Comments: Really good cow market this
week. In our 35 years of owning a livestock
market you can count on one hand the times
the cow market has been stronger in August
than it was in June, and you might say this
is a fi rst. The big cow numbers might not be
there. USDA reports reduced cow kill across
the nation. A few feeder cattle are starting
to show up and the interest is picking up
among the buyers.

Fluid Milk and Cream — Western U.S.
Aug. 11
Milk output varies throughout the state of
California. Some contacts report high tem-
peratures and dry weather are contributing to
reduced production in some areas.
Meanwhile, others say milk production is
strong and remains unchanged week to week.
Processors in the state say milk is available for
them to run busy schedules. Some plant man-
agers are selling loads of milk to other parts of
the region where supplies are tighter.
Educational institutions in the state are
increasing their purchasing of Class I milk as
they prepare for fall classes. Steady demand is
present for Class II and III.
High temperatures in Arizona are contribut-
ing to seasonally declining milk production.
Extreme rain and fl ooding are reducing the
ability of some producers to move volumes
of milk from farms to processing facilities.
This has caused some downtime at drying
operations that were unable to obtain
suffi cient milk volumes. Milk supplies are tight
in the state, and some processors continue to
source loads of milk from parts of the region.
Demand is steady across all Classes.
Farm level milk production is declining,
following seasonal trends in New Mexico.
Contacts report overall output remains
down compared to last year. Milk availability
is limited and causing some processors
to move loads from other states to meet
current production demands. Class I sales are
trending higher, due to increased educational
purchasing.
Meanwhile, Class II and III demands are
unchanged. In the Pacifi c Northwest, high
temperatures continue to contribute to
declining milk production. Stakeholders say
milk remains available for processing, despite
seasonally declining output. Contact reports
labor shortages and transportation issues are
causing them to sell some loads of milk at a
discount. Demand is steady to higher for Class
I. Class II and III demands are unchanged.
Seasonally high temperatures are contrib-
uting to declining milk production in the
mountain states of Idaho, Utah, and Colorado.
Milk is available for processing in the area.
Spot loads of milk are being traded from $3
to $6 under Class IV. Plant managers say loads
of milk continue to move at a discount due to
labor shortages. Across all Classes, demand
is unchanged. Condensed skim demand is
strong, as contract purchasers are pulling at
the higher ends of their availability. Some
spot purchasers are searching for additional
loads of condensed skim, as inventories are
tightening in the region.
Cream production is declining, and invento-
ries are tightening, in the West. Some butter
makers say high cream multiples and labor
shortages are causing them to sell additional
loads of cream. Cream demand is strong.
Western cream multiples are unchanged
this week.

Compared to last week, steers and heifers
sold steady to 4.00 higher in the North and
South Central regions, while the Southeast
region sold steers and heifers 4.00 to 7.00
higher. Demand ranged from good to very
good this week as cattle feeders are feeling
very optimistic about the coming months in
the fed cattle market.
Grass yearlings are in a lighter supply
this year in the North Central region due to
last year’s drought, which prevented cattle
producers from overwintering cattle the way
they normally would. Buyers are competing
heavily to get these cattle bought while they
are available. The market is extremely active
for these feeder cattle as the cash fat market
is so much better than what was expected for
this summer.
Fed cattle this week continues to hold a
positive basis over the board in the North
which is only adding to the positive vibes that
cattle feeders are feeling. The supply of fat
cattle in the north is generally the heaviest
during the summer months and with the cash
market outperforming the futures market so
greatly cattle feeders are really going all out
for the winter months, where supplies are
typically lighter.
Feed costs continue to be high, and effi cien-
cy is key during times like this, which adds fuel
to the fi re that is lit under the yearling market.
Cattle feeders want these grass cattle that
are in that light fl esh condition to get that
quick compensatory gain.
In the South Central region, oppressive heat
early week kept some cattle from making it to
town and recent rains over some of the driest
areas have provided some hope to those that
haven’t already sold calves earlier than usual,
however, slim hope it is.
Overall, this week’s off ering was typical of
a late summer run; in the 140K to 160K range
for auction cattle receipts. Calves are showing
up in more and more sales as cattle producers
in drier areas are taking bawling calves to
market, hoping to save the fl esh condition on
their cow herd moving forward. New owners
of those bawling calves seem to be getting
along as they are hungry and eager to get to
the feed bunk.
Negotiated cash fed cattle trade in the
Nebraska sold 4.00 to 5.00 higher at 144.00
to 148.00, while the dressed sales sold 2.00 to
3.00 higher from 229.00-230.00.
Live sales in the Southern Plains were re-
ported 4.00 to 5.00 higher at 140.00.00. Choice
boxed beef closed the week 1.25 lower at
263.37, while Select was 0.92 higher at 239.59
for the same period.
Weekly Cattle Slaughter under federal
inspection estimated at 647K for the week, 4K
less than last week and 11K more than a year
ago. Auction volume this week included 51
percent weighing over 600 lbs and 41 percent
heifers.
