Comments: Really good cow market this
week. In our 35 years of owning a livestock
market you can count on one hand the times
the cow market has been stronger in August
than it was in June, and you might say this
is a first. The big cow numbers might not be
there. USDA reports reduced cow kill across
the nation. A few feeder cattle are starting
to show up and the interest is picking up
among the buyers.

Fluid Milk and Cream — Western U.S.
Aug. 4
Milk output is mixed in California.
Some contacts report that milk produc-
tion has improved this week, and overall
output was up in July compared to a year
ago. Others are reporting that higher
temperatures and dry weather have con-
tributed to reduced milk production.
Milk is available for processing in the
state, and some plant managers say they
continue to send loads to other parts of
the region. Contacts report increased
sales of Class I. Demand for Class II and
III are unchanged.
Farm level milk production is steady
to lower in Arizona. Contacts report
reduced cow comfort due to high tem-
peratures in the state. Due to tight in-
state milk supplies, some plant managers
are purchasing loads of milk from other
parts of the region to meet their current
production needs. Demand for Class I is
steady to higher, and unchanged for all
other Classes.
In New Mexico, milk production is
declining, and some contacts say output
is down compared to this time last year.
Processors in the state report they are
purchasing loads from nearby states
where inventories are more available.
Class II and III demands are steady, while
Class I sales continue to trend higher.
High temperatures in the Pacific
Northwest are contributing to reduced
cow comfort and declining milk output.
Despite this, milk is available for pro-
cessing. Loads of milk are, reportedly,
being sold to other parts of the region
where supplies are less available. Some
educational institutions are increasing
their purchasing of Class I milk as they
prepare for the fall semester.
Demands for Class II and III are also
trending higher. Milk output is declining
in the mountain states of Idaho, Utah,
and Colorado. Stakeholders say that milk
remains available in the area, and that
spot loads are being traded from $3 to
$6 under Class IV. Some loads of milk
are, reportedly, being sold due to labor
shortages that are preventing processing
facilities from running full schedules.
Class I demand is steady to higher, while
Class II and III demands are unchanged.
Contract purchasers of condensed skim
continue to pull heavily on supplies in
the West. Some contacts report that they
continue to sell spot loads of condensed
skim, but that availability is tightening.
Demand for cream is strong throughout
the region, as ice cream and butter mak-
ers are running active schedules.
Stakeholders say cream inventories are
tightening in the region.

Compared to last week, calf and yearling
market is extremely active as most sales
this past week traded firm to 5.00 higher
some instances 6.00-8.00 higher. There
were many long strings of yearlings sold
with very good demand as buyers are still
eager to chase the market higher.
There were several large sales this past
week as Winter Livestock in Dodge City
continued with their 2nd of two special An-
niversary Sales on Wednesday selling near
5900 head with many highlights including
620 head of fancy 600-650 lb heifers
averaging 615 lbs selling for a weighted
average price of 186.17 with Salina and
Pratt on Thursday both having impressive
sales as well.
Herreid Livestock in Herreid, SD, on
Friday sold 861 head of 850-900 lb steers
averaging 881 lbs sold for a weighted
average price of 189.04. In Valentine, NE

steers averaging 828 lbs for a weighted
price of 198.05 and 252 head of steers

for a weighted average price of 210.04.
Superior Livestock held their Video Royale
in Winnemucca, NV, this past week selling
a little over 200,000 head on offer with
many highlights too numerous to mention
as price levels grow even loftier as buyers
don’t have to take delivery until later in
the year.
Their Preliminary Report was released on
Wednesday with many Value-Added cattle
on offer all selling with very good demand,
with many of the 6 weight steers for Octo-
ber delivery mostly averaging well over the
2.00/per lb mark with many 9 weight steers
over the 180.00/per lb level.
Buyers flexed their muscle in pursuing
all classes of feeder cattle this past week
despite high feed cost. Despite the
exceptional drought encompassing many
areas of the Southwest and major cattle
producing states backgrounders and cattle
feeders are banking that cattle will be
good property to own in the next calendar
year.
Negotiated cash fed cattle in the
Southern Plains was mostly 135.00-136.00
with the bulk at 136.00, Northern Plains
ranged from 140.00-143.00 with a few up

year. Auction volume this week included 56
