers say they are
selling loads of cream, due to high cream
multiples and labor shortages.
Strong demand is present for cream.

Compared to last week, steers and heifers
sold 1.00 to 5.00 higher. Demand was good
to very good again this week nationwide.
As the cash fed cattle market continues
to strengthen, so does the feeder cattle
market. Cattle feeders want to get pur-
chase yearlings while they are available,
whether they are off grass or out of grow-
ing yards, which is resulting in a market
that is extremely active.
The negotiated cash fed cattle market
in the north is retaining the positive basis
over the board, 7.00 this week, which is
really helping to fuel the fire that is lit
under the feeder cattle market, as this
has been a counter seasonal rally. This is
the time of year where fed cattle supplies
are traditionally the greatest and where
the market usually gets very sluggish. The
fact that this has not happened this year
as caused cattle producers to really get
bullish on the future.
The Aug. 1 Cattle on Feed report was re-
leased on Friday afternoon with the report
being slightly bearish as placements were
larger than expected. Cattle on feed was
reported at 101 percent, placements at 102
percent and marketings at 96 percent.
Negotiated cash fed cattle trade in the
Nebraska sold 0.50 to 2.00 higher at 146.00
to 148.50, while the dressed sales sold 4.00
to 5.00 higher from 234.00.
Live sales in the Southern Plains were
reported 1.00 to 2.00 higher at 141.00 to
142.00.

higher at 264.28, while Select was 1.65
lower at 237.94 for the same period.
Weekly Cattle Slaughter under federal
inspection estimated at 661K for the week,
14K more than last week and 5K less than
a year ago. Auction volume this week
included 49 percent weighing over 600 lbs
and 42 percent heifers.
